To cut my lovely long hair?

shouldicutmyhair · 30/12/2018 13:08

Attaching two pictures none of which are of my hair. However the first one is very similar to my hair the second is to how I think I want it cut.
Nearly everyone I ask thinks I'm mad. I do love my hair it definitely one of my best features. But I have had the same look now for over 16 years. I really fancy a change.

I’d get it cut, but then I don’t like long hair at all (on me, it’s nice on others)

ginghamstarfish · 30/12/2018 14:10

They are both of long hair, one a bit longer than the other! I think long hair can look boring and samey, it's like 85% of women have the same style these days, one clump of hair going down the back, a clump on each side to the front. Go for something different!

JillScarlet · 30/12/2018 14:14

Cut it.
For most / many people a shorter style brings out their features and character better.
But I am not a fan of what is essentially dead stuff hanging off anyine’s head for the sake of it. I don’t find it attractive.

ScreamingValenta · 30/12/2018 14:15

I think if you 'love your hair' and see it as one of your best features, you shouldn't cut it drastically.

CoughLaughFart · 30/12/2018 14:15

Hmm I always think people urge others to cut their hair because they are jealous of people with nice long hair.

But the OP’s friends are encouraging her NOT to cut it.

altiara · 30/12/2018 14:16

Cut it! The second pic is still long hair so it’s not too dramatic. Then if you want it slightly longer or shorter, go from there.
I had 6 inches cut off my hair and it’s now a dream to wash and style, yet still long enough to not be too different.

OnlineAlienator · 30/12/2018 14:28

I'd do it, its not a huge change like a pixie cut and will grow back or you can get extensions. The first is 'nice' but very generic thesedays, the choppier cut has a bit more about it

Whisky2014 · 30/12/2018 14:32

CoughLaughFart But everyone on MN is!!

Lweji · 30/12/2018 14:40

Including people who alternate between the two? Grin

sashh · 30/12/2018 14:41

Check out the little princess trust, you can send them your hair for a wig.

I've done it a couple of ties, they are due another donation.

JillScarlet · 30/12/2018 14:44

Whisky2014 tne ‘jealousy’ angle makes no sense to me. People with great long hair are often the ones with good short hair, too.

My hair is thick, manageable and glossy. I just don’t think it does me any favours hanging down the back of my head.

I am jealous of women with long necks who look good with an elegant up do.

Thirtyrock39 · 30/12/2018 14:49

Shoulder length hair is much more flattering than really long hair. Whenever I see a hair style I really like it's always mid length. I think really long hair is surprisingly hard to pull off.

Nope, evangelical about how much easier it is to look after (with the right cut) And alsoi am keen to counteract the very definite pressure that some women get to keep, their hair as long as possible. I’m very aware that for every time I say try it you might like it, there are probably 10 friends and family saying omg nooo you can’t possibly cut your gorgeous hair off.

There’s a thread on S&B at the moment about hair extensions, ppl debating spending a lot of money, time and discomfort because they feel unhappy with their own hair because it’s too thin. I did wonder how many of those people would actually probably look great with a shorter cut. (But obvs would never be so insensitive oto say it on the actual thread)

Flusteredwintertime · 30/12/2018 14:54

I did this in October. Long (poker straight though) hair and I was sick of it, got my hairdresser to chop it all to shoulder length and I love it. So much easier to maintain and I haven't missed my long hair at all (I really though I would and so put it off for months before finally going for it). Plus my ends were in terrible condition so I needed to have a good chunck chopped off. Even if you end up not liking it hair grows back!

animallikeyou · 30/12/2018 14:59

I would cut it and donate the hair to a charity that makes children’s wigs :)

animallikeyou · 30/12/2018 14:59

Sorry, any charity that makes wigs for those who have lost their hair.

PenCreed · 30/12/2018 15:02

I have very thick, curly hair that used to be the length of the second pic. I now have a pixie cut (that’s what I thought you’d be suggesting when I opened this thread). You aren’t suggesting anything that drastic or hard to grow out, so do it!

The80sweregreat · 30/12/2018 15:21

Looks lovely as it is.
Can you not wear it up ? I had my long hair cut once and regretted it. Been growing it longer ever since!

FannyAndMoonface · 30/12/2018 15:22

Please if you do cut it consider the little princess trust charity for your locksSmile

OyOy · 30/12/2018 15:25

Only if you really want to - as others have said the cut is not that drastic at all- will grow back in eight months or so!

If you can afford it, get it cut in two stages?

Or if you fancy a change then a semi permanent colour or a long fringe?

You do you.

MoreCheeseDear · 30/12/2018 15:26

I had mine cut and never regretted it. Took 10 years off me straight away.

KC225 · 30/12/2018 15:27

I like both. Go for the cut. Grow it out if you don't like it

SprogletsMum · 30/12/2018 15:30

I had a similar length change a couple of months ago and I love it. Yes hair grows back but I'm not going to let mine it's so much easier shorter.

EmiliaFart · 30/12/2018 15:39

I think very long hair can look dated and often drags down the face of the wearer, regardless of age. Unless by some miracle it's bouncy, blow-dried perfection on a daily basis.

The second cut is much more modern and stylish while still having decent length to tie up etc.

My vote is to cut it.

BillywigSting · 30/12/2018 15:48

Do it!

My hair grows ridiculously fast (so much so that every hairdresser I have had has commented on it) and I regularly let it get to waist length and then lop the lot off at about ear level. I've never regretted it. It always feels so much lighter and somehow less irritating shorter.

It's back again six months later.

Have completely given up on fringes though. Need cutting at least once a week.
