We have my husband's family due to come over for full whack Christmas dinner tomorrow - hubby came down with d & v, presume norovirus, in the night - DISASTER! I know that realistically I'm going to get it too, should we just cancel now? We have a fridge full of food, booze, the whole lot, I'm so upset ☹️

OP posts:
strawberrypenguin · 24/12/2018 07:10

Yep you have to cancel, sorry.

Patchworksack · 24/12/2018 07:11

You reminded me of the year my SIL came to the family Christmas with norovirus and gave it to everyone else. I had an 8 week old baby. It was hideous. Please cancel or postpone. I hope the rest of you escape the lurgi.

Threehoursfromhome · 24/12/2018 07:12

I would cancel. It's very infectious. The two times I had it was after I went to visit people who assured me that it had been days ago and that they had disinfected the house since.

NerrSnerr · 24/12/2018 07:13

I agree that you need to cancel. You don't want to pass it on and you don't want to be hosting when you're feeling rubbish if you get it.

So they live close enough for you to deliver some of the food to them?

anniehm · 24/12/2018 07:14

Unless it could be food poisoning (in which case assuming he's normally healthy it lasts about 12-24 hours in my experience) cancel ASAP do they can go shopping, or if they are local could they buy off you/ you give them some if your food. At least give them options. It's possible that you won't get it and it doesn't last long in a fit adult so if they are willing to risk it, you might get away with it.

I've had it dh didn't get it and vice versa over the years, it depends a bit on circumstances - the only time we both got sick we had been sharing a water bottle all day.

Disfordarkchocolate · 24/12/2018 07:17

When I had this it was so bad I sent the family away so they didn't catch it. It will be hard enough to stop the rest of the people in the house catching it without adding more people so I think you should cancel. Take care.

OrgyofSausages · 24/12/2018 07:18

Oh dear OP sorry but you will have to cancel Sad. At least that way people can make last minute rearrangements. Put all your lovely food in the freezer.

BifsWif · 24/12/2018 07:18

You need to cancel. Can you give a family member the food so they can host?

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 24/12/2018 07:18

I’d ask them. I wouldn’t cancel without asking! And Give the food to someone else to host

Hope the rest of you escape it.

Lifeofsmiley · 24/12/2018 07:20

Can you go to theirs and take the food with you. Leave your dh to recover on his own

chocatoo · 24/12/2018 07:20

Postpone, not cancel. Hopefully people will be available to put xmas back by a week.

Ethel36 · 24/12/2018 07:23

Why are some posters suggesting that you hand over your Christmas food? The poster and presumably her children still want Christmas dinner?!

IWouldLikeToKnow · 24/12/2018 07:23

Yep, I agree to either handing the food over to someone else, or you hosting in someone else's house. It would be a bit rubbish to have to go doing an entire food shop and prep today

Lifeofsmiley · 24/12/2018 07:25

ethel the op hasn’t mentioned children. It could just be her an dh, which is why I suggested she should go too

Wonkysack · 24/12/2018 07:27

I'd continue as normal and warn them today.
I think for most healthy people hiding away from bugs doesn't do them any favours, it's like trying to keep kids away from chicken pox. These kinds of things are inevitable.
Wouldn't bother me.

Loopytiles · 24/12/2018 07:28

It’s not a given that you will get it.

Who is visiting you?

Loopytiles · 24/12/2018 07:28

If healthy adults I would be inclined to give guests the information and let them decide.

blackcat86 · 24/12/2018 07:29

Cancel today so that people have time to make other arrangements. Don't hand over the food as having someone over to the house risks them catching it and then spreading it themselves. Also you and the DCs will need to eat to. I would offer to host a get together in the new year when you're all feeling better. It's disappointing but better than everyone getting ill.

I have a young baby and elderly relatives, and would be absolutely livid if I came to someone's house who wasn't 48hrs clear of d&v.

sakura06 · 24/12/2018 07:30

Definitely cancel! It is so contagious.

vicviking · 24/12/2018 07:31

Cancel. Tell them now so they can buy food. Noro is highly contagious and awful to experience. They won't thank you for it.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 24/12/2018 07:31

Oh no!!!!! I would simply inform them of the situation and leave it to them to decide...

WerewolfNumber1 · 24/12/2018 07:31

@Wonkysack - have you actually had norovirus? It’s highly contagious and it’s very very nasty. We all just had it. Literally stuff coming out both ends, violently, for two days. A week on and I still feel shaky and can’t eat anything rich. It’s not just another bug. And for young children or anybody with underlying medical conditions it’s very dangerous.

AnnaMariaDreams · 24/12/2018 07:31

You have to cancel really, no one wants norovirus.
Only other alternative is if DH can quarantine himself (spare bedroom/ bathroom?) and you carry on regardless without him. Not much fun for you though if it’s his family.

Troels · 24/12/2018 07:31

For us, Dh would be confined to our room, with our own bathroom.
Then clean the house, dettol spray all the door knobs and light switches, disinfect everywhere and carry on. It's happened to us over Christmas, we did this, and no one else got it. But we had to make sure no one went in an out of the sick persons room without lots of hand washing.
Set him up with a TV and some films when he's up for it.

Rememory · 24/12/2018 07:31

Why do you think it's Noro and not just a bad tummy upset? I guess you're better safe than sorry but has it been doing the rounds near you?
