I can fit into a pair of size 16 skinny jeans with a BMI of 34. Well actually the waist is loose. I have an hourglass basic shape and am quite short.
My weight has fluctuated quite alot over the years and I am thankfully on a downward trend again. Although will have a blip Christmas.
I always thought that a size 16 was kind of an overweight size rather than obese.
Or is it just vanity sizing.

Sizes vary wildly. People carry weight in different places.

Didntwanttochangemyname · 29/12/2018 15:59

I've got a BMI of 34 and am a size 20, I certainly feel as obese as I am!

madcatladyforever · 29/12/2018 16:08

I have a BMI of 34 and I don't have a snowballs chance in hell of getting into a pair of skinny jeans. You must have slim legs.

Ryderryder · 29/12/2018 16:09

I think that maybe my weight distribution has changed since exercising regularly. Also I guess Asda clothes possibly come up big. Definately an 18 on top.

I would say vanity sizing. But I say that as someone who is much smaller; think 8-10, i'm finding it more and more common to find clothes too baggy, and fitting easily into age 14-15 which is pretty depressing.

Well done you on exercising though, and hopefully fitting into a 16 is a boost to the morale. Smile

Bringbackthestrioes · 29/12/2018 16:15

Asda jeans are getting more and more generous. As a teen & until 30’s I was a size 12 and lovely and slim. I am now 1.5 stone heavier and have mistakenly been asked if I was pregnant yet Asda jeans in a size 12 need a belt. I have one H&M pair of trousers in a size 10. It is infuriating!

babysharkah · 29/12/2018 16:15

Where are they from?

I'm a 16, BMI is 28.

People carry weight differently.

babysharkah · 29/12/2018 16:16

Oh sorry saw you said Asda.

Never had anything from there but Sainsbury's are huge, Next are quite big too. I wouldn't fit my little too in an clean in Zara or mango trousers.

Cheekysquirrel · 29/12/2018 16:19

Sizes are getting bigger.
I’m a 6 now in places like next but an 8-10 in day New Look or Top Shop. My bmi is 18. I’m not slim though and really not toned.

Topttumps · 30/12/2018 01:00

Clothes sizes vary so much but well done for weight loss.

ThistleAmore · 30/12/2018 01:24

I'm tall, toned, very fit (I'm very sporty and train a lot) and very happy with how my body looks and functions. My measurements - 39-30-38 - are technically a 14, by most standard sizing charts.

However, in some shops, I can be a 10, which is nonsense: I'm blatantly not a 10.

Vanity sizing is a huge thing.

ThistleAmore · 30/12/2018 01:25

Also, I have a BMI of 22/23.

Cherries101 · 30/12/2018 01:31

An Asda size 16 is usually a size 20 on the high street. I wear a size 16 from topshop and H&M and consider myself a proper size 16 with a big wobbly bum, hips and waist (and wear a 12 in Asda).

Cherries101 · 30/12/2018 01:31

Size 16 in jeans. I wear a size 14 in non-jeans

Racecardriver · 30/12/2018 01:33

Asda clothing dies come up big ime. Although it depends on what you are comparing it to I suppose.

ThistleAmore · 30/12/2018 01:41

I bought a size 10 coat in H&M the other week, which fits me (size 12/14), my size 8/10 niece and my size 14/16 sister.

We call it 'the magic coat'.

IceRebel · 30/12/2018 07:54

An Asda size 16 is usually a size 20 on the high street.

That is absolutely shocking, no wonder there's so much denial when it comes to weight Shock

LittleAlbatross · 30/12/2018 07:57

Asda clothes are massive in my experience. I'm a size 10 in there and a 12 everywhere else.

Frenchfancy00 · 30/12/2018 14:55

I think that maybe some if the Asda sizes come up big but not everything. Coats come up small.

MardAsSnails · 30/12/2018 15:04

I have a BMI of 33 and am having to wear a belt tonight with (M&S) size 12 skinnies. They come up and down without unfastening and are verging on being unwearable.

BMI is total bollocks. I’ve lost a lot of weight recently and have been exercising a lot. I’m still definitely overweight and have a way to go, but by no means am I as obese as that ‘statistic’ shows.

LaurieFairyCake · 30/12/2018 18:22

My bmi is over 40 and I still wear size 16 (next) skinnies

posthistoricmonsters · 30/12/2018 18:27

BMI is ridiculous for many reasons.

If you're super git and healthy but happen to be a body builder covered in muscle, it isn't taken into account. You will be called obese etc.

I've had major trouble with medical procedures in the last eighteen months because I couldn't get my BMI down. I've always had issues with my shape. And when there was nothing of me, people would try to pick me up then complain I was heavy. My tiny weeny slim seven year old feels like a teenager when you try to pick her up. Some people really do seem denser in weight.

Tfoot75 · 30/12/2018 18:31

My BMI was 33 at one point and I have never had clothing bigger than 14/16 bottoms and 14 top. People are different shapes and BMI is based only on height/weight not muscle mass etc. I’m 5’6” if that’s relevant. BMI currently about 26 ish and everything I wear is size 12 except when I buy size 14 tops or coats for extra length. Lots of people seem to wear size 12 and be loads lighter than me (around 11.5 stone)
