I wish you good luck and let's hope there are not to many rude customers to deal with on one of the biggest shopping days of the year.
I had quite a few yesterday and just smiled at him and that got to him big time. Let's also hear any stories you have on customers what has happened today or the last few days.

I was shopping yesterday and the shopping assistants were all really helpful and absolutely lovely, which made my mad panic shop much easier to bear. So for anyone working today, with generosity and humour, i say a big thank you.

Newjobnewstart · 23/12/2018 09:50

A library close to me is opening christmas day for a few hours this year.

StyleOfTheTimes · 23/12/2018 09:56

@mudmonster it really brings out the goodwill to all men in people doesn’t it 🤣 it’s like a shock to people that Christmas has come around again! I had a lady who shouted at me because I wouldn’t sell her certain quantities of medication over the counter! Good luck and I hope you have a few days off to enjoy the festive period with your family and friends.

Orchiddingme · 23/12/2018 09:56

Everyone seemed in a jolly mood when I did my shop at 8pm in Aldi last night. There was no good pre-prepared turkey things left, but it was quiet, the lady on the till was chatty, the customers nice. I guess there's a few knobbers out there but in general it was all quite civilized!

Its actually Boxing Day which can be hell for workers - esp at the 'returns' desk - think angry people bringing back Xmas presents which are faulty and yelling at the poor worker that they 'ruined Christmas' for their children. Also scrums at checkouts of people spending their Xmas vouchers, and lots of moaning about queues. Was so busy one Boxing Day the store manager had to go on a checkout.
So glad I don't work in retail anymore.

Polarbearflavour · 23/12/2018 10:19

Namastethefuckawayfromme - loved that story especially as that written warning means nothing to you now Xmas Grin Whst a silly woman -and a stupid manager for disciplining you. What exactly were you meant to do - prostrate yourself in front of silly customer and beg for forgiveness for not having any bread?

Darkestnight · 23/12/2018 10:19

My store manager is great he helps stack the shelves and has been known to jump on a till.
I wish everyone working with the public today and tomorrow a great day what ever job you do.
I'm about to head into the lions den in a hour and will update tonight if I'm not to tired Xmas Smile

Ds is doing today, Monday and Boxing Day. He's delighted getting 1.5x for some of those hours and where he works you do Xmas Eve or NYE and he's picked 24th.

Darkestnight · 23/12/2018 10:25

That's the one thing making me get through this the extra money I will get and it will pay for a new hybrid bike to get to work which I really need.

My wife works in the clothes dept of one of the big four. She said most people have been kind but has helped a lot of men shopping for their wives Grin. She doesn't get much time off though so trying to make Xmas day special for her.

teainthemorning · 23/12/2018 10:41

@Mudmonster and @StyleOfTheTimes I'm with you. I had a woman turn up yesterday about half an hour before we closed demanding that I give her six weeks worth of blister packs for her mum. They're taking her back to their home country today and nobody had bothered to tell us. She has MST in her trays so there was no way in all the Merry Hells that was going to happen!

It was the festive cherry on a week of crazy cake. Best of luck to us all tomorrow!

Good luck to the public facing transport staff, police, A&E staff and paramedics, couriers and delivery drivers & postmen, emergency / non emergency call operators etc

Polarbearflavour · 23/12/2018 13:07

Good luck to anybody dealing with the great British public this Christmas! [santa]

I will not be going shopping until after Boxing Day. I’m really really pleased to work in an office and I have nearly 2 weeks off work. I’m also thankful to all the people who do work over the holiday, doing much needed work in retail and hospitality and to the emergency services keeping us safe and to healthcare workers looking after sick patients.

And anybody else doing vital work (railway engineering works anybody?)

Alarae · 23/12/2018 13:17

When I was at university I worked in a large M&S food hall on Xmas eve.

It was overloaded with people, either loitering in aisles blocking everyone or constantly asking questions.

Towards the end of my shift I had given up with life when a customer asked me where candles were. I silently pointed right behind her and walked off Blush

BigChocFrenzy · 23/12/2018 13:32

A Happy Christmas 💐 🎄 without aggro, to anyone who has to work in retail

I live in Germany, where shops have to close every Sunday and Bank Holiday.

It gives a much better life balance, especially for retail staff:
We still manage to buy what we need, but during the other days

So, shops are shut today as usual,
then open tomorrow until 2 pm only
then closed all 25+26 December

iirc, they are open until 2pm NYE
and definitely closed NYD

proseccoaficionado · 23/12/2018 13:37

Oh my, years ago I used to work for Urban Decay in Scotland. They had this palette vault edition (had all the naked palettes). They obviously sold in no time.

So this woman (35-40 ish) approaches me and says: "do you have any left? DO NOT LIE, I know you have LOADS in the back"

When I said no she yelled "YOU RUINED MY CHRISTMAS, it's never going to be the same BECAUSE OF YOU". I still laugh.

U2HasTheEdge · 23/12/2018 13:48

I worked yesterday, I am this afternoon/evening again and I am in Xmas day. Not retail. I feel sorry for myself because I feel like I am missing the build up and as much as I love my job my children really want me at home.

I feel for anyone working over Xmas. I hope everyone has decent shifts without too much hassle. My sons who are in retail said yesterday wasn't too bad at all. Busy but not awfully so and no rudeness, well no more than normal.

RomanyRoots · 23/12/2018 13:54

Well, I'm not a sales assistant but where we are I honestly haven't noticed anything at all, apart from everyone being nice, kind and cheerful.
I'm in a town in the NW and I was out yesterday and earlier today and apart from the rain it was lovely.
Even Tesco was good, me and dd were having a laugh with a lady over pigs in duvets. Grin

TheFairyCaravan · 23/12/2018 14:03

I've not been to the shops since Friday when DS2's old school friend served us in Aldi. It was quite busy in there, but everyone was being very polite and I heard a lot of people wish the staff a merry Christmas.

DS2 finished 3 nights shifts in A&E this morning. He was in the bit where they put the drunks on Friday night. All the staff got a lot of abuse in there. He's home later until he's back in on Boxing night.

Good luck to everyone dealing with the public. I really don't know when, as a society, we became so rude and entitled.

britnay · 23/12/2018 14:04

6 weeks of blister packs :O AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
That is all

DarlingNikita · 23/12/2018 14:13

Idk who the fuck thinks about popping to the library on Christmas Eve
Oh dear, I'm thinking about going in to look for a couple of nice reads for the few days I'm taking off.

I'm a sad case though – sitting reading books with a cup of tea and a blanket is my idea of the most fun you can have.

WeeBean · 23/12/2018 14:17

I've done time in 2 major clothes stores and a busy Spar garage over Christmas and most customers were lovely, full of Christmas cheer but when you got a bad customer they were really bad, you know the entitled sort who think the world revolves around them. Our Spar garage, which had a decent shop so was busy, opened until midnight on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day was the only day it closed. I remember my last Christmas working there it was 12:15am and we were clearing up the mess customers had made during the shift when we noticed a queue forming at the night hatch (it was a 24hr garage). The abuse we took when people couldn't get their milk/cigarettes/bread/petrol was completely ridiculous, the manager actually got quite angry. All of us who worked that shift were teenagers because the older ones had kids to look after, was a lovely start to Christmas Day every year.

Galacticat · 23/12/2018 14:18

I'm veterinary and on call Christmas day and Boxing day . In the past I've been called on the emergency phone to go in to clip nails and empty anal glands . Nail clip £6.00 + OOH on Christmas Day fee doesn't even deter some owners.
