I messed up i think. Bought this gammon joint from sainsbo instead of our usual from the butchers.

It says its "formed from selected cuts of pork" it does have netting. My worry is if i boil it (in coke) its going to fall to bits.

Quick - what do i do?

Mnet i need you - can i boil this gammon joint?

Cooking instructions only suggest oven cooking but it might be salty

Did you soak it yet? I didn't overnight soak my gammon yesterday ( just soaked it for an hour and a half, with frequent water changes) and it was completely inedible

earlgreymarl · 24/12/2018 19:26

Can you soak it overnight and then boil it in coke with netting, take netting off then glaze / roast to finish?

PickAChew · 24/12/2018 19:27

It's fine. Just keep it in its netting when you boil it. The timings are fairly similar though you can get away better with boiling for too long.

LEMtheoriginal · 24/12/2018 19:28

No not soaked it . Was i supposed to?

Boil it first with the net on and then take the net off to roast it to finish it off

UhUhUhDennis · 24/12/2018 19:28

Straight boil it crack on. No need to soak etc if you're doing it in coke. I shove mine in the slow cooker no faffing about, dash of coke turns out beautiful at the end and not salty. I roast it for 20 mins before resting then serving after slow cooking overnight. Enjoy!

Munchyseeds · 24/12/2018 19:29

Cook it with the netting on, remove then glaze
Don't think it will need soaking??

PickAChew · 24/12/2018 19:30

And if you have no time to soak, bring to the boil, pour the water into a bowl (so you can skim it) then cook in fresh water.

It's onlt traditionally cured gammon that need a really good soak. That one will have been infused with the curing solution so won't soak up any water.

fourcorneredcircle · 24/12/2018 19:32

I did the same Sainsbury’s joint last night in ginger beer. Keep in netting to boil, remove netting (and fat, if you’re like me) before glazing then roasting.

SassitudeandSparkle · 24/12/2018 19:33

I boil joints like that (also in coke, love Nigella's recipe for that) but I take the netting off - it does mean that it will be a bit mis-shapen rather than a neat round, but the choice is yours.

Oldraver · 24/12/2018 19:41

Finishing it off int he oven with Maple syrup on the skin is lovely

LEMtheoriginal · 24/12/2018 19:59

So it wont fall tp bits? I have to cut a bit off

blueskiespls · 24/12/2018 19:59

@LEMtheoriginal don't suppose you have a slow cooker?

scaryteacher · 24/12/2018 20:03

I've roasted mine in foil, and the pair of them are now in the oven with a clove, mustard and sugar glaze. I did buy smoked ones, and was very cross that Sainsbury had no decent size British gammon or hams in last week.

WitsEnding · 24/12/2018 20:09

I also cooked the same joint last night, boiled (with various flavourings) then net off, skin off, glazed and roasted for 40 minutes - it was fine. I would have preferred a non-preformed joint, but there were none to be had.

feellikeanalien · 24/12/2018 20:15

Wow! I've never heard of boiling a gammon joint in coke.
It sounds disgusting but I am prepared to be told otherwise.

XiCi · 24/12/2018 20:20

I have that exact same joint from sainsburys. There are also boil instructions under the roasting ones. 1hr 20 mins

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 24/12/2018 20:22

If you have one, bung it in the slow cooker with a bag of brown sugar. Leave it for as long as possible, it will be luscious, and you can keep the sugar syrup in the slow cooker and candy any leftover veg or meat for boxing day.

MaisyMary77 · 24/12/2018 20:28

Gammon in coke is amazing. Nom nom nom. (I don’t actually like coke!!) I’ve a lovely recipe card from sainsbo’s, I often do it-delicious! I boil it in coke for around an hour then finish in the oven with maple syrup and cloves.

Oblomov18 · 24/12/2018 20:37

Alien, gammon in coke has been world famous for donkeys years.

Katkincake · 24/12/2018 20:48

Glad I read this thread as we have exactly the same ham for boxing day. It's also a perfect use of a bottle of cheap coke someone bought with them to our party the other month! Enjoy

Hubblebubbletripletrouble · 24/12/2018 20:53

No it won’t fall apart! Smile

5foot5 · 24/12/2018 20:54

I don't think you need to soak them these days

marmitedoughnut · 24/12/2018 20:54

We have that one too - no boiling instructions on the label.
Google suggests 20/25 mins per 500g
