To ask if you've ordered party food/canapés from a supermarket, and who was best?

Having a gathering. Thinking about ordering canapés from either Waitrose or M&S. They both have a fair bit of choice if you go via their entertaining section online.

Anyone have experience of either? Or other experiences?

I used both waitrose and marks when I had a party over the summer, both nice. Apparently the smoked salmon from Waitrose was good but I was too busy hosting so didn't get any.

Whereisthecoffee · 23/12/2018 08:51

I’ve got Mac and cheese bites, mozzerella sticks , duck spring rolls and some other various bits from Asda and Iceland I think I’m not quite classy enough for this post Grin

EmUntitled · 23/12/2018 08:52

I also buy mine from aldi or iceland. Genuine question, is there a big advantage of ordering them rather than just buying and cooking yourself?

Nojobistoobig · 23/12/2018 09:45

I’ve tried a few from M&S this year and liked everything I bought. There’s a bigger selection in the shop than there is online but they are in smaller quantities so it depends on how many you are catering for.

LagunaBubbles · 23/12/2018 09:46

Got most of mine from Tesco as they have 3 for 2 on just now.

LeftHook · 23/12/2018 09:50

Waitrose and M&S are tastier than Asda, Tesco, Lidl and Iceland.

Fanjita1 · 23/12/2018 10:01

M & S mainly. The food is lovely but it is stupidly over priced. Ive got some bits from Aldi this year too though. Half the price of Marksies. The chorizo mini burgers are divine!

Hormonecure · 23/12/2018 11:44

Just to say, I ALWAYS shop in Lidl and Aldi. I'm by no means posh when it comes to usual food stuff. But I don't want to do any of the entertaining for this gathering, DH is totally behind this, and Watrose/M&S online entertaining platters look good.

M&S as always make great tasting stuff. Sainsbury's is also half decent. Picked up a couple of bits from Aldi but not tried them yet.

treacledan71 · 23/12/2018 14:27

Morrisons do some nice things. They have a catalogue by their customer services

BlueJava · 23/12/2018 14:29

M&S - we went out 2 nights ago and everything was M&S and fab. So much so that I went there and bought my stuff too! :)

LiGlitterBug · 23/12/2018 15:17

We used a mix of M&S and Waitrose for our wedding nibbles. Everyone thought they were lovely!

Theunreasonableone · 23/12/2018 15:19

I always use M&S for canapés and we have always enjoyed them

TheBaltictriangle · 23/12/2018 15:22

Costco party platters. Also, get bags of samosas from global foods freezer section in tesco or Asda and from Indian food shops rather than samosas from own brand supermarket lines.

Acopyofacopy · 23/12/2018 15:25

M&S is amazing, but I went to a Christmas party this week and all the nibbles were from Iceland and they were really nice!

beanaseireann · 23/12/2018 20:12

I wish we had Waitrose in Ireland.

Ladytinselmuff · 23/12/2018 20:38

I've used Waitrose Entertaining in the past & it did not disappoint.

AhhhhThatsBass · 23/12/2018 20:41

We have just bought all of ours from M&S. they’re pretty good, albeit quite expensive.

blueshoes · 23/12/2018 20:43

Aren't they very expensive?

I am making 60 home-made biggish zamosas. I cannot imagine how much that will cost from M&S or Waitrose.

Parker231 · 23/12/2018 20:45

We had food for last nights party from COOK - it was gorgeous and some items were quite unusual. There’s nothing left so I’m assuming everyone enjoyed it.

StrongTeaDropOfMilkNoSugar · 23/12/2018 21:00

I ordered party food from M&S for my 40th. It felt like there was more choice for canapé/ picky bits than Waitrose at the time hence why I chose them, and everyone really enjoyed it all. I’d definitely use them again.

MrsStrowman · 23/12/2018 21:02

M&S are always good, Costco can be excellent and good value if you have one locally and know someone with a membership, also for drinks

namechangedtoday15 · 23/12/2018 21:07

I was just about to recommend COOK too. Not cheap but absolutely lovely for a "no effort but impressive" approach for a special occasion.

And if you haven't ordered / shopped yet, there was no parking within about 200m of the local Waitrose today & the queue was 3 aisles long Confused

CherryPavlova · 23/12/2018 21:49

I think Cook are only ones that are remotely passable. Most look horrendously artificial, smothered in breadcrumbs and uninspiring compared to easy homemade ones.
I make my own with the children on Boxing Day before people arrive around 6pm. It’s not much more effort than shop bought.
This year it’s miniature hog roast buns, chilli cheese straws, smoked salmon and horseradish blinis, sticky sausages, devils on horseback, mushroom vol au vents, bruschetta, chilli prawn on guacamole, Stilton and walnut on apricots, brie and cranberry samosa and mini fajitas.

You must be joking that the above is not more effort than shop bought. I make my own canapes and would never dream of doing that amount of variety, in addition to a main course, unless canapes are the only thing you are making. But even then I hope you are feeding a horde to go through that amount of trouble.
