Chatting to a friend about my 10 week old and she said 'would've thought knowing you that you'd have picked a less common name'

Is Isaac really that common?

And yes I told her she was rude! AIBU to think that's a result weird thing to say?

I know a few Isaacs but wouldn't say it's that popular.

I don't see why you think it's rude for her to say so, though. Perhaps she knew more than a few and to her it's quite common? YABU to call her rude

PooleySpooley · 28/12/2018 15:37

20 odd years ago it was very unusual but it’s more common now.

It’s a great name Grin

BollocksToBrexit · 28/12/2018 15:37

It's a well established name but I wouldn't say it was that common. I've never met anyone called Isaac in my 50 years.

clpsmum · 28/12/2018 15:38

It's a gorgeous name I love it. Your friend was rude and I'm glad you told her so! Maybe she was expecting a wacky kind of name

StudioGii · 28/12/2018 15:38

I think it's a little bit rude but may be the way I've interpreted it...

Well according to bounty it was number 25 this year so yeh I would say common.

KC225 · 28/12/2018 15:39

I like the name Isaac. Don't know any.

JupiterBelle · 28/12/2018 15:39

I’ve taught and know a few Isaacs but it’s not common (popular) in the way that Charlie and Alfie are.

Chocolatecake12 · 28/12/2018 15:39

It’s a really lovely name. My Isaac is 12 now andxwebt all the way through primary school being the only one in the whole school.
Now he’s in secondary there’s another in his year group of 150 children.
I think I it’s gained in popularity in recent years and it’s often suggested on here on the baby names thread. But it certainly isn’t a common name - how rude of your ‘friend’
Enjoy your lovely baby Isaac - the name means laughter and mine makes me laugh every single day!

Birdie6 · 28/12/2018 15:40

I like the name, but yes I'd say it's fairly common. Most "Bible names" are pretty common and have always been in my experience. I don't know why you told her she was rude - she was just stating a fact which is true.

Thewifipasswordis · 28/12/2018 15:40

Very popular. Not 'common' if she meant it that way.

StudioGii · 28/12/2018 15:41

I didn't have a go at her, she's my mate. I told her 'don't be so rude you cheeky git' Grin

I know two Isaacs, both under two. I don’t know any others. I’d say it was getting more common, but of course this is only anecdotal!

JumpingJunipersBatman · 28/12/2018 15:42

I know 3 Isaacs.

WhatOnEarthDoIDoNow · 28/12/2018 15:43

I know a few but I volunteer with my very large churches Sunday school Grin lots of biblical names there. It's a lovely name who cares if it's common to her. Outside of the Sunday School I know of one other Isaac and it's my friends baby cousin who I've never met.

PickettBowtruckles · 28/12/2018 15:44

According to mumsnet it’s number 24 in top 100 baby boys names for 2018. www.mumsnet.com/baby-names/most-popular-baby-names-england-wales

It doesn’t make it any less of a lovely name because it’s popular. I don’t think your friend was particularly rude in saying it was a common name (assuming she meant common as in popular!) if she thought you were more likely to pick an unusual name. I know I’ve had friends who I’d be very shocked if they picked Oliver/Olivia type names and would probably say the same to them.

Mulberry72 · 28/12/2018 15:44

There were four Isaacs in my DS’s class at school and I have three friends who chose the name for their children.

HopeGarden · 28/12/2018 15:51

Isaac was the 24th most popular name in England and Wales in 2017 so it’s quite popular right now.

Moominfan · 28/12/2018 15:55

I know a few isaacs. To say the name is common is very rude. It's a lovely name that is a popular choice

lauraannk · 28/12/2018 15:57

I don't think it's common at all and even if it was it's a great name.
Currently considering it for the baby in my tummy so might be slightly biased Smile

mumofblueeyes · 28/12/2018 15:57

I have an Isaac and still think it is a beautiful name. He is 13 now. I hope he would have chosen Ike or something cool for a nickname but sadly his childminder shortened it to Zac (there was another Isaac in the small group) and it has stuck ever since. So I call him Isaac and all his mates call him Zac.

Witchend · 28/12/2018 16:00

I don't think she meant common so much as popular.

Simply that by knowing your personality (or possibly older siblings names) that she thought you would have picked a more unusual name.

GinasGirl · 28/12/2018 16:01

My Isaac is 18 and I knew no one by that name when he was born, in fact we had a few 'that's very unusual' comments when he came along.
It's much more popular now, but we've still only met one other.

PooleySpooley · 28/12/2018 16:03

GinasGirl

Mine is 22 and we got lots of Hmm faces when we told people his name Grin
