Raging toothache - please help

LEMtheoriginal · 27/12/2018 23:32

I have raging toothache. Its a broken tooth with i suspect exposed nerve. Its fine during the day and then agony of a night.

Ive had paracetamol and ibruprofen and its not helping (usually does).

What else can i do? My whole face hurts.

I know i need a dentist but im beyond terrified. Not that they will hurt me but just of them looking in my mouth which is in a terrible state from years of no dentist. Im scared they will bollick me. I also have severe anxiety anyway.

Is it a hot flannel or cold that will help?

Extreme hot or cold will hurt, warm might be ok. You definitely need to get it seen to. Don’t lie down to sleep as it’ll hurt more x

posthistoricmonsters · 27/12/2018 23:36

Oragel
It's got benzocaine in it and numbs Luke anaesthetic. It should tide you over til you can get it fixed.
It's best found OTC in pharmacies.

lazylumpylou · 27/12/2018 23:37

Agree about oragel. Think it’s only available at pharmacies though. Shame, nothing worse!

LEMtheoriginal · 27/12/2018 23:37

Oragel made it worse the other day and its only just bearable. Why does it hurt only of a night?

I have worked with different dentists for 29 years, none has ever judged on people's teeth who haven't attended and just have been pleased that they have finally came along for help.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 27/12/2018 23:38

Phone 111 and get an emergency appointment. They should ring u back in the morning with an appointment. You NEED to see a dentist. This won’t get better in its own

LEMtheoriginal · 27/12/2018 23:39

I am not registered with a dentist though.

Maybe try lying raised on pillows and not flat. The blood flow is lessened when raised. If it is higher than your heart it should throb less.

sj257 · 27/12/2018 23:40

111 will find you an emergency appointment, you don’t need to be registered

Aardvarkitsabloodyaardvark · 27/12/2018 23:40

Oragel as pp says. I really feel for you, I broke my tooth yesterday and am also terrified of dentists. However it needs sorting so a big hand hold from me. I'm at the dentist on Saturday (I'm not in pain though).

123drink · 27/12/2018 23:41

Sounds silly but if it only hurts if a night (when everywhere is closed apart from out of hours) could it be anxiety making it worse?

Not trying to belittle what your saying.

Rosebud21 · 27/12/2018 23:41

OTC co-codamol or solpadeine max - codeine & paracetamol - may help. Maximum 8 tablets a day, laxative may also be needed with codeine

Aardvarkitsabloodyaardvark · 27/12/2018 23:42

I think thats a possibility, I also suffer with anxiety and clench my teeth without realising. Could that be it Ok?

123drink · 27/12/2018 23:43

Also sorry tour dealing with that pain. It's bloody awful. Have you any strong painkillers in? If not 111 for dentist

Aardvarkitsabloodyaardvark · 27/12/2018 23:43

*op

BiscuitsAreLife · 27/12/2018 23:48

Pain is generally worse at night because we are tired and not so distracted. Try and keep your head raised as another user suggested. The blood flow goes to our head when we lie down which can make the pain worse.

LollySox · 27/12/2018 23:48

Sounds horrible op my mum had a similar problem a few months ago (dental phobia, mental health issues and also her mouth in a bad way) I took her to an emergency dentist that specialises in dental phobias. I was VERY open with them how bad her phobia was and they were lovely. This has now led to going to a specialist dentist and now she is getting treatment she needs. I hope there is something similar in your area Flowers

lazylumpylou · 27/12/2018 23:49

I also didn't go to dentist for about four years! There was no judgment, she just sorted my teeth and I wondered why I didn't go sooner! I even got a sticker! (An Elsa one!). Good luck x

Carlyrichards · 27/12/2018 23:51

LEM in the morning call a local dentist and ask for a recommendation for their most sympathetic dentist. I have been where you are and I feel for you. Keep up with the ibu and paracetamol. Good luck.

LEMtheoriginal · 27/12/2018 23:52

123drink i thought that but i genuinely dont think its that. But maybe its the lying down.

Ive pur oragel on it and at least its not worse. I am such an idiot. Im worried its not going to be treatable

I find a gentle brushing with a toothpaste for sensitive teeth followed by ibruprofen lysine rather than plain ibruprofen usually helps.

Not much use at this time of night but your pharmacist should be able to give you a lidocaine or benzocaine spray which might help.

LEMtheoriginal · 27/12/2018 23:56

I called a dentist before Christmas and they said they had a friendly dentist but my mouth is so disgusting. I will have to go private which for some reason makes me feel better. They arent going to shout at me if they are taking £££ from me are they?

OP posts:
Fluffyears · 27/12/2018 23:57

Swish with warm salt water but don’t put heat on your face it draws any infection into the facial tissues. Prop yourself up and call 111, you’ll get an emergency appointment to tide you over until you get registered with a dentist x

LEMtheoriginal · 27/12/2018 23:58

Yambabe i have taken just that and usually that is all thats needed but not tonight. I cant take anymore meds and im just not coping.

OP posts:
Mudmonster · 27/12/2018 23:58

You need to see the dentist, but if you can’t get in for a few days you can take cocodamol instead of the paracetamol, it has Codeine in it.
If it’s really bad you can take 2 co-codamol four times a day and 2 ibuprofen 3 times a day. Plus try gargling with salt water to keep the tooth clean.
