To ask where I can get a wedding dress that doesn’t cost the earth?

I’m getting married in October. We’re having a small wedding and not spending a lot on it but i’d still like a nice wedding dress for the day. Happy to spend £200 ish, don’t want to be spending hundreds and hundreds when the actual wedding isn’t going to cost much!
I want something pretty plain and tulle. That’s about my criteria lol. I’m from Manchester so I need recommendations for shops or maybe even somebody that could make a simple dress for me. Also open to the idea of getting something online and having it adjusted etc if need be so it fits well. I’ll attach a couple of pictures of the sort of thing I was thinking of.

The last one is lovey but Preferably with thin straps like the first two as I don’t do strapless!!

Got mine from JJSHouse, custom fitted. Cost less than £150 for dress, hoop skirt and veil. Fitted well, dress was much nicer than I expected - big tulle ballgown with embroidered bodice. I ordered it well in advance so I could make other arrangements if necessary, decided it was worth the risk for me because I'm a difficult shape so would have needed to pay a seamstress regardless, but others might think it is too big a risk.

Is there a charity shop that has a bridal section close to you? My closest city has an entire shop dedicated to bridal and bridesmaid gowns. Would still be close to your budget, but you'd be getting a £600 gown for at least a third or quarter of the full cost.

www.ebay.co.uk/str/RED-CARPET-DRESSES-AND-GOWNS Try this seller on ebay. My sister got a beautiful wedding dress for £50 and I got DD's prom dress for under £15!

LeSquigh · 29/12/2018 19:03

Not all Chinese dresses are bad - my sister had one that was BEAUTIFUL and was about £80.

I agree with eBay- actually found my dream dress on there a year after they stopped making them, RRP 900, bought for 150, and it only needs taking in slightly and a dry clean. Good luck :)

Have a look on asos! There are a few. This one above is lovely but only limited sizes as it is in the sale! But there are more & I think most are under £200

I got mine second hand off eBay.
It had all been professionally cleaned and was stunning.
It was around the £100 mark and was being sold by a wedding dress boutique type place.
I do think it's best to get a good second hand one then a cheap Chinese one.

CurbsideProphet · 30/12/2018 10:33

In Preston city centre St Catherine's Hospice has a bridal charity shop.

I'm getting married next autumn. I've bought a sample dress for £300 compared to £1000 if I had wanted one custom made for me. There are lots of options Smile

Your best bet is eBay- amazing (used) dresses at knock down pricing.

I bought mine from monsoon, it was lovely and was around £100.

Honeyroar · 14/04/2019 11:57

A charity called Dr Kershaws has set up a second hand wedding dress shop in Oldham's Spindles shopping centre. I just gave them a brand new dress. They looked like they had a lot of dresses. Oldham is on a tram link from Manchester..

Lonecatwithkitten · 14/04/2019 12:10

Oxfam have charity bridal shops.

Ebay can be good.

Have you thought about hiring rather than buying?

St Ann's Hospice shop on Cheadle High Street has a large bridal department on the first floor. Next door to the George and Dragon pub.
