To ask you about Gin or tipples you've discovered?

I was given some Edinburgh Rhubarb and Ginger gin for Christmas - I bloody love it with some fiery ginger beer!

Is gin really fashionable at the moment? I've heard people talk of 'bathtub' gin and others which I can't remember!

Just wondered if it's a fashion thing as when I was young it was just Gordon's gin or Bombay Sapphire if you had a bit more money!

Have you recently discovered a tipple you like?

Whitley Neil have some lovely guns with a subtle flavour and they’re not liqueurs. The quince one is really popular.

Userplusnumbers · 30/12/2018 22:31

I hate all the flavoured gins

But this is literally the point of gin - the botanicals that flavour it?! All gin is 'flavoured'

BestIsWest · 30/12/2018 22:32

I am strictly a Gordon’s and Schweppes slimline tonic drinker - it’s what I’ve drunk since I was about 20. I don’t do sweet pink gin drinks at all.
The closest I get to faffing is a few drops of Angostura bitters.

However, DD had a bottle of Edinburgh Rhubarb and Ginger and it was ok. I’ll go that far.

Furrycushion · 30/12/2018 22:33

When I say flavoured gins, I really mean the sweetened ones.

Birdshitbridgegotme · 30/12/2018 22:37

I got some Parma violet gin for Xmas. It's so nice u need to try it £12 in tesco

U2HasTheEdge · 30/12/2018 22:38

I have got a lovely bottle of pink and violet gin sitting here. The medication I'm on is tough on my liver so I am having to limit alcohol use very strictly for the next six months.

I also love Rhubarb gin and had a lovely Blood Orange gin in the pub recently. When I can drink again I want to get the Turkish delight and Bakewell. I also like the Unicorn gin, I think it is meant to taste of marshmallows.

flumposie · 30/12/2018 22:39

currently enjoying Edinburgh rhubarb and ginger gin also. Cheers Smile

MaluCachu · 30/12/2018 22:40

Aber Falls orange marmalade gin 😋

JaceLancs · 30/12/2018 22:56

I like gin but not if too flavoured
Ophir or some of the botanical varieties
DS bought me an amazing botanical gin from M & S in Glasgow for my birthday was about £40 but sadly not found it anywhere since
It’s not a drink discovery but I do make the perfect margarita and now quite like tequila on its own

HairyDogsFeet · 30/12/2018 23:04

Most of the flavoured kinds like Edinburgh rhubarb and Parma violet are not really gin. They are less than 20% proof and so more of a liqueur.

If you want a real gin get Isle of Harris.

Most real gin drinkers can’t do with this artisan blended crap (loads of producers don’t distill they just infuse cheap gin).

Lomondstripe · 30/12/2018 23:07

But this is literally the point of gin - the botanicals that flavour it?! All gin is 'flavoured'

Real gin, no matter what else is involved, must taste predominantly of juniper, otherwise it must be known as ‘distilled gin’ - at that point you can use an alcohol base and add any old shite which is where all these Bakewell tart gingerbread Parma violet drinks come in.

Isle of Harris is 👌🏻

violeticecream · 30/12/2018 23:09

The botanist gin is amazing

userschmoozer · 30/12/2018 23:12

ikltownofboothlehem · 30/12/2018 23:14

Ophir
Aldi Needle gin
Brockmans
Daffys
Six O Clock gin

And my homemade lemon sherbet gin Smile

HairyDogsFeet · 30/12/2018 23:19

We cleared out our gin a couple of months ago. We had about 40 bottles that we had been given but most of it gave no pleasure to drink.

Kept Harris, gin mare, Ophir, Whitley, Hendricks, bathtub, bottle of Bombay sapphire for cocktails

Dumped all the marmalade, Parma violet, whisky, lavender, Lemon, cranberry, rhubarb tasting stuff. Got rid of about 30 bottles, 14 of which were unopened

Gin drinking has become a pleasure again.

margotsdevil · 30/12/2018 23:50

I enjoy Pickerings :-) both the plain and spiced varieties! Also love Darnley's View Spiced, preferably with ginger ale.

Also Ungava (Canadian), Kirkjuvagr (from Orkney) and Boe are all worth a try if you're after a nice traditional flavour.

DumbledoresApprentice · 31/12/2018 00:04

I got a Parma violet gin liqueur for Christmas and used it to make French 75s. It worked really well. I just reduced the amount of sugar syrup to account for the sugar in the liqueur.
For a gin and tonic I prefer a typical junipery gin.
I also got a bottle of angostura butters. This resulted in me making Old Fashioneds which are my new favourite tipple.

Gth1234 · 31/12/2018 00:58

not Gin, but 43 (a spanish liqueur) is fantastic.

Celticrose · 31/12/2018 02:39

Dh and I once made our own sloe gin. Very nice plus we had gotten the gin in the duty free Can$30 for 2 1l bottles

IndigoApple · 31/12/2018 18:48

DH got me a bottle of Slingsby gin for Christmas because I saw a picture of it in a magazine and liked the bottle! It tastes good too. Having it just now with cucumber and watermelon tonic and lime peel (not very elegantly peeled!).

John Lewis sells a 4-pack of Double Dutch different flavoured tonics (not sure if only at Christmas?). Shame I never have the car with me when I'm at JL or I'd stock up.

HairyDogsFeet · 31/12/2018 18:55

Slings by is good, harewood food and drink project is another good Harrogate gin. My dh likes Whittaker’s but I am not as keen.

blibblibs · 31/12/2018 18:55

Gin is ridiculously fashionable at the moment which means when I go out I get it served to me in a bloody fishbowl and pay through the nose for it!
Tanquery No 10 or Hendricks with a decent tonic, tesco finest is nice, will do just fine.

Girlicorne · 31/12/2018 19:09

I just discovered rhubarb and ginger gin with ginger ale a few weeks ago it's awesome and the palma violet and unicorn ones at wetherspoons! Currently drinking Gordons pink gin and lemonade. It's lush! I don't like tonic.
