To keep out-of-date Baileys?

I've been given a bottle of Baileys for Christmas. I've just been putting it away and realised there's an unopened bottle there that I'd forgotten about, either from last year or the year before. I've checked the bb date (didn't actually know they had them until watching Death on the Tyne the other night! Blush) and it's October 2018.

WIBU to keep it and open/drink it over the next few weeks or is that a definite no-no and it should be poured straight down the sink?

Has anyone ever drunk Baileys or similar past the bb date? Were you OK or ill afterwards? Well, more ill than usual anyway! Wink

If it is "best before" and not "use by", and it hasn't been opened it will be fine. I wouldn't keep it on the go for too long though.

Have a look/sniff. I might be more inclined to make a cheesecake with it rather than drink...

DanielRicciardosSmile · 30/12/2018 16:29

@LoniceraJaponica, I've just checked again and it's definitely best before end date so atm only about 8 weeks out of date. It has been kept as they recommend too which leads me to suspect it might be OK?

@freeAnneBoleyn good call on the sniff, I'm assuming it'd be obvious if it was off, like milk. Also excellent suggestion about the cheesecake. DH makes divine Baileys and mint Aero chessecake - might have to drop a few hints!

It will be fine
Enjoy

@Munchyseeds thankyou and cheers!

It’ll be fine if it’s only a few weeks past the best before.

I have tasted Bailey’s that was well past the date though, and it was very clear that it was off.

Just have a taste, and if it’s fine- crack on.

The only time I've known an issue with out of date baileys is when the consumer was also drinking other drinks. We think the Baileys curdled internally. So as long as you stick to the Baileys and nothing else I wouldn't waste it.

fakeplasticbush · 30/12/2018 16:40

I once found Baileys at my inlaws that was off and it was very, very obvious. A few weeks past the bb date and smelling fine? I'd be having a pint of it over ice right now if I were you Wink Tesco subbed my Baileys today with some random coffee liqueur so I am very jealous.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 30/12/2018 16:49

Thankyou all for your advice. I think I'm going to open it tonight and see what it's like when poured.

I'll raise a glass to you all! Xmas Smile

My parents offered me a baileys recently..... Whatever was left on the bottle... I guess 1/3 left.... Had turned completely solid 😲 god knows how old it was 😱

CoughLaughFart · 30/12/2018 17:07

I’ve had Baileys that was over a year out of date and have lived to tell the tale.

Hoddykins · 30/12/2018 17:10

You could make some Bailey's fudge if you want it used up quicker than you can drink it!

There's recipes on google.

TENDTOprocrastinate · 30/12/2018 17:17

How long does Baileys last after you’ve opened it and should it be kept in the fridge?

I’ve got an opened bottle from last xmas sitting in the cupboard and was wondering if I could drink it!

beepbeeprichie · 30/12/2018 17:19

We cracked open a bottle of chocolate Baileys during Death on the Tyne the other night! It was best before January 2018 and it was absolutely fine! Will be trying to polish it off sooner rather than later mind you Grin

colorao · 30/12/2018 17:21

I've drank half a bottle of Baileys from the cupboard this Christmas period. DH pointed out it was best before Nov 2017. Tasted fine and I survived.

ginghamstarfish · 30/12/2018 17:22

It's fine, keep it in the fridge after opening.

userofthiswebsite · 30/12/2018 17:22

We had Baileys the other week that was opened and had been in the fridge c2 years. I was fine. So were they.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 30/12/2018 17:23

You've all convinced me, it's definitely getting opened tonight!

Had a wee giggle about the solid Baileys though!

What I'd like to know is how people misplace Bailey's. It calls to me from the cupboard/fridge.

colorao · 30/12/2018 17:28

I'm more surprised now that I've not been ill from drinking my already opened cupboard Baileys. Genuinely never kept it in the fridge, oooops.

lisasimpsonssaxophone · 30/12/2018 17:31

If it’s very very old it will look like cottage cheese! Saw some once at a family friend’s house and it was not pleasant. That was the remains of an open bottle that had been forgotten about for literally years. A few weeks out of date and still smelling/tasting normal will be absolutely fine.

pinkhorse · 30/12/2018 17:38

We opened one with a July 18 date on it recently and it was all funny and lumpy in the bottom...urghhhh

selepele · 30/12/2018 17:39

I would keep it

FrazzyAndFrumpled · 30/12/2018 17:42

Several years ago, I drank some cheapo Baileys that had been open in my dad’s fridge for an unspecified time... it looked fine, but tasted slightly odd... I didn’t really think about the fact it was cream so still drank a a glass or two. I was so ill Sad

mywigwamneedsnewflaps · 30/12/2018 18:11

I found a bottle in the cupboard a few moths back that was about 6 months past best before date , it didn't taste quite right and I binned it
