To never cook a big meat for Christmas ever again?

Another year of Norfolk Bronze turkey.
Just tastes of turkey (moist but dull).

So have decided that from now on I'm only going to do a Christmas dinner of sides!
Goose fat potatoes, pigs in blankets, stuffing balls, red cabbage, sprouts, carrots, yorkies and shed loads of gravy.

No carcasses fucking me off and probably no leftovers.

AIBU?

We made a massive turkey and I’m so happy with all our leftovers! I love turkey so am happy with turkey based meals for the next week!

Summerisdone · 26/12/2018 09:42

We don't bother with the turkey, depends on how many are eating the Xmas dinner but we get gammon or beef or both... don't really see the point in getting a huge turkey that none of us really enjoy and is usually overpriced just because it's Christmas 🤷🏻‍♀️

As Warcat says - Are you sure you're cooking it right? I think turkey is delicious and anything but bland when done right

I've never cooked a dry turkey and it's so delicious, even my mega fussy DS loves it - turkey should never be dry if cooked properly

I cooked an enormous goose. It tasted lovely when it was done but I was so fucking stressed by the end of it and it took 90 minutes longer than anticipated.

I'd been medicating the stress with prosecco and was edging toward pissed by the time dinner was on the table.

Maybe cook the same amount of side dishes but don't put it all out and don't refill the serving dishes. Once it's gone, it's gone and you've got some saved for nibbles with drinks later.

I don’t understand all these people complaining about dry turkey! Cook it properly, then!

I love a good Christmas dinner, but I woukd feel that it isn’t a proper one without a couple of slices of turkey. We haven’t hosted for a couple of years but while it’s nice being cooked for, the worst thing is not having any leftover turkey for sandwiches, curry and soup!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/12/2018 14:44

I’m not seeing the issue, Op! Leftover meat is a gift, so much you can do with it. I’d much rather have that leftover than veg. Not a fan of reheated veg.

ScreamingBadSanta · 26/12/2018 14:45

it took 90 minutes longer than anticipated.

Did you stuff it? I've found stuffing a goose has a disproportionate effect on cooking time (by comparison with a chicken or turkey) because it has a very large cavity.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/12/2018 14:46

Turkey and ham pie too.....

BabySharkAteMyHamster · 26/12/2018 14:48

I lifted the skin on my turkey and made slits on the breast which I stuffed with bacon fat. Then made a mixture of chopped, smoked, streaky bacon and butter. This was liberally rubbed under the skin. The top was covered in more butter and streaky bacon. Itbwas absolutely stunning and has already been stripped down to make turkey and cheese.pies.
