To never cook a big meat for Christmas ever again?

Another year of Norfolk Bronze turkey.
Just tastes of turkey (moist but dull).

So have decided that from now on I'm only going to do a Christmas dinner of sides!
Goose fat potatoes, pigs in blankets, stuffing balls, red cabbage, sprouts, carrots, yorkies and shed loads of gravy.

No carcasses fucking me off and probably no leftovers.

AIBU?

What do your fellow diners think of that idea?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 25/12/2018 21:07

We haven't had turkey for the last 13 years, goose, ham and beef are the meats of choice in our family.

Coolaschmoola · 25/12/2018 21:07

This is why I do a bonekess turkey crown. Just the breast, just enough leftovers for sandwiches, no carcass.

adaline · 25/12/2018 21:07

Turkey is really bland, I don't understand why it's so popular tbh.

Why not do something with more flavour? Beef? Pork? Chicken? Goose? Duck? All smaller than turkey but with much more flavour!

MadisonMontgomery · 25/12/2018 21:09

I’ve never cooked Christmas dinner so this might be a daft suggestion, but could you not buy a chicken breast or something per person and bung it in the oven? Sounds much easier than faffing with a giant turkey.

DangerousBeanz · 25/12/2018 21:09

No turkey here but a nice big free range chicken, with bags of flavour.
I agree turkey is a shite meat it's really bland and often dry.

TheMincePiesAreMine · 25/12/2018 21:09

YABU. We have a big joint of beef or lamb. Can't afford it any other time of year but feels much more of a treat than turkey for us.

SoyDora · 25/12/2018 21:12

We had fillet of beef, it was gorgeous.

richierichardsaunt · 25/12/2018 21:12

I don't think the other diners would care!
I'm quite a good cook and often vary between turkey, goose beef etc.
Every year meat is always leftover but all sides are gone.

It's just wasteful.

LuggsaysNotaWomen · 25/12/2018 21:13

Never do turkey, it's horrible. Chicken or a lamb joint are much tastier.

SoyDora · 25/12/2018 21:13

If the other diners have an issue with it they could always cook their own dinner!

boatyardblues · 25/12/2018 21:15

We had a posh stuffed turkey crown and posh stuffed boned duck. Both were lush. Can’t be doing with a whoe turkey these days.

richierichardsaunt · 25/12/2018 21:17

I have suggested it to my household and they agree.
Next year I'll just say "if you want turkey, beef etc, bring it cooked!"

trinity0097 · 25/12/2018 21:18

I get a deboned Turkey. Dead easy and you can eat it all!

Squatternutbosh123 · 25/12/2018 21:19

Wasteful? You don't have to throw the leftovers....sandwiches, curry, soups, stir fries etc. We've got tonnes of leftover Turkey and beef and none of it will be wasted

MissWilmottsGhost · 25/12/2018 21:20

Is it wasteful though? Doesn't anyone eat the leftovers?

DH and I purposely cooked too much today so we can enjoy cold meat with bubble and squeak tomorrow, and the carcass had already been picked and made into stock for soup.

Do you just throw your leftovers in the bin? Shock

purplecorkheart · 25/12/2018 21:21

We had fillet of beef. Lovely, easy to cook and carve. A small bit leftover tomorrow.

SoyDora · 25/12/2018 21:21

We don’t tend to have leftovers as we don’t buy a joint of meat that’s too big for us to eat!

MissWilmottsGhost · 25/12/2018 21:22

has not had

celtiethree · 25/12/2018 21:22

I’m giving up on turkey as well. Bought from the butchers it cost a fortune! Ham and all the trimmings were eaten rather than the turkey. No more than a small crown next year.

goldengummybear · 25/12/2018 21:22

I'm coming to the same conclusion. My kids would happily eat a roast where the "meat" was stuffing and pigs in blankets.

Silkie2 · 25/12/2018 21:23

I love turkey and the cold leftovers are even better... then there's the delicious stock for soup.
I wouldn't want it every week but a couple of times a year it's great.

PumpkinPie2016 · 25/12/2018 21:27

We don't have turkey - tried it once and it was too dry for me. Plus, there was a lot left and there is only so much turkey one can eat!

Today, I did a piece of beef and a piece of pork - both from my usual butcher who is excellent.

Both were lovely and tasty. I had 11 for dinner (1 child) so ordered both pieces to feed 8. All of it was eaten and absolutely no waste at all.

Serialweightwatcher · 25/12/2018 21:29

I absolutely love turkey and want it to last 3 days for sandwiches with stuffing and cranberry and mayo, but it may just last one more. I always buy a crown now as it only takes approx 3 hours to cook and is easy to carve - if you don't cook it too long it is lovely and soft and tasty with onion gravy yum

ChairinSage · 25/12/2018 21:30

We haven't cooked turkey for exactly that reason. This year we had chicken breasts wrapped in bacon, last year it was a beef joint. No complaints from other diners, they are all grateful that someone else has shopped, prepped and cooked a lovely meal.
The leftover veg, potatoes and stuffing will get eaten as bubble and squeak with sausages tomorrow - my dad is coming again tomorrow as that's his favourite meal in the world!
