To wonder if middle class children appear more ‘scruffy’

Went to a Childs party today for an old school friends DD (they are incredibly middle class) and her group of mum friends (who are equally as middle class)

I admit I don’t usually socialise in many middle class circles but I couldn’t help but notice that all of the children looked... scruffy, for want of a better word.

None of them had brushed their hair, they were all in mismatched clothes with muck on their faces. Didn’t look bathed..

I feel awful saying it, but I notice this also with the MC children at the DC school, has anyone else noticed it? I’m just curious as to why this seems to be a thing? Does my dds plaits and dresses ‘out’ her as having a working class family?

Is it more of a privilege thing? We don’t have much money so am weary of being judged as lazy by not doing her hair, I also make an effort to dress her nicely so she doesn’t look like ‘the poor kid’ is it that if your middle class you don’t have that fear?

Absolutely happy to be told IABU and judgemental but I am genuinely curious on the subject.

The mic crew weren’t as funny and I thought milly prof green ex was a bun
Whereas there’s huge mileage in towie, and they are all an orangey hue

BitOfFun · 28/12/2018 01:53

I think my car is safe: it's covered in dents.

Lifecanbeabeach2 · 28/12/2018 01:54

Lifecanbeabeach2 · 28/12/2018 01:58

If something other than school uniform needs ironing it never gets worn again 😂

Racecardriver · 28/12/2018 02:02

We are firmly middle class (but a little bit on the outside due to not bring British British). Our kids wear smart clothes (tweed jackets, nice shoes, shirts, etc) but I can’t deny that they are scruffy, we let hair grow out, if clothes get dirty thought the course of the day (which they invariably do) we don’t change them, sometimes that are covered in marker pen stains.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 28/12/2018 02:02

I iron and lay out all my work clothes for the week on Sunday
All bags, accessories, clothes everything ready in advance

justwantanopinion · 28/12/2018 02:04

Is the class thing an English thing? Not sure we care too much about class in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

BitOfFun · 28/12/2018 02:06

No, it's just a "thing". Talking about it may be more of an "English thing" though.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 28/12/2018 02:10

I have lived in a number of places in uk and class is v much a thing
It’s just nuanced differently in different regions, still there though

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 28/12/2018 02:13

I have lived in Edinburgh and Glasgow.both cities class driven
it manifests in different ways in both cities mind
And of course on the west coast sectarianism is a big deal too
But don’t kind yourself on that Scotland doesn’t do,class. It most certainly does
G12 accent and affectation is well known and Kevin bridges et al regularly take the pish

IfNotNowBernard · 28/12/2018 02:15

There's a lot of daft stereotypes and preconceptions on this thread. I had tons of hand me down baby clothes, and an old telly, but I'm probs working class.

I do notice that wealthier families tend to have longer haired boys, but the clothes aren't scruffy, they are very good quality, like Geox shoes instead of Nikes, proper snowboarding jackets instead of Asda coats.
Ds looks nice with longer hair but he insists on short back and sides. Clothes are hoodies, joggers and fresh crepes Wink
I am fairly keen on cleanliness tbf. I once lived in an area where a lot of people were teachers and academics, and remember being really disgusted how many parents let their little kids have crusty snot all over their faces..I mean whyyy??

scotmum1977 · 28/12/2018 02:21

@justwantanopinion you're right it's not as big a deal in Scotland. I've worked in London, Newcastle, Manchester and Birmingham and lived all over however working/living short term doesn't give you enough info to make an informed decision as to if the class system exists or how important it is. I think you really have to be there long term to understand.

Expatworkingmum · 28/12/2018 02:23

I grew up working class but probably considered MC now. My daughter perpetually looks like an extra from Oliver Twist and we honestly don’t buy any clothes for her that aren’t from a supermarket (she only spills everything down herself). Nothing to do with my class as far as I know, I just never give it much thought.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 28/12/2018 02:26

Scotland does class,in a nuanced Scottish way with a dash of sectarianism chucked in for good measure
Private school uptake Edinburgh @25% it’s not such a mc uproar if you do
Private school uptake weeg considerably less and highly contentious if you do

scotmum1977 · 28/12/2018 02:40

@LipstickHandbagCoffee interested to understand how sectarianism impacts the class system in Scotland? I would have thought they were separate issues?

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 28/12/2018 02:50

Class and religion Intertwined in particular in west coast, class adds a different presentation to sectarianism but it’s there.
Whit school did ye go to covers both religion and class
Institutionally, legal system and police were believed to be Protestant with anticatholic bias. Hindering career progression etc
And of course religion in the islands is a biggie.

Herald covered sectarianism, anti catholic bias this year

wishywashy6 · 28/12/2018 03:40

No idea what classes as middle class but my kids are pretty feral 🤷🏼‍♀️
We're a very outdoor family and mud's just too much fun to avoid! 😬!

They bath/ shower regularly but they always have mad hair and somehow end up filthy again after.

I've never understood how anyone keeps children clean and tidy!
