To think this job spec is asking the world for very little money?

naughtybutniceandaspice · 24/12/2018 21:49

I can't quite believe it.

NHS, I know. But even still. I'm shocked. £20-23k to do all of this?

What do you think?

AIBU?

I have been working in private sector and would get paid over £30k (outside of London), for that.

It’s very poor pay, but that’s becuase wages in the UK are appalling, stagnatingly low and have been for decades. And judging by the comments threads like this get from educated and informed women, there seems to be no appetite to improve things.

BackforGood · 24/12/2018 22:09

Extensive diary management isn't basic admin

Can you explain what is difficult, or needs extensive (as in years of) training, to be able to manage diaries ? Confused
Most of us manage that task without years of intensive training.

A general admin role like that wouldn't be paid anywhere near £20K in my world (public sector).

Read ChristmasKnicker's post for a reality check.

MammaSchwifty · 24/12/2018 22:10

Nope, nothing especially taxing about that job description, low responsibility, directed admin tasks, I think that pay looks fair.

treaclesoda · 24/12/2018 22:11

Where I live that would be a really high salary for that job description.

Hmmmbiscuits · 24/12/2018 22:11

All jobs are low paid at the moment. So you aren't being unreasonable.

Eilaianne · 24/12/2018 22:13

What on earth is especially Taxing about diary management for even a fairly junior PA who's been in a similar role for 1-2 years?

It's not a role where you're producing a product or accountable for top budgets or stressful out of hours... 30k is well paid for a bog standard admin role which requires a wee bit of experience..

OP do you know what nurses and junior Drs are on?!

lastqueenofscotland · 24/12/2018 22:14

I live in Manchester and you would not be getting 30k for that. You’d be lucky to be getting more than high teens

divadee · 24/12/2018 22:15

All the people here belittling "basic admin" try running your business without it and see how far you get.

That job role is above "basic admin in my opinion. And I recruit.

dorsetdollymixture · 24/12/2018 22:16

What band is it, OP?

naughtybutniceandaspice · 24/12/2018 22:18

Yes I'm aware what nurses and junior doctors are on. Again, this isn't about them as it is very well known how astonishingly under paid they are.

The point of this thread was to see if anyone else thought this particular role is under paid.
Apparently not.

It's interesting because a few months back someone was on the employment section and everyone was screaming and encouraging her to go for a private sector role, because her PA job for the NHS would be worth at least £30k+.

Another thread not long after where a 21 year old said she was happy to be on £30k. I wasn't too surprised when she mentioned her job title since PA work is often really well paid, in my experience. Most replies were bringing her down and insisting £30k was alright but not great money Confused

diva You're right

dors It's band 4!

BarbaraofSevillle · 24/12/2018 22:19

Private sector PA seems weirdly well paid compared with other admin roles or public sector PA. is there a reason for this? Long hours, etc?

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 24/12/2018 22:20

I was a PA on that sort of salary before I had DD who is now 20 years old. Private sector though.

Personally I think it sounds underpaid but then I think most people in the NHS are underpaid.....

ilovesooty · 24/12/2018 22:21

You wouldn't get more than 18K for that in my company. There are skilled recovery coordinators dealing with complex drug and alcohol and mental health interventions on less money than that.

MammaSchwifty · 24/12/2018 22:21

@HoldMeCloserTonyDanza

That's true and you're right, but everything is relative, and that job is not a skilled position so on the spectrum of wages, it should be on the lower end.

treaclesoda · 24/12/2018 22:22

I'm not belittling admin, or anyone who does it. I think salaries are pitifully low for a lot of jobs. But I live in an area with very low salaries in general, even for professional level jobs. So for me that's a fantastic salary for that job description.

Didyeeaye · 24/12/2018 22:22

YABU
I'm degree qualified, work in social work with alot of emotional distress, personal responsibility and administration required to manage my own caseload of 25-30 vulnerable young people and constant reports and government targets... I only earn 28k...
If 30k if too low for a PA then I am definitely in the wrong job!

abacucat · 24/12/2018 22:22

Wages in lots of roles have fallen. I see posts for this amount that ask for a lot of skills and responsibility.

Ploppymoodypants · 24/12/2018 22:23

This is band 5 agenda for change NHS pay scale. There is a complex formula that grades the jobs. They will probably have a band 3 under them to manage. But to be honest where I am in the country its well paid. And although not basic admin, remember it is probably a generic job description and it’s unlikely the person will do all the things listed.

Travisandthemonkey · 24/12/2018 22:24

Just shows how little people think of pa’s
Just a big of admin, answering the phones

People have no idea

Violetroselily · 24/12/2018 22:24

What is diary management, if not basic admin...?

Travisandthemonkey · 24/12/2018 22:24

@Didyeeaye
That’s a dick head thing to say.

reallyanotherone · 24/12/2018 22:25

Not belittling admin.

But salaries are relative. An admin/pa position is not going to pay more than a junior dr or graduate scientist. As pp said junior dr’s start on 27k, a grad scientist would start on about 20-25k.

Public sector pay is standardised along pay scales. The pay will reflect level of responsibility, prior experience and qualifications needed.

I know senior psychiatric nurses with years of experience and massive responsibility who are only band 6. band 6 is 25-35k, and would be senior level.

A newly qualified nurse would be band 3/4, between 16-22k.

Perspective.

Travisandthemonkey · 24/12/2018 22:26

Being a decent PA is a highly skilled job that not many people can do. You have to have a certain skill set. It’s not easy at all. I would say it’s a very skilled job.
But you know, because it’s a women’s work kind of job then it’s easy apparently

wibble1st · 24/12/2018 22:26

This is normal for public sector jobs, the private sector earn a lot more for doing the same job. Although the NHS get slightly more than us in government jobs. The publics perception of government pay is usually based on London civil servants i.e. they see M.Ps workers getting exorbitant pay and think that all public sector jobs pay the same.
