Posting here for traffic as I'm looking for inspiration for my new years resolution/s. What resolution did you make last year and manage to keep, which you'd recommend because it's really made a difference?

What works for me is choosing my goals and then scrutinising my choices by asking myself "does it align with my goals?". It usually makes me pause for long enough to switch the autopilot off and make a conscious decision.

If I decide to do it, then afterwards, I ask myself if it was worth it. It helps in the future. For instance, I had the cake last week and felt bloated and blah so I will skip it this time saving money and calories. Or I really didn't feel like going nordic walking but I did and then felt energetic and good about myself so I'm going to force myself to go out today as well.

Good luck!

I have had the same one for two years and stuck to it both years - you might think this is sad but my resolution was to not spend anymore money on candy crush etc

Noonemournsthewicked · 28/12/2018 12:23

Give blood.

ASundayWellSpent · 28/12/2018 12:23

DOnate money otherwise being wasted to charity. Eg fag money in my case, gave up and donate instead, helps keep my resolve

nutellalove · 28/12/2018 12:23

Reduce time on social media. I deleted the Instagram and Facebook app on my phone (but kept my account so could log in to both on my computer every so often. I found I barely checked it as am on my computer much less than my phone)

clinkers · 28/12/2018 12:23

2 years ago: to wear my jewellery rather than leaving it a box
last year: did a good reads challenge of 30 books as I hadnt read in years

This year: I'm going to take myself more seriously and be more "upmarket" professionally . I am one of these people who plays down what I do and it does me no favours.

SkeletonSkins · 28/12/2018 12:25

I made a resolution ten years ago to say ‘yes’ when invited to new things and to make a specific effort to go to new things. I met my OH at one of these things I said yes to and we’ve been together ten years!

I started cycling last year for my New Years resolution between Christmas and going back to work from Mat leave in the spring. I used my DH's turbo trainer wired up to an online cycling community called 'zwift' where they simulate roads and you can do various routes. Have to say, I enjoyed it so much, did it for an hour per evening about 3 times a week. Lost the baby weight over about 4 months. Found it great for my mood too. It was harder to stick to it when back at work, but I fell pg in Sept so I will definitely go back to it at a similar time again. Highly recommend it because it's completely safe, but actually interesting and fun.

Generally I always try to make changes that I think will encourage a healthier lifestyle which I also think will be manageable.

I gave up smoking in 2012, gave up meat in 2015 and gave up dairy/eggs in 2017. This year I think I've cut my diet down so much that I don't have much else to give up, so instead I'm going to try and walk more (as I now drive to my job I barely ever walk anywhere - can feel the pounds piling on!)

Huntawaymama · 28/12/2018 13:07

2 years ago: learn to crochet, I love it now and can make all sorts
Last year: recycle more and eat more fruit. I've done both well but still need a bit more fruit.

This year: to walk more and read more. Atm I feel like once the kids are down I just sit and play on mu phone but I'm guna try and turn it off at 7pm and read

redexpat · 28/12/2018 13:11

My aim was 5 cultural events. I managed:
2 choir weekends
Stand up comedy gig
Live screening of the ballet
Singalong sound of music
Open air ballet
Book of Mormon
Choir concert (audience)

Am quite chuffed seeing it written down.

userschmoozer · 28/12/2018 13:12

Last year;
Sort out my overdraft.
Lose half a stone.

This year I plan to lose another half a stone - its only half a pound a month so its doable. And tidy up the garden, which will help me lose weight and get fitter.

EssentialHummus · 28/12/2018 13:14

Recycle more and reduce/eliminate food waste.

Get to know more of my neighbours.

Set monthly/three-monthly goals rather than distant annual ones.

Verbena87 · 28/12/2018 13:16

Eating dinner at the table every night with no phones. Will keep doing it too.

JudgeRindersMinder · 28/12/2018 13:18

Mine was the same as a pp and was to get back back into giving blood as often as possible. I’m pleased to say I did and will continue to do so, as my blood group always seems to have the lowest supply locally

AbiBranning · 28/12/2018 13:19

I gave up TV soaps 2 years ago as a resolution (ignore my username) not sure it's improved my life, but I've got a few more hours a week back.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 28/12/2018 13:23

Like skeleton my resolution a few years ago and ever since was to say yes to opportunities even if they scared me. It has been a revelation. I have done such exciting things that I would have ordinarily talked myself out of.

I also resolved to not keep good perfume or toiletries for best, and to use them daily until they are gone. I have never run out, as I get so much nice stuff for birthdays and Christmas that i have a steady supply and I feel like I am treating myself every day.

gamerwidow · 28/12/2018 13:27

Saying YES to more social things instead of being so lazy and just stating indoors. I’ve had some really nice nights out with new friends that I would have made excuses not to go to in the past.
Saying NO to taking responsibility for sorting people’s messes out. You got yourself into the situation, you can get yourself out of it. I’ll make the right sympathetic noises and be a shoulder to cry on but I’m no longer being a doormat.

Lilyhatesjaz · 28/12/2018 16:53

To cook something different from one of my many recipe books once a week, either a different meal or cake I have not tried before. I kept it up for 6 months last time and I'm going to give it a go this year.

AliceScarlett · 28/12/2018 16:59

Veganuary. Never looked back.

OneStepMoreFun · 28/12/2018 17:07

Best resolution I ever made was three years ago. It was: do something you've never done before every day.
You can start out just by walking down a new street, ordering a different coffee, going to a new restaurant, listening to new music on Spotify. But gradually you start to take more daring chances and have more fun. I ended up running an incredible project in a specialist subject I'd known nothing about at the start of that year but my 'do something new' resolution had led me to know a lot about a niche area of work.
Other really good resolutions were to make a life list and cross stuff off it every month; to keep a journal (still do - have done ever since and it's really therapeutic, as well as lovely to look back over theyears and see what we were doing, or just realise things I hoped for had happened.)

This year's resolution is to be selfish. That sounds bloody horrible but after years of being run off my feet with small children, ill family members, needy clients, demanding friends and bullying elderly parents, I've decided to put myself first and see whether my stress-related illnesses and weight gain improve.

SpeckledyHen · 28/12/2018 17:13

Mine was to only eat unprocessed foods most of the time which I achieved and lost 35lb between January and September.
No ‘ dieting ‘ feeling hungry or deprived .

EmeraldShamrock · 28/12/2018 17:14

What a great thread for some inspiration.
I have plans to make some and stick with them this year. I am bored living the same life year after year. I need to change things.

OneStepMoreFun · 28/12/2018 17:24

SpeckeldyHen - I like the sound of that one. Think I'll try that. I'm doing Dry Jan and no processed sugar Jan anyway.

BlueSarah · 28/12/2018 17:43

A couple of years ago we became a "cruelty free" household - we only buy beauty and cleaning product which have the Leaping Bunny logo to certify they have not been tested on animals. Most of the big supermarket's own brand products have been certified (even places like Aldi and Primark) so it isn't expensive or a big effort to make the switch.
