Not AIBU, posting for traffic.

Received my smear test results today, abnormal, p6 HAIL Severe dyskaryosis. Probably missing spelled that.

I haven't had a smear test in a long time so was expecting it to be abnormal.

I have been referred for a colposcopy&oq.

Anyone else had similar results and everything turned out OK?

I haven't had this myself, but sorry to hear you'll need a colposcopy. Do you have a date for it yet? I hope that it goes well Flowers hopefully someone with experience will be along shortly.

FinallyFree123456789 · 21/12/2018 20:29

Hi @Myheartbelongsto

I had the same - I went for a colopscopy - which then showed I had cervical cancer stage 1.

However, it can mean that you have CIN 3 which is not cancer. It is advanced CIN - caused by the hpv and is not cancer - it is pre cancer.

Jos cervical cancer trust is very helpful and reassuring. X

maddening · 21/12/2018 20:31

Have had colposcopy twice - not pleasant but local anaesthetic means not the worst. Good luck x

WhippettyWeekend · 21/12/2018 20:33

I’m not an expert and haven’t experienced this either, but two relatives have. For both of them, the cells were still pre-cancerous and successfully removed. Good luck and I’m sorry you’re going through this Flowers

piraterach · 21/12/2018 20:36

Sorry to hear you're going through this. It must be a horrendously worrying time for you. Just remember that the point of these tests is to pick things up before symptoms arise because finding it early makes the chances of fixing it so much better.

I've never had a colposcopy so can't comment on how that's going to be. Hope you have someone in rl who can hold your hand through this Smile

Myheartbelongsto · 21/12/2018 20:38

Sorry for the typos, phone is a nightmare and I'm a passenger in a car.

The doctor showed me a pic on Google of high grade changes and the next stage was pre cancerous. Her English wasn't great to be honest and even though I asked a billion questions I left the surgery so confused.

Then when I got home I rang cervical check who put me through to a nurse who then had to look up what p6 Hsil meant!!

I just wanted someone to say it's not cancer, it's not pre cancerous, don't worry.

I think I'm going to vomit.

My sister in law had exactly the same as you, had the treatment swiftly and had 2 smears within 6 months thereafter- all clear. Huge success rate x

Foodylicious · 21/12/2018 20:43

The colposcopy in itself was not too bad.
Though uncomfy.

When the Dr looked at the abnormal area she gave me the option of having that bit removed there and then.
I took this instead of going back another day.
It didn't take too long.
The only thing that would have helped, would have been to have someone with me.

After biopsy it turned out yo be grade 3 cin.

Good luck. I remember it being a very stressful time Flowers

Foodylicious · 21/12/2018 20:45

Just to add, that was in 2011.
All been clear since then!

CrookedMe · 21/12/2018 20:57

I had CIN3 maybe 10 years ago. Had a colposcopy, they removed the dodgy cells, had a lot of crampy pain that day and discharge for weeks.

Have had yearly smears since then, all fine.

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 21/12/2018 21:01

6 months after DS13 was born I had exactly this. The first colposcopy wasn't 100% successful and more cells were removed a while later; 12 years on and I just have annual smears - all of which have come back clear.

It's terrifying when you hear the words, and you immediately enter into panic mode. You'll have your colposcopy, your follow-up smears and you'll be absolutely ok. You will.

user1493413286 · 21/12/2018 21:06

I had the same result from a smear; had a colposcopy then the cells removed. It wasn’t my favourite experience but it wasn’t painful and I’ve just had a normal smear 6 months later.
Try not to panic; it’s highly likely that you’re fine and you may just need some cells removed. The important part is to keep up with future smear tests

currentcake · 21/12/2018 21:09

My own have come back fine but my DM smear didn't. She got herself into such a mess with worry that she even struggled to go to work until 'she knew what she was up against'
Anyway, after they did the next step everything came back absolutely fine. Please please do NOT get yourself all worked up about it at this point. It's highly likely that everything will be just fine and if it isn't then you go from there
Best of luck and love

Myheartbelongsto · 21/12/2018 21:16

If there was any pre cancerous or cancerous cells in my sample I would have been told that right?

I've had a pain in my side all day which is sending me over the edge as i'm imagining all sorts.

You're all so lovely and I really do appreciate your reassuring words x

Ozziewozzie · 21/12/2018 21:19

Years ago, when I was 22, I had moderate dyschariosis. I was referred to colposcopy. I had to have laser treatment. It didn’t take long at all. Then they gave me iodine pessaries.
It very much depends on your case though. Your gynae will talk you through it all.
I took someone with me for a hand hold.

CrookedMe · 21/12/2018 21:25

When I got my results and referral for colposcopy it said 'severe dyskaryosis CIN 3'.

That was 10 years ago (and in Scotland) though and probably most trusts do things differently.

I was lucky in a way because my friend is a gynae nurse and her attitude is very much 'this is one of those things women experience' which made it seem not very scary. I actually never even worried about cancer - maybe I was young and stupid!

Myheartbelongsto · 21/12/2018 21:27

Here in Ireland it has come to light recently that many women were given the wrong results for their smear and a lady died a couple of months ago, she was only 37 so I'm panicking so much. I just googled CIN3 as the terminology is different here maybe. Should nothave googled it!

I wish that I could go for the colposcopy tomorrow and just find out what's going on.

OP posts:
CrookedMe · 21/12/2018 21:29

But CIN3 isn't cancer unless I'm misunderstanding?

Myheartbelongsto · 21/12/2018 21:43

No it's not cancer, I'm just trying to work out if CIN3 is the same as HSIL Severe dyskaryosis so I can be reassured by posters experiences.

OP posts:
WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 21/12/2018 21:44

Jo's Trust has a good explanation of the different results and treatment.

CrookedMe · 21/12/2018 21:57

Google seems to say so but that's the extent of my knowledge!

Ozziewozzie · 21/12/2018 22:11

It was a while ago, but as I had it explained to me, the levels moderate and severe, determine how much the cells have changed on the cervix. Normal cells are obviously normal. Then when there’s a slight change, moderate. More of a change, severe. Whilst still on this scale, as I understood it, it was not cancer. It was described as cells changing towards that possibly. So by lasering them, the abnormal cells are killed.

I was then followed up regularly with smears yo endure all was healthy again. 20 years on, all smears have been perfect. It also did not effect my fertility or labour. (5 kids)

I was just as scared as you, I really was. Luckily though it was the days before we all had internet so I had no option to look stuff up.

Myheartbelongsto · 21/12/2018 22:15

There's so much conflicting info. The nurse I spoke to on the phone today said that severe just meant that I had to be seen soon.

It's so hard not to worry!

I have 3 young children, nothing can happen to me.

OP posts:
gottastopeatingchocolate · 21/12/2018 22:25

I have - and it turned out OK.

At the time of the colposcopy I had an immediate LLETZ procedure. It was OK. If you have one, do research what to expect as I had a couple of moments in the healing process that no-one had warned me about.

Had more regular smears after - can't remember if it was 6 monthly or annually. Signed off now to normal intervals between smears.

Had a baby post all this too.

Try not to fret. I know it's not easy, but our minds are great at making things far worse than they need to be.
