To find it odd when people use a wedding wedding photo as profile photo?

In more detail ...
AIBU to find it odd when people use their wedding photo as their social media profile photo? Full wedding attire, so obvious it's such a photo.

  1. For FaceBook, Twitter and other informal social media, I don't find it odd in the first few months, or maybe a year, after the wedding. I do find it odd 5 to 10 years later.
  2. For LinkedIn and other work related social media, I find it odd even when the wedding was very recent.

True, it's causing me zero harm and maybe giving the profile owners much pleasure. My reaction leads me to question my character / niceness / generosity of spirit etc.

I'm interested in:

  • whether (and why) other people find it odd, or find it normal
  • whether my mild 'I find it odd' reaction is unreasonable.

No, I'm not planning on asking my friends who have such profile photos.

I just use my ugliest unhappiest photo. We will have none of that happy rubbish on my page.

Pippa12 · 27/12/2018 15:08

Probably because they feel they look their best on that pic. Majority have slimmed down, had professionals do their make up and hair and paid a small fortune for outfits etc... I'd say it's fairly obvious why.

😂😂😂

OutragedERIC · 27/12/2018 15:10

A photo of them taken on what could be one of the happiest days of their lives?!

Freaks.

StrongerThanIThought76 · 27/12/2018 15:10

My DP's ex used her wedding photo for her profile pic 8 years after they were divorced!

Billballbaggins · 27/12/2018 15:11

I don’t think it’s weird, it’s a photo from a day when most people look and feel at their happiest and most beautiful. I think it’s cute. I had a photo from my wedding as my profile pic for 18months before I changed it. My hair looked amazing, my makeup was stunning and I look so unbelievably happy in the picture. So maybe I’ll use it again in the future I don’t know.

PristineCondition · 27/12/2018 15:11

It’s a day they felt amazing and happy
What do you want daily shit pics with stained clothes and dirty hair for realism?

ibblebibbledibble · 27/12/2018 15:11

I find it odd that you find it odd.

AloneLonelyLoner · 27/12/2018 15:12

My sister uses hers, 4 years on and honestly I do find it a bit odd. She does look very beautiful though and it does make sense. I’m just cynical about marriage and assume it’ll all end in tears (I’ve been married for 20 years so you can tell that it’s a pretty severe form of cynicism).

TurnipCake · 27/12/2018 15:12

It's worse when they use them on dating websites

SarahET · 27/12/2018 15:12

I think it's a bit strange in LinkedIn too, but better then photos obviously taken in a bar toilet (which I've also seen).

SleepingStandingUp · 27/12/2018 15:13

I agree Re LinkedIn etc, you wouldn't use it on your work badge so don't use it on a work linked profile

FB and the rest, well it's because it's a nice photo, so yeah, yabu

ForAMinuteThere · 27/12/2018 15:13

Both Facebook and linked in for me are. They're nice photos. You haven't really said what your issue is with it?

HolesinTheSoles · 27/12/2018 15:14

YANBU about linkedn who on earth puts a wedding photo on something work related? The other ones I don't think matters, using a very old wedding photo is just the same as someone using a childhood photo - a cute memory they want to bring back.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 27/12/2018 15:16

I also find it odd you find it odd.

It’s probably the one time they have a beautiful picture on the day they’ve been professionally made up (women certainly) and likely one of the happiest times of their life? And not as intimate as a post birth picture.

NewPapaGuinea · 27/12/2018 15:18

Perhaps they just can’t be bothered changing it. My whatsapp pic is a wedding one and I’ve been married over 5 years. Just not bothered enough to change it.

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 27/12/2018 15:21

Wow. This place is so strange. I've read so much bollocks on here these past few days but this might be the post that tips me over the edge to deactivate my account.
People are odd.

Happy, beautiful pictures on profile pictures...who'd have thought it?? Whatever next ..

JingleJangle951 · 27/12/2018 15:21

Thank you everyone, I'm finding the comments useful and interesting - it's nice to read different views.

I find it odd too. It seems they either want everyone to know they are married rather than having their own identity,

CookPassBabtridge · 27/12/2018 15:22

So why do you find it odd on facebook etc?

Darkstar4855 · 27/12/2018 15:23

I don’t find it odd. A wedding is generally a happy, momentous occasion. Why shouldn’t people use the photo several years on? It’s a nice reminder.

Unobtainable · 27/12/2018 15:24

I change all mine every year so theyre current and dont look dated. I also have professional photos taken for LinkedIn and our business website. Others are just puctures others have taken where i look nice/acceptble.

Im shocked at how many women use duck-face pouty / cleavage-flashing / filtered pictures on LinkedIn though. Fine on FB if you like that look but a bit off on LinkedIn for someone in a professional role (fine if youre in beauty/entertainment etc..)

TheFirstOHN · 27/12/2018 15:24

I sometimes temporarily use one of our wedding photos as my profile photo on our wedding anniversary. Just for the day.

TwllBach · 27/12/2018 15:24

I remember reading this exact same thread a year or so ago

FrowningFlamingo · 27/12/2018 15:27

I changed mine to one of my wedding just afterwards and haven’t changed it in 5 years, I just don’t care enough about my social media profile to bother, there’s no other reason for it for me.
