DS is 3.5, and has a virus. Every question of what food he might like is met with ‘nothing’. He’s drinking ok, so doctors not concerned, but he has a history of repeat and long-term infections since birth and loses weight really easily. We’ve just got to a point where he’s hit 50th centipede for the first time since his birth and I’m really keen for him not to get out of the habit of eating. So, any brilliant suggestions for tempting food? He’s had a Barney Bear today, and a few blueberries. That’s it. It’s doesn’t have to be healthy, just calories will do at this point.

Buttery crumpets and some soup? Sometimes if you're ill you don't want anything but when you see/smell something nice you can't resist. Hope he feels better soon.

HomeMadeMadness · 26/12/2018 15:45

Sorry did have a giggle at centipede!

Does he have a sore throat or funny tummy? How about a smoothie? Milkshake? Ice cream? Mashed potato?

If he has a delicate tummy the BRAT diet might help? Could you do rice pudding with some apple sauce?

Sirzy · 26/12/2018 15:47

I know it’s hard but I wouldn’t push the food at all. Have things available and offer favourites but try not to worry too much.
If he is ill he will eat when he is ready. You can always try drinks like milkshakes in the meantime

Hope he feels better soon.

Ollivander84 · 26/12/2018 15:49

Things that I want when I'm ill

Ice cream
Custard
Rice pudding
Chocolate sponge/apple crumble with custard
Tomato soup
Dippy eggs
McDonald's milkshake/happy meal
Toast and marmite

HairyDogsFeet · 26/12/2018 15:50

Mars milkshake

Ollivander84 · 26/12/2018 15:50

Oh a hot milk drink - hot milk, Horlicks, peanut butter, banana, honey and porridge oats blended. Really good
Hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows?

Lyricallie · 26/12/2018 15:52

My mum always gave us boiled rice as it wasn’t too adventurous on our tummies and meant we ate something.

Cherry321 · 26/12/2018 15:54

Mashed potato with cheese in?

Rice pudding?

Custard?

QuilliamCakespeare · 26/12/2018 16:00

I'm doing baked potatoes with lots of butter and a few different toppings; tuna, cheese and beans. It's my go to when the kids are being picky/

Lindtnotlint · 26/12/2018 16:01

Ice cream.

AdaColeman · 26/12/2018 16:03

All poorly children love egg-in-a-cup, it has well known medicinal and restorative properties.
It's a soft boiled egg, scooped into a favourite/pretty cup and chopped up, add a knob of butter if it is a little overcooked.
Eat with a teaspoon and serve with triangles of soft white buttered bread and plenty of love.

Any left over buttered bread should be turned into Fairy or Elf bread with a scattering of hundreds and thousands.

Sleepinghooty · 26/12/2018 16:04

My days is similar. When he’s ill he likes smoothies - lots of Greek yoghurt, a banana and a handful of berries. It’s a good way to get some calories in without really eating

JontyDoggle37 · 26/12/2018 16:44

Thank you all for the ideas. Realised I had some cold custards in the fridge, he’s currently tucking into that. He doesn’t like eggs or cheese (how can he be my child?!??) which limits some options, but have remembered I’ve also got some ice cream left and I’ve got strawberry milkshake powder, so think i’ll Go with that for tonight.

Ahhhh, @AdaColeman my Mum still makes that for me when I'm sick!

Gotstuckwiththisname · 26/12/2018 20:07

When my DC are ill, they tend to eat:

Toast
Scrambled egg
Yoghurt
Baked potatoes and butter
Nesquick or similar

ThistleAmore · 26/12/2018 20:10

Please don't do rice pudding.

My GM once gave me some of her delicious, home-made rice pudding possibly a little too soon after a particularly nasty bout of gastroenteritis, which I very quickly vomited back up in a spectacular display, and I haven't been able to touch the stuff since.

This makes me sad, because I like the idea: I literally just can't stomach it and I suffer badly from Rice Pudding Envy. Sad

See also: dark chocolate about an hour before the commencement of a really AWFUL bout of food poisoning caused by shellfish (weirdly, although I am now vegetarian and don't eat shellfish any more, it didn't dent my appetite for it at all). Food association/triggering is a very real and sad thing.

I tend to err on the plain toast side of things after being ill.

Leeds2 · 26/12/2018 20:30

If you can get to McDonald's, their milk shakes are very calorific!

Jelly, maybe.

Boiled egg and toast soldiers.

AdaColeman · 26/12/2018 20:31

QuilliamCakespeare She sounds like a lovely Mum, and sure you always feel better after you've eaten it! Brew

Jezzifishie · 26/12/2018 20:36

ThistleAmore my husband has this with doughnuts! Especially the ones with icing on - he had one just before the onset of a nasty stomach bug and hasn't been able to touch one since!

CrazyOldBagLady · 26/12/2018 20:38

You could blend some fruit and yoghurt together for a burst of vitamins. Maybe sneak some avocado in for some healthy fats.

Would he be tempted by a pancake with some Nutella or good old fashioned sugar and lemon?

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 26/12/2018 20:46

When my dd was a toddler and unwell I found it easier just to do little bits of food and leave it beside her.
Frube, breadsticks, plain pasta, dry crackers, dry cherios and an ice pop or jelly.
I actually used to do a " sick run" to tesco to buy in the food and get a bottle of mi wadi too
Hope he feels better soon

AlecOrAlonzo · 26/12/2018 20:52

Jelly. My kids love that when they're recovering.

And on any day of the week actually!

Starlight456 · 26/12/2018 20:57

My Ds ‘ s go too food at that age was rice pudding

bobstersmum · 26/12/2018 20:58

He sounds very similar to my ds who's nearly 6. I've just plotted his weight today and he's dropped to 50th too. He's like a skeleton his arms are so thin
He has problems with his tonsils and I believe when they're out it will improve.
In the meantime, I let him eat whatever he fancies. Eggs are good to put weight on, try a boiled egg or two mashed up in a cup with butter and salt. It's divine! Swap milk for whole or even extra creamy. Real butter instead of spread. The little rolo desserts are very high calorie. My ds is very fussy eater anyway so it's difficult for me, but you can add some cream or extra butter to mash.
Sometimes my ds doesn't fancy eating but he'll have some cereal.
