Hotel help

OMGFFS · 27/12/2018 21:15

So I have booked to stay in a hotel from the 1st to the 5th of January.

It’s a budget hotel so think helljet.

I booked this hotel because it was the only one left in the area and it’s urgent due to a death in the family ( Irish).

However, upon telling a friend she was shocked that I’d booked that place as she had just ( few weeks ago) stayed there!

Saying that;

The WiFi did not extend to her room

The room was FREEZING and they do not supply extra bedding

The door opened with another persons bloody key!

She said that she only stayed two nights so could deal with this ( safety wise she had her big husband in the room)

But I’m terrrifed! I won’t have my partner with Me, it’s the exact same hotel and it’s just shy of £150 for my five night stay.

I have gone onto the booking but I’m unable to cancel as it’s literally tomorrow.

So I was wondering if anyone knew of any ideas of how to cancel with the hotel and get a full refund or that of £100 so I can go elsewhere without losing that money at this time of year.

I’d rather go to a old family friend than stay in that hotel tbh and pocket the 100 to put towards funeral.

Is it worth staying one night? ( with one eye open) and then saying that it’s too cold, not safe and complaining till I get money back?

Literally tomorrow meaning just Tuesday coming.

Have you got time to get one of those alarmed door wedges?

Can you take a onesie and blanket?

HermioneWeasley · 27/12/2018 21:19

I’d call them, make them aware of th problems, say what you expect and see what they say

TulipsInbloom1 · 27/12/2018 21:19

I wouldnt let her experience put you off. Take a door wedge, wedge it on the inside. Take fluffy socks and possibly a hot water bottle. Use your data if the wifi doesnt work. Spend as much time as possible with your family, use it as a base.

None of those things would put me off using it. Especially for 30 quid a night.

OMGFFS · 27/12/2018 21:21

Thanks for the quick replies,

I’ve been looking on amazon for those alarmed door wedge things but I don’t think I can get it to me in time.

Onesie is a good idea!

See data is a good thing if I had any! I don’t really have a super good phone for that sort of thing so I pay a little amount and just use texts a lot of the time.

Plus wouldn’t using data for five days ring up a huge amount ?

Which hotel chain is so cheap?

Usually the doors have extra locks on the inside so it should be locked when you are inside your hotel room (and then take your valuables with you when out as would always be sensible).

Sorry for your loss.

madmum5811 · 27/12/2018 21:31

bend a fork and use that as a door wedge.

chipsnsauce · 27/12/2018 21:32

For £30 a night I don't think you can expect too much.

It could be you could end up in a room that the WiFi does reach! I would just pack warm pjs and make the most of it. Will you just be using it as a base to sleep?

Worst comes to the worst just cut your losses and stay with a relative.

What are trip advisor reviews like?

OMGFFS · 27/12/2018 21:32

I’m more so worried when I’m IN the room in case the door opens.

When I asked my friend who walked in ( maybe staff I thought) she said it was a lone man who just apologised and walked back down the hall.

It is just freaking me out and while I know a good deal is great it’s not worth me not sleeping for five nights

OMGFFS · 27/12/2018 21:33

The trip advisor reviews only go back to August! None since!!

Of course I’ll be using it to sleep lol

I'd check in and be admanat that you need a warm, quiet room with WiFi. Take your own spare blankets. Spend one night and see how you go.

MummySharkBabyShark · 27/12/2018 21:35

Have you never stayed in a hotel before?

Lazypuppy · 27/12/2018 21:35

I would never expect free wifi in basic hotel room, alwayd have to pay. Its free in the lobby

OMGFFS · 27/12/2018 21:36

MummySharkBabyShark - of course , hope that answers your question.

I have stayed in naice hotels and occasionally been given a room key which opens other rooms or someone else has let themselves into my room. As long as the person doesn't mean ill it isn't a big deal. Change in the bathroom if you're worried about being caught naked.

Hidillyho · 27/12/2018 21:41

A normal door wedge will do. Pack spare socks etc. It’s nothing that would really put me off. Google will have loads of ideas about how to stay safe in hotel rooms.
Really though, a stranger getting in is no different to a staff member being able to come in (which they can in every hotel). Just because someone has ‘authorised’ access doesn’t mean they are any safer than the random stranger who accidentally comes in

OMGFFS · 27/12/2018 21:41

“It’s not a big deal if someone has a key to your room”

Yeah a 5ft2 lone female traveller.... what could go wrong.

OP posts:
Amanduh · 27/12/2018 21:41

Wifi - fair enough. Not all hotels have free wifi.
Bedding - take extra clothes.
Door - not good, may have just been a mix up, speak to hotel before hand.

OMGFFS · 27/12/2018 21:42

Right thanks for the help guys, I’m most likely going to stay one night and ask for refund.

Happy new year

OP posts:
Dothehappydance · 27/12/2018 21:43

Take an extra jumper and lock the door from the inside.

We stopped somewhere and was given 2 rooms that were already occupied, the first luckily they were out, the next we mumbled sorry and ran away.

chipsnsauce · 27/12/2018 21:48

It's might be unlikely that you'll get a refund. They won't refund because someone told you that keys can open other doors.

You May also be able to buy a WiFi pass at reception. Travelodge do this.

MummySharkBabyShark · 27/12/2018 21:48

OMGFFS- yes it does thanks. Once again sorry for your loss.
