Picnics on the dog beach...

Queenofthedrivensnow · 30/12/2018 16:15

So there are two beaches side by side. One has a dog ban. The other one doesn't. The no dog beach is nicer and bigger as it should be. Right now both have free parking and are both easily accessible down ramps. They are very similar.

I let my dog off the lead as it's far from the road and he's fine with other dogs. It's usually a fab walk.

Today there's a family with toddlers down there, and a tent. And a barbecue and fecking glasses of wine. On the dog beach. So ddog stayed on the lead because the bbq is on the floor and I'm not risking the potential consequence!!!

If I was on my own I might have made my feelings clear but I had the dds with me I didn't.

I wouldn't walk him down there in summer.

Aibu to think this is a bit out of order? Happy to be told aibu

I think you have given it way too much thought Luvey, maybe you need to calm down a bit.

LittleAlbatross · 30/12/2018 17:08

It's not a dog beach. That's like saying I shouldn't be allowed to have a picnic in the Lake District because dogs are allowed all over here.

If your dog has poor recall it should be on a lead regardless. As a non dog owner I'm fed up of dogs ruining our picnics here in the lakes by dogs that are apparently "just being friendly" Angry

recklessruby · 30/12/2018 17:09

Are there signs up? Aberdeen beach has clear signs along the prom telling you where dogs are/are not allowed.
To be honest if I was the family with food I would choose the non dog bit but people are allowed to sit where they want.
They didn't make a fuss about dogs being around so maybe it's not a big deal to them?

Maelstrop · 30/12/2018 17:10

Having been on a dog friendly beach in the north east on Boxing Day, we could easily have had a picnic, it was certainly warm enough, but there must have been 100 dogs! It would have been carnage!

coffeekittens · 30/12/2018 17:11

It’s a bit weird that they’d chose to have a family bbq on a beach that’s less nice than the other one and have the potential to have dogs roaming. I’d be a little bit annoyed if I were you OP but really you’d have had no right to tell them where they should and shouldn’t be.

Luvey · 30/12/2018 17:11

Bettyboo I think you're right! Grin
Waaaaay too invested in this!

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 30/12/2018 17:15

LOL Luvey Christmas cabin fever gets to us all! Grin

MakeAHouseAHome · 30/12/2018 17:16

So my dog wouldn't go and harm himself on the bbq so I would have let him off his lead and let him do as he pleased in terms of annoying them etc and should they dare say a word I would have gone ballistic haha.

But I see why you didn't want to risk it.

Babygrey7 · 30/12/2018 17:16

Yabu

It's not a "dog beach" only, it is still primarily for humans

If you want a beach just for your dog, buy your own private beach Grin

Ellapaella · 30/12/2018 17:23

I'm on the North East coast and people frequently have bbq's down on the beach in winter, particularly over new year. I was down on the beach with my dog and dc today - it was beautiful and sunny and the beach was as crowded as it is in summer!

OP - I think it's your responsibility to keep your dog under control though and not allow it to get close to the bbq, and I say this also as a dog owner who takes her dog to the beach every single day of the year.
If your dog won't come away from a bbq when you call it then you were right to put it on the lead. I'm glad you didn't say anything to the people.
You could perhaps work on recall training with your dog for a bit so that you can reliably call it back and away from certain people/situations? Then no lead for a lead and everyone's a winner.

Aridane · 30/12/2018 17:26

It's not a dog beach for dogs, it's just you're allowed dogs on there. It's not just for your use so YABU.

This!

Totally cracking up at "dog shagger loaf"!Grin

I agree with Luvey

poochuspoochus · 30/12/2018 17:28

I think I would feel a bit pissed off but also be aware I was being unreasonable. Much like I feel about all the fair weather park users making my dog walk more stressful in the summer.

ShalomJackie · 30/12/2018 17:29

At Wells-next-the-Sea there is a dog beach and a non dog beach but I never even realised this until I had been going for over 10 years and always with a friend who had a dog and she was the one who first took me there.

