.... because he’s known to have had expressed some highly anti-Semitic opinions.

I mean YABU.

RangeRider · 22/12/2018 08:19

If Fantastic Mr Fox suddenly starts spouting anti-semitic views while down his foxhole then fine, ban him. But don't throw everything worthwhile away when someone does something wrong in their life - there's no-one on the planet, alive or dead, who's committed zero offences of some kind. Appreciate their good, condemn their bad - discuss it where it's appropriate but don't bring it up when all you're doing is reading a 5 yo their bedtime story because they won't understand and don't need to know. Save it for when it does make sense.

Booboostwo · 22/12/2018 08:23

Plato and Aristotle promoted slavery and misogyny, start from there and you’ll never read anything. People should read Plato and Aristotle but we shouldn’t hide from the misogyny or minimise what they said on the inferior nature of slaves.

student26 · 22/12/2018 08:23

Yes, let’s ban every book! I’m sure most authors will have said something to offend one person or another so let’s get rid of them all! FGS! Roald Dahl is a fantastic writer and has worked his love of story telling into the lives of millions. My classes love Roald Dahl and so did I when I was growing up. Doesn’t excuse the awful things he said, but there is too much of a call to ban anything these days. You won’t win this argument OP.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 22/12/2018 08:26

I love E Nesbit's books. But when I read them as an adult I was shocked at the overt anti-semitism. And no, Thatsomebad anti-semitism is not simply a term used to help Israel (not Jews Hmm) get away with genocide in Palestine.

The reality is, many books from the past have very dubious messages about race. At what point this cancels out the positive aspects of the books is debatable.

donquixotedelamancha · 22/12/2018 08:28

The term anti semetic will be remembered in history as the term Jews used to get away with genocide in Palestine.

The occupation (it's not a genocide) of Palestine is being carried out by the Israeli government. Your ridiculous statement is like blaming black people for the actions of Idi Amin.

CommanderDaisy · 22/12/2018 08:29

Lewis Carrolls supposed paedophlic tendencies are a topic of considerable academic debate. He's neither been tried or convicted for it, nor is it that confirmed. Nothing like trial by historical rumour.
Your desperate plea ' well can we at least ban Alice in wonderland then' is making you sound a bit odd tbh.
Nabokov wrote Lolita - should that be banned? Is he a paedophile too ?
Raphael painted fat naked cherub babies - should we ban his work too? Is he a molester?

You seem pretty anxious to get banning books underway. There's probably scope for work for you in China or Russia . They enjoy that sort of thought control.

You haven't answer the second part of my question yet.

Iamtheoneandonly2018 · 22/12/2018 08:29

Well we have all the problems in the world and you want to add children's books? WTF?

Biologifemini · 22/12/2018 08:32

While his views are thoroughly depressing, if you read his books you would be none the wiser about these views.
Of course his books shouldn’t be banned.

donquixotedelamancha · 22/12/2018 08:33

@OP. You represent a far greater threat to minorities like Jews than Charlie and the Chocolate factory.

The ideology of cultural control that you espouse is just a mild version of fascism. The defence against the horrors of the past reoccurring is freedom of thought and sppech, which you would eliminate.

Oakenbeach · 22/12/2018 08:34

Hitler was never tried and convicted.... so you’d be ok with me displaying his artwork?

Hitler's atrocities are more than rumour and speculation...

masktaster · 22/12/2018 08:39

And sure, if you want to. Hitler was a talented artist.

BadLad · 22/12/2018 08:41

As well as being a ridiculous comparison, this is factually wrong. He was arrested and sent to prison. That's where he dictated Mein Kampf.

CommanderDaisy · 22/12/2018 08:43

Now you're just getting silly.
Lewis Carrolll vs Hitler?
In Hitlers case- there was a wee bit of documentary evidence , a few eyewitnesses and the odd bit of film, and I think , at guess mind - he might've just got tried and convicted if he had not shot himself.

Mine Kampf was an interesting read / should that banned too?

labazs · 22/12/2018 08:43

for crying out loud first enid blyton now him thats getting stupid

Tune in for today’s Celebrity Deathmatch...

KarmaStar · 22/12/2018 08:44

I agree with sethis!

Nanny0gg · 22/12/2018 08:45

Hitler was never tried and convicted.... so you’d be ok with me displaying his artwork

Because he committed suicide.

This is getting beyond stupid now. I know it's the school holidays, but I'd expect better arguments from a 12 year-old

CommanderDaisy · 22/12/2018 08:46

JacquesHammer
😂

Nanny0gg · 22/12/2018 08:48

Anyway. Can we stop now?

Godwin's Law!

CommanderDaisy · 22/12/2018 08:52

Donquixotedelamancha

Absolutely agree

Izzabellasasperella · 22/12/2018 08:53

My Dad lived in London just before and during the 2nd world war and he always said there was a lot of anti-Semitism at the time. Something which I believe has been hushed up.

MiddleClassProblem · 22/12/2018 08:54

Let’s face it, majority of authors pre saying a certain time would have held some racist and/or homophobic views.

You’d have to ban most of them unless you feel anti semititism outweighs any other kind of racial hatred which in turn would you a racist...

I’m guessing there’s no Disney allowed either.
