Isaac a common name?

Chatting to a friend about my 10 week old and she said 'would've thought knowing you that you'd have picked a less common name'

Is Isaac really that common?

And yes I told her she was rude! AIBU to think that's a result weird thing to say?

Did you think she meant "common" as in " low class" ? Is that why you thought she was rude ? I'm sure she meant " popular", which isn't rude at all .

GinasGirl · 28/12/2018 16:12

Same Pooley! Plus exclamations that they didn't know we are Jewish. 'we're not' I'd say 'oh...'

PooleySpooley · 28/12/2018 16:13

Oh yes my grandfather said “I didn’t know he (DS dad) was Jewish?!” Grin

In your face people trailblazers we are! Grin

Rockbird · 28/12/2018 16:19

Lovely name, not rare but not common either. There are only 2 in our school. She was very rude, I'm glad you told her so!

Beautyandthe · 28/12/2018 16:20

Yes it is.
I know 3 baby / toddlers named Isaac. And one adult.

horsesheep · 28/12/2018 16:22

It is common now. I know multiple isaacs. 3 of them adults and quite a few are children. Not all from the same area as well so it's not just my area it's popular in.

Why's your friend 'rude' for saying the name is common when it is? Also what's so wrong with having a common name?

StudioGii · 28/12/2018 16:25

See @Beautyandthe I wouldn't say that's common. Popular maybe. But not as popular as other names. I know 13 people called a particular name, and that's just adults. I would say that was fairly common, but still wouldn't say to someone 'you've given your child a common name' because it's unnecessary.

nothinglikeadame · 28/12/2018 16:25

I think it's one of those names that parents think are really unique , but it isn't.

Sorry O.P. !

Beautyandthe · 28/12/2018 16:26

And I don't think she was rude to point out that it's common. As it is, it's in the list of most popular names this year.

abcriskringle · 28/12/2018 16:32

It's not common but not unusual I'd say. I have one myself and think it's a fabulous name!

BikeRunSki · 28/12/2018 16:35

It’s oretty common. My DC are 7 and 10, there is at least one in each of their school classes; one more in each of their swimming classes, one different one at Beavers and 2 different ones at Cubs. So, they know 8 between them, aged 6-10.

stoplickingthetelly · 28/12/2018 16:39

Maybe it depends where you live? There are 3 in my dc sch. As a teacher I've only ever come across 2 in 13 years. Probably more popular now than 20/30 years ago, but I still wouldn't say it was a common name near me.

thebabessavedme · 28/12/2018 16:58

so long as your surname is not Hunt i think its a lovely name!

Juanbablo · 28/12/2018 17:07

I know a few Isaac's but I didn't think it was hugely popular. I love it though.

GreenDinosaur · 28/12/2018 17:31

It sounds to me like she thought you'd choose something a bit different like Hercules or Megatron rather than the fairly mainstream but lovely Isaac.

GreenDinosaur · 28/12/2018 17:31

Are you generally known for being a bit bonkers?

themartinipolice · 28/12/2018 17:31

I only know one Isaac, he's 9 and he's awesome. Disclaimer: I made him.

It's a wonderful name OP, enjoy your baby!

GreenDinosaur · 28/12/2018 17:32

In a nice way!

Woohoo1 · 28/12/2018 17:34

Agree with thebabessavedme: lovely only if Hunt is not your surname

EmUntitled · 28/12/2018 17:36

Maybe she was expecting you to go for something really "out there" like Ocean or Aristotle. Isaac is a fairly "normal" and relatively common name.

Yura · 28/12/2018 17:39

i know 5 Isaacs. all between 1 and 6 years old. it seems to be in fashion in the last years - but why care if you love it?

BettyOBarley · 28/12/2018 17:40

I think Isaac is becoming more popular and there are 2 in my DDs reception class. I don't think she was particularly rude, just stating a fact really. My DS has a top 3 name, but I couldn't give a monkeys - it's a nice name!

OneStepMoreFun · 28/12/2018 17:40

Not 'common.' More mainstream than it used to be. I love it. It was my top choice for DS1 but DH vetoed it as too weird. He thought DS would get teased.

SluggishSnail · 28/12/2018 17:42

My Isaac is a teenager. The name was 55th in the national statistics list the year before he was born, but is more popular now.

He hasn't met many other Isaacs. That said, three of my colleagues have DC called Isaac and there's only about 20 of us who have children!

squaksquak · 28/12/2018 17:47

Yes it’s popular but it’s a lovely name and will grow with him