They are not purely for use by dog owners. They are beaches that allow dogs so if the family are not bothered by having dogs around them they are entitled to use the beach for whatever purpose they want,

LikeARedBalloon · 30/12/2018 17:29

OP you sound like the man who told me I should not walk along the beach when I got annoyed that his dog jumped up and bit the sandwich I was eating. Umm no, how about you control your unleashed dog on a public beach! Dogs might be allowed but that doesn't make it a dog only beach.

Nanny0gg · 30/12/2018 17:35

What if a family with dogs had wanted a bbq?

nicoala1 · 30/12/2018 17:36

There must be more dogs than humans around these days. They are EVERYWHERE, I am telling you all now.

As long as they don't jump up on me and try to slather me, or bite me it's all good. But honestly.

Anyway, the beaches are 1. dog free, 2. dogs allowed. Nothing suggests to me that humans are banned from the no.2 dogs banned beach!

Ah well. Enjoy your doggies.

ILoveChristmasLights · 30/12/2018 17:38

I get that it’s very annoyingly, but you’d have been bang out of order to have said anything.

If your dog doesn’t have reliable recall that’s no one’s problem but yours. Either work on it or accept that actually your dog shouldn’t ever be off lead, it’s dangerous for others and your dog if your dog will not come to you on command.

I do understand it’s not easy. One of mine was never off a lead unless it was a fenced area and we were the only ones there. She would/could not come on command (sight and hearing issues), it was frustrating as mostly she’d have been fine, but I wouldn’t take the risk.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 30/12/2018 17:41

As stated I didn't let him off the lead. I probably wouldn't have said anything to the absolute yahs with their wine glasses as hence posting here wasn't quite sure how this lies.

It's just very annoying. I would never take the dog anywhere he isn't allowed and or places I know there are toddlers (who have food close to nose level) or regular picnic spots. I'm not an arse.

I just want to walk him somewhere a bit more freely!!!

Greensleeves · 30/12/2018 17:45

Why are you so fixated on their choice of drinking vessel? Confused It just makes you sound like a knob. Why wouldn't they bring glasses if they are having a nice picnic on the beach.

There is no such thing as a "dog beach". There is a stretch of public beach on which dog walking is not prohibited. You are still expected to control your animal, behave appropriately and co-exist with the general public who may be enjoying normal beach activities such as paddling, picnicking and making sandcastles. HTH

MissRhubarb · 30/12/2018 17:47

Before we got our dog I didn't realise that dog-friendly and non-dog beaches were even a thing. It was a friend who mentioned that I could look it up online when I said we were planning a walk. I don't think it's something the dogless necessarily think about at all OP. They might afterwards - if they got to a beach that was crawling with dogs, but you're making an assumption that dogs are on everyone's radar. I do get that as a dog owner myself. But you would have been v. unreasonable to speak to that family as they were doing nothing wrong.

luckylavender · 30/12/2018 17:49

The 'yahs?' You sound so nice OP.

nicoala1 · 30/12/2018 17:55

Oh dear Lord. The doggies are starting to rule the world now!

Look, write to your local Council and state quite categorically that you believe that only dogs and owners should be allowed on dog friendly beach, no BBQ no nothing, just walkers and their dogs.

Let us know how you get on.

FuckingYuleLog · 30/12/2018 17:56

Yabu! Just because your dog is allowed on the beach it doesn’t mean that they take priority over the people who are also allowed on the beach. If you haven’t trained it properly to come when you call then you need to keep them on a lead!
You can’t insist that humans don’t use the beach just because you can’t control your pet!

spreadingchestnuttree · 30/12/2018 18:03

I don't have a dog, and wouldn't even look at the sign to see if dogs are allowed or not. It certainly wouldn't cross my mind that if I had a picnic I'd be pissing anyone off! YABU
