To ask you about Gin or tipples you've discovered?

I was given some Edinburgh Rhubarb and Ginger gin for Christmas - I bloody love it with some fiery ginger beer!

Is gin really fashionable at the moment? I've heard people talk of 'bathtub' gin and others which I can't remember!

Just wondered if it's a fashion thing as when I was young it was just Gordon's gin or Bombay Sapphire if you had a bit more money!

Have you recently discovered a tipple you like?

I used to hate gin but after a trip to a Xmas fair discover the most amazing parma violet gin. It's by Boozey Belles and it's lovely over ice or with lemonade.

DanielleEvans · 30/12/2018 18:58

OMG I love parma violets! I might have to check that out

I've always liked Gin. I used to drink it all the time it was out of fashion, along with dark rum.
Both are in fashion now but all those bloody flavoured gins women are raving about, especially on Facebook, are absolute shite.
I tried that rhubarb and ginger gin liqueur with ginger ale last week....Yuk!

Gin and lime....or tonic,...or with red vermouth, brilliant!

Confusedbeetle · 30/12/2018 19:13

rhubarb and ginger , love it neat

LokiBear · 30/12/2018 19:24

Ive also discovered gin. Drinking pink gin and grape schloer as I type. Makes a nice change from red wine :)

ElfridaEtAl · 30/12/2018 19:25

I've recently become partial to violet gin. I love Parma Violets. Gordon's pink gin is lovely as well. I like them with lemonade.

Here4theaibu · 30/12/2018 22:01

There's a company called That Boutiquey Gin Company and they do a spit roasted pineapple gin which is honestly one of the most amazing things I've tasted! Goes great with ginger beer, Lilt or grapefruit Ting!

DrFoxtrot · 30/12/2018 22:07

I discovered gin in 1998 and like my gin to taste like gin without all the flavoured/ pink shite. I was quite late to discover chambord about 3 years ago.

cucumbergin · 30/12/2018 22:08

Gin is massively fashionable right now - there seem to be dozens of tiny distilleries popping up to make gin.

Can I recommend the Ginventory app? Someone here recommended it on another gin thread and it's great for suggesting good mixers/garnishes for different gins, which I find really difficult to work out otherwise.

DangerousBeanz · 30/12/2018 22:10

I've got the rhubarb and ginger gin, and a gingerbread gin and an orange marmalade gin. V nice.

Glad I'm not the only one! 😊

SpoonBlender · 30/12/2018 22:14

Fave gin at the moment is Ginza, it's Japan flavoured. Not Japanese at all, but lovely and full of flavours.

Mostly at the moment I'm drinking baileys or white rum diaquiris, using either Botran white or (if I'm feeling brave) Wray and Nephew overproof. So many limes have met their doom this Christmas :D

dontcallmelen · 30/12/2018 22:14

I have been drinking Gin for years, it was deeply unfashionable for many years but it’s the only spirit I like, yy the fecking flavours bloody horrible, but I have succumbed to fever tree tonic water.

snowball98 · 30/12/2018 22:15

I like a glass of pocecco with a small nip of the Edinburgh gin elderflower liqueur.

clpsmum · 30/12/2018 22:16

I love gin, sloe gin my favourite. I'm not a whisky drinker at all smell alone puts me off but I've just discovered bruadar whisky liqueur flavoured with honey and skies and it's the nicest think over ever drank tbh

MazDazzle · 30/12/2018 22:17

Same here Limensoda.

A lot of the flavoured gins are liqueurs, so are very syrupy and have a fairly low alcohol content compared to gin. If you like this sort of thing, Edinburgh Gin do a fair fee flavours. They are great neat, or as a flavouring to prosecco/cava or in a longer drink with ice & a fancy cordial. Belvoir do a lovely lime and lemongrass cordial.

Brockman’s is a proper strength gin made with fruit, but it’s too sweet for me. I prefer a more citrusy gin. Hendricks with cucumber is still my favourite though! It has been for years.

MazDazzle · 30/12/2018 22:21

This Christmas we bought cocktail making paraphernalia and have so far made espresso martinis, porn stars, cosmopolitans, hogos and mojitos. To tell you the truth I’m getting sick of them and craving regular G & T!

Almondio · 30/12/2018 22:21

Tarquin's strawberry and lime gin is gorgeous, not at all sweet like some of the flavoured fruity gins. It's my new favourite.

notacooldad · 30/12/2018 22:25

It's been uber fashionable for a while now? Which planet have you returned from!

Ever guest we had over Christmas brought a bottle of gin! We now have Rhubarb and ginger, Parma Violet, plum and vanilla, rose and pomegranate , gingerbread and many others!

GoodSouls · 30/12/2018 22:26

I have discovered gin a few years ago after always having been put off it by my Dads Gordon's gin with Schweppes tonic straight of the drinks cupboard....no ice, no lemon...yuck! Anyway love it all now, especially Bloom with a strawberry and mint in summer.

My newish discovery is Frangelico....neat over ice is just amazing and the perfect drink at Christmas.Smile

Userplusnumbers · 30/12/2018 22:27

Waitrose hidden orange gin is lovely - had a bottle for Christmas!

MrsSchadenfreude · 30/12/2018 22:28

I make my own spiced gin to have with tonic for something a bit different. No sickly sugary syrupy stuff, just the addition of lemon zest and spices. I also make my own tonic water.

Diamondangel8 · 30/12/2018 22:28

Edinburgh rhubarb and ginger gin is my favourite too

MazDazzle · 30/12/2018 22:29

Thanks for that app tip Cucumber. I usually just read the back of the label and match the garnish based on which botanicals it’s make with. The bottle usually says if it’s citrus, berries or something savoury such as cucumber, thyme or rosemary.

Drinking a regular Edinburgh gin & tonic with orange peel tonight and it’s lovely.

Furrycushion · 30/12/2018 22:29

I hate all the flavoured gins, particularly the liqueur ones. But a decent G&T with loads of ice, grapefruit peel or lime & fevertree tonic. Yum. And I love the Clementine & cinnamon tonic, its very subtle.
