To ask where I can get a wedding dress that doesn’t cost the earth?

I’m getting married in October. We’re having a small wedding and not spending a lot on it but i’d still like a nice wedding dress for the day. Happy to spend £200 ish, don’t want to be spending hundreds and hundreds when the actual wedding isn’t going to cost much!
I want something pretty plain and tulle. That’s about my criteria lol. I’m from Manchester so I need recommendations for shops or maybe even somebody that could make a simple dress for me. Also open to the idea of getting something online and having it adjusted etc if need be so it fits well. I’ll attach a couple of pictures of the sort of thing I was thinking of.

The last one is lovey but Preferably with thin straps like the first two as I don’t do strapless!!

There is this place - they have one in Stockport:

It's Essence of Australia. Original price £1200 but was used for bridal shows so I paid £600.

Another vote for Monsoon here! I got mine for £180, a skater style which really flattered my figure (and hid the 4 month baby bump lurking underneath! Wink)

dottyp0104 · 29/12/2018 17:48

Try monsoon. They have sale on at moment. I got my daughters dress for my brothers wedding today... less than half price

Somewhereovertherainbow13 · 29/12/2018 17:48

Mine was eBay but new. It came from China so postage was expensive but dress itself was only about £20. Even though it was supposed to be made to measure it still need altering but all in it came to about £200. That was 10 years ago though so maybe more expensive now

Try Celebration Village www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjo_cWizsXfAhVCQBoKHbHGDkQQFjAAegQIEhAC&url=https%3A%2F%2Fcelebration-village.co.uk%2F&usg=AOvVaw03vqRXa4rYYjgNw0Pna5Xs kind of the bottom of town near Victoria Station) -really big shop with everything you need for any celebration in it - don't worry from the outside that it looks big and random Its lovely! When I got my dress from there (2010) they were really lovely, had a huge selection and were really keen to get something that was right for me. Had loads of dresses in all shapes and sizes and prices and I got a dress that I would not have ever tried on on my own, but they knew what would work and were not bothered by whatever budget you had (compared to some places I went to....) Enjoy shopping and planning!

Have you looked at any bridesmaid dresses? So many different designs and many come in ivory or white and cost a fraction of a wedding dress. My wedding dress was a white knee length bridesmaid one and cost £190 brand new including alterations.

Mine was from Monsoon.

I got my emergency dress from Debenhams. A seamstress had royally messed up the original dress I had bought and so I had to find something beautiful but cheap only 5 days before our wedding. I preferred the one from Debenhams in the end, and it only cost £125.

HotInWinter · 29/12/2018 17:58

Other high street shops with bridal ranges I know about are Dorthy Perkins and Debenhams.

winkingdemon · 29/12/2018 18:18

I’m 5’11” and a size 18 (but hoping that in the next 10 months that number will have reduced!) so I’m worried I won’t be able to find anything for my size or until I’ve lost some weight

I'm a size 20 and got mine for 200 from copplestones bridal in liverpool, the have dresses you can try on and take home that day. There is one in bolton as well which is huge!

Peeeas · 29/12/2018 18:22

Oxfam had a decent range of sizes - I needed a 10, and there was definitely less in the 8 - 12 sizes, than say 14-18 where there were more options.

But probably varies by store / what they happen to have in at the time.

Not as fluffy as your pictures but the same sort of shape!

Tantrumschmantrum · 29/12/2018 18:26

Hi and try a load in first so you know which shape suits you best then look for rentals/ local people selling and see if you can try on before you buy. Much better idea than buying new as it only gets worn once and sits there in a bag for decades! Good luck

JJS House

Myshinynewname · 29/12/2018 18:34

Sorry I don’t have any suggestions of shops but make sure you actually go dress shopping and try lots on before looking online. What I had imagined would suit me and what I ended up with were poles apart! The dresses you have linked are all beautiful though.

TooMinty · 29/12/2018 18:36

I got mine from Stella's Wedding Dresses in Didsbury. The owner was lovely but bonkers. It was 15 years ago and I spent less than £100. Monsoon also used to do lovely dresses for a reasonable price but they were too long for me.

ForgotTheBastardElfAgain · 29/12/2018 18:40

Wed2b for me too, although a different branch.

Tink2007 · 29/12/2018 18:40

My wedding dress should have been £1500 and I got it for £325 including the alterations in a wedding dress shop that was closing down.

This is a cute one on eBay at the moment at a 16/18 similar to one you added

There used to be a charity shop in Cheadle High street with a bridal floor upstairs, always had lovely dresses! Not sure if still there though.
