Posting here for traffic as I'm looking for inspiration for my new years resolution/s. What resolution did you make last year and manage to keep, which you'd recommend because it's really made a difference?

OP posts:
Jackshouse · 28/12/2018 17:47

To quit work.

thesnailandthewhale · 28/12/2018 17:51

Fabulous idea for a thread!

My two last year were:
(a) not buy any more 5p carrier bags
(b) unsubscribe from all my the junk emails that clutter up my inbox

JudasPrudy · 28/12/2018 17:53

To follow the organised mum method and while I haven't strictly stuck to it my house is much much better as a result of giving it a half arsed go and being part of the group.

Onlysocks · 28/12/2018 17:57

Drink more champagne. It was something to look forward to (rather than losing weight which is a slog), was nicely vague (just drinking twice a year would have met the goal) and was part of a project to value myself more.
Other resolutions have included buying and using a favourite mug and do more jigsaws.

MatildaTheCat · 28/12/2018 18:01

Not last year but my best ever resolution was to wear more dresses. Achievable and made a difference.

Last year was to spend more time with/ on my parents which is still a work in progress.

thenightsky · 28/12/2018 18:15

To cook something new once a week, instead of my old boring repertoire of spag bol, lasagne, bla bla. Very successful and now have a list of about 25 excellent dishes that all the family love.

Dry January, which I managed to carry on for 100 days (need to do this one again) .

DisplayPurposesOnly · 28/12/2018 18:30

Mine from a few years ago (which I've kept) was to buy the Big Issue every shopping trip when I saw a seller.

I realised I was only not buying it due to a combination od laziness and self-consciousness - terrible weak excuses. I gave myself a kicking and now I enjoy saying a quick hello to the sellers.

SabineUndine · 28/12/2018 18:33

About 10 years ago I made a NY resolution to recycle everything I could. Have pretty well kept it, too.

This year's is to find a new job.

GreyGardens88 · 28/12/2018 18:34

This year I'm not doing resolutions as such but making a list of 12 things I want to do or achieve in 2019. Some of them could be classed as resolutions like doing more aerobic exercise, cutting down on alcohol, but I will have other "bucket list" sort of things on there as well, like visiting the Scottish Highlands, going on a beach holiday (hate my body, so will be a challenge), seeing a west end play etc

Festivefiona · 28/12/2018 19:01

Last year was to start running. I started with just one mile and now run 12 miles each week. This year will be all about treating myself and doing what makes me feel good.

Nacreous · 28/12/2018 19:15

Last year my new year's resolution was to have a new job by the end of the year. I achieved it, and it's the best thing I've done in years. I'm now happier, less stressed, moving more, eating better. It's fab! I still struggle with stuff but I'm like a new person.

loubluee · 28/12/2018 19:23

Last year’s resolution was to stop smoking and I did it!!

Next year- read 1 book per week, visit at least 4 countries on my bucket list, attend an art exhibition, attend a ballet, watch a west end show, exercise daily.

MumW · 28/12/2018 23:17

Last year's resolution was to have no New Year's Resolution. First time I've ever succeeded in keeping one. Xmas Wink

Somehow, I don't think that is what you meant. Xmas Grin

iLoveFoood · 28/12/2018 23:28

Last years resolution was to see more of the world.

Went to Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany, and the UK this year. Would like to have double that this time next year.

PissOffPeppa · 29/12/2018 00:18

I gave blood for the first time on 3rd January. Donated 4 times over the year and plan to keep going as long as I can.

GoJohnnyGoGoGoGo · 29/12/2018 00:21

To donate blood

EmeraldShamrock · 29/12/2018 01:11

Yes donate blood. I am O negative, every time I hear it on the TV I cringe with guilt. That is the best top of my list.

Verbena87 · 29/12/2018 08:26

thank you to you lovely blood donors. I had a post-patrol haemorrhage after the birth of my baby and was given a transfusion (I am o negative) - it was honestly like magic, I felt myself coming back to the land of the living as it went into my arm.

Verbena87 · 29/12/2018 08:26

*post partum.

TheMythicalChicken · 29/12/2018 08:28

Go Vegan (although this was 2017).

I am so much healthier and happier, I have lost weight and the kids eat a much healthier diet overall.

Best thing I ever did.

smerlin · 29/12/2018 08:38

@Verbena87 I had exactly the same as you- it is like someone recharging your batteries up to max!!

ZzzMarchhare · 29/12/2018 08:46

Send a bag to the charity shop every month. I didn’t keep up 12 months but I did 12 bags!
The charity shop also sent me a letter saying how much cash they made which was surprisingly large.
It helps de-clutter as it made me tackle the cupboards I never use as there was most stuff that needed to go. I reclaimed storage.
I’m going to do it again this year once DS starts school when I have time alone to do it.

ShotsFired · 29/12/2018 08:47

Wasn't a NY thing, but some years ago I decided to stop being the family peacemaker/go-between.

It was quite difficult when each person realised I wasn't going to relay messages, negotiate or take their side. But it worked and it lifted a weight off me.

MincePieMum · 29/12/2018 08:58

Read a book for 30 mins a day (at least). Put down your phone, cut down on Mumsnet and read anything.

My DS now doesn't tell me to put down my phone when he's talking or wanting to play with me. There is less 'addiction' there because I regularly put it down for other activities.

It's a good example to set, being seen to read books by DS.

I'm really enjoying books I want to read, but never had the time to!

MogTheSleepyCat · 29/12/2018 09:18

I set myself a '17 in '17 mini challenges with mixed success, and found it gave me a real focus, but was a bit over ambitious in places:

Run for 17 consecutive minutes
Learn to say 'I love you' in 17 languages
Find 17 church micro geocaches
Be able to identify 17 different constellations
Lose 17lbs
Save £1700
Carry out 17 random acts of kindness
17 consecutive days without looking at social media or MN
Donate 17 bags of stuff to charity shops
Drink 1.7 litres of water daily
Learn 17 new words
Have 17 family days out
Walk 17000 steps in a day
Attend church 17 times
Sell 17 items from the 'ebay pile'
