To think that food sold too cheap has no value?

Lidl has the main traditional Christmas veg on sale at 19p per bag. Asda at 20p. I saw folk today putting 4 bags of sprouts and similar of carrots etc into their trollies, not just one, many people
Are they all catering for 20 plus folk? Or are they just buying because it's so cheap and it will all end up in landfill? Surely just buy what you will use and so leave those bargains for those who really need it.

Maybe they have animals that also like veg?? I think guinea pigs love sprouts and my dog prefers carrots to dog treats!!!

TooManyPaws · 21/12/2018 20:26

I regularly buy things cheap at Aldi and Lidl, then freeze or dehydrate for later. It's just canny shopping.

EmUntitled · 21/12/2018 20:29

I dont think anyone buys short life items like carrots intending to throw them away. Carrots are always really cheap anyway.

I think many people over cater for Christmas (my grandma would always do about double what we actually needed) so maybe they think they need 3 bags of carrots when they actually onky need 2

PylonsPylonsPylons · 21/12/2018 20:29

Stored correctly that veg will last for ages! I bought extra carrots swede and potatoes today. I will be using it all!

WorraLiberty · 21/12/2018 20:31

Maybe they're shopping for NYD as well?

bellabasset · 21/12/2018 20:33

My neighbour cleans, chops and blitzes veg before freezing. You can not only add it to mince and casseroles but to make soups. You can also roast. Any unused veg is sent to my neighbours animals.

You can freeze it mixed or separately.

RebelWitchFace · 21/12/2018 20:33

My carrots last for a month or even more in the fridge, not to mention a good cook can use them for more than a side for Christmas dinner.
I'd rather people were in a position of possibly buying more than they need than not being able to afford food.

LaurieFairyCake · 21/12/2018 20:38

I HATE food wastage with a passion - almost £800 is thrown out by the average family every year Sad

It actually makes me really angry. The idea that some person on minimum wage has picked and packed that carrot, has driven it to a distribution centre, has loaded it onto a supermarket shelf and some FUCKER has thrown it in a bin because they can afford it a week later enrages me.

Fuck you people who do this.

bumblebee39 · 21/12/2018 20:41

Anyone else going to Lidl now? 😂🙈

Augusta2012 · 21/12/2018 20:42

They’re called loss leaders. They sell something at a loss so that people who come to buy them buy other stuff while they’re there.

So yes it turns a profit ultimately.

bumblebee39 · 21/12/2018 20:43

@Augusta2012

I'm a sucker for it 🙈 always go in for the bargain and leave with bags of other crap!

Augusta2012 · 21/12/2018 20:45

Whoever picks your food whether it is Lidl or Waitrose organic will be on minimum wage. Do you think it’s morally superior if vegetables from Waitrose are chucked out because they are more expensive? Do you want people outside shops with clipboards checking wage to veg price ratio to make sure it’s okay?

Loss leaders are effectively subsidies by the rich on the poor anyway.

LaurieFairyCake · 21/12/2018 20:49

No of course I don't think it's better for it to be a Waitrose carrot

Just simply responding to the 19p carrots at Lidl

There is certainly a problem with them being as cheap as 19p because most people would chuck them without care as it's so cheap - but there's still an environmental cost of throwing them out whether they cost 19p or £3

TinslePaws · 21/12/2018 20:50

I'm cooking for 3 adults at Christmas and went to get my last bits today. I actually spent more money on one sodding carrot, one blasted parsnip and 3 potatoes than it would have cost me for a kilo bag of each. I simply don't have the space in my tiny fridge-freezer to store all that produce or copious amounts of leftovers. It's madness that it would have cost me less money to throw food away than just buy exactly what we need....

RebelWitchFace · 21/12/2018 20:52

@LaurieFairyCake so what happens to the poor minimum jobs people if the fuckers don't buy enough to make shops profitable or don't keep buying fresh (wether they throw it away or not)?

LaurieFairyCake · 21/12/2018 20:54

Well it's obviously not either or Hmm

You can't possibly argue people should buy food they don't need and throw it away to increase minimum wage jobs?

That would be MENTAL

tabulahrasa · 21/12/2018 20:58

I went to Lidl and bought 4 bags of carrots, parsnips and sprouts... I buy 4 of whatever is in offer most weeks in there, it’s for work... and yes I need 4 of them.

Missingstreetlife · 21/12/2018 21:10

Hate throwing food away, whatever it cost, but I like to eat out and restaurants chuck stuff out?
Lots of people are entertaining,,but I think people just get in a panic.
Those deals are awful, and Bogof, 2-4-1 etc

ParPitieh · 21/12/2018 21:12

I would think most supermarkets give away food that's about to go off to their employees than chuck them.

WilburforceRaven · 21/12/2018 21:14

I buy stuff like chestnuts to use throughout the year. Why do you assume people are just wasting it?

userschmoozer · 21/12/2018 21:19

Yabvu. I bought veg for the weekend, for Xmas day, and I'm making soup.
I doubt the people buying 19p carrots at Lidl throw them away, I don't know anyone who has a food budget big enough to throw away £800 a year.

Anticlockwatcher · 21/12/2018 21:20

Brexit. The Dow Jones. Nasdaq 100 has dropped 4% today. People are getting worried. If you can grab veggie for 20p, I would be doing it and storing it for the inevitable collapse.

This has nothing to do with wastage or greed, and everything to do with the sense of unease caused by the Gatwick drone incident in addition to the things mentioned.

DeadDoorpost · 21/12/2018 21:22

We have a roast almost every day during Christmas hols from the 25th to the 2nd. For about 5 people each day, that's a lot of veg.

It's the meat that's the problem. The cost doesn't really change. So a lot of veg helps make up any lacking meat

BikeRunSki · 21/12/2018 21:25

I’ve just bought a lot more food than usudk because we’ll all be home for the next 2 weeks.

Ruddle91 · 21/12/2018 21:27

We have guinea pigs so yeah we needed the 4 bags of this that and the other

Plus we're hosting friends tomorrow, having a meal just us and cooking for some other family between Xmas and new year.
