This morning half asleep I put £5 worth of petrol in my diesel car..realised and started to put diesel in.
I've drove it since on motorway and it's fine.
Because it was a small amount will it be ok?

Yep you pretty much fucked it by driving.

Years ago I did this and put £70 of petrol in my diesel car. Luckily I noticed before I drove it and had it drained. Cost me a hundred or so to have it drained plus the wasted petrol! Luckily the guy felt sorry for me and gave me more diesel than he should have in replacement Grin it was an expensive mistake!

Badstyley · 28/12/2018 13:06

You need to get it drained. Petrol in a Diesel engine is bad bad bad.

I remember my dad doing this when I was about 16, when we were in France. Just to make it worse he was working as a petrol pump engineer at the time.

Don’t worry, we all have brain farts. You need to get that tank drained though, ad don’t be surprised if you have problems for a bit afterwards and have to bump start the car.

sabbby82 · 28/12/2018 13:08

I did same, topped the rest of tank with diesel and it was fine. Truckers do this supposedly especially in cold weather. Dont waste money on draining tank.

Lazypuppy · 28/12/2018 13:08

I've always been told to not turn the engine on as the tank can be drained, and you don't want the wrong fuel going around your car

londonrach · 28/12/2018 13:10

Youve two choices here either drain the tank or as its small amount fill the car up with diesel. Do not drive it as it is. My parents in law have a diesel car and do this more regularly then they should!

Freshprincess · 28/12/2018 13:13

I did this once and a mechanic told me to fill it up and then keep topping it up for a week to dilute the petrol down. It was actually covered as part of my insurance so I didn't do it in the end.

Seniorcitizen1 · 28/12/2018 13:15

I did the same - put c£5 petrol in diesel and then filled the tank with diesel to no ill effects years later. You should be ok

Karmin · 28/12/2018 13:15

Actually, You can usually get away with up to 10 litres of petrol in a 60-litre tank. Fill up with high-lubricity diesel (such as Shell V-Power Nitro Plus) and keep doing exactly that. Don't allow the tank to be more than half-empty for about 2,000 miles

BlueJava · 28/12/2018 13:16

The biggest issue is that diesel cars also use the fuel as the lubricant, whereas petrol cars don't - this means it will be short of lubrican't. However, if you have a practically empty tank and put £5 worth of petrol in then I would just fill up with diesel and then keep topping it up repeatedly (rather than letting the tank run down for the next few months). This will dilute it over time. Have a read here. www.sciencefocus.com/future-technology/whats-worse-putting-petrol-in-a-diesel-engine-or-diesel-in-a-petrol-engine/

Nanalisa60 · 28/12/2018 13:18

I did the same a few years back!!dont let that tank get less then half empty for 2,000 miles keep topping it up ,and piuin the better quality of diesel in!! My car was fine.

Nanalisa60 · 28/12/2018 13:18

Putting in

ilikefastcars · 28/12/2018 13:19

Full it up with diesel to dilute it further!

LagunaBubbles · 28/12/2018 13:21

My DH did this and thankfully it was fine, it was my car!

APositiveMind · 28/12/2018 13:23

If it was onky £5 worth try completely filling your tank with diesel to dilute it. My OH is a mechanic that's what he told me to do when I got my desiel car because I've always had petrol.

Lantern92 · 28/12/2018 13:25

Brim it with diesel, get the fuel filter changed and a cleaner put through. When the tank is empty change fuel filter again. Will be fine only 5 quid worth. The horror stories are only when people have filled it with petrol. Qualified mechanic btw.

Blobby10 · 28/12/2018 13:25

Not as bad as diesel in a petrol engine which would completely screw your engine. Suggest calling garage or breakdown service to get advice as modern Diesel engines are better equipped than older ones to deal with Mis-fuelling apparently

Jellycatspyjamas · 28/12/2018 13:27

I’ve done this twice with two different cars. We have a local mechanic who maintains both our cars, his advice was to fill up with diesel, go for a long drive and top up the diesel again. Both cars were fine.

SusanneLinder · 28/12/2018 13:30

Personally, I wouldnt risk it. I did it once, and thought it would be ok to dilute it. Car stopped after a while and had to get car drained anyway.

RomanyRoots · 28/12/2018 13:33

No, you need to get it drained immediately before starting the engine or it will require a full engine clean. You shouldn't have started the engine let alone drive it, are you mad?

elf1985 · 28/12/2018 13:35

I work in a petrol station. Asking as it's less than 10% of a full tank you should be fine. Fill it to the brim and in a week or 2 run some redex through

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 28/12/2018 13:38

"Due to the designs of fuel filler and petrol pump nozzles you can’t misfuel a petrol with diesel but you can the other way around "

Oh yes you can if the petrol car is old enough :(
Been there, done that.
Fucking sucked.

However, it didn't bugger up the engine entirely, like petrol into a diesel car might have done - just needed to be drained and refilled with petrol.

Yambabe · 28/12/2018 13:41

I've done it too. Put a small amount of petrol in, realised, called DH (mechanic) in panic. He told me to fill it to the brim with diesel and not worry about it. I did, it was fine.

Mine was an older car though, I'm not sure if newer diesel engines might be more sensitive?

CoraPirbright · 28/12/2018 13:42

DH put about a couple of quids worth of petrol into our discovery last Christmas and then sat for hours waiting for the AA. They told him if he had then filled up the tank with diesel it would have been perfectly ok. You might just about get away with it if you filled right up with the correct fuel but I think it was foolish to just drive off and hope. Fingers crossed for you.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 28/12/2018 13:42

I put petrol in a Diesel engine once - it was quite an old car (maybe 10 years old at then time, nearly 10 years ago) and I rang the dealers in a panic. Officially their line was to have the tank drained, off the record the mechanic (who I knew quite well) told me not to worry, fill it with diesel and drive it hard over every speedhump and pothole I could find/brake and accelerate hard to mix it in.

It was fine.

AllTakenSoRubbishUsername · 28/12/2018 13:46

Fill it right up to capacity with diesel asap
