To think that eating for 2 hours of the day is not intermittent fasting!!

A friend of mine and her husband only eat for a 2 hour window in the day in a bid to lose weight. This seems ludicrous to me and unhealthy. Surely this isn't a diet anyone should be on and could do more harm than good!

Thats quite extreme!

I do 16 hours fast to 8 hours eat but might try 18:6 in the NY

Frenchfancy · 21/12/2018 13:00

Well it is a form of intermittent fasting, and I would certainly rather do that than something like lighter life.

Butchyrestingface · 21/12/2018 13:02

Sounds like intermittent fasting to me. Whether it’s healthy or not is another issue.

Travisandthemonkey · 21/12/2018 13:03

Depends if they’ve arranged a Tudor style feast everyday and gorge themselves on ribs of beef and swan and pies for a solid two hours

Point taken, it is a form of intermittent fasting but I just don't think starving yourself for 22 hours out of every 24 hour period can be healthy in any way shape or form.

It can be good for you, provided the diet is nutritionally rich. Remember this was often the natural diet pattern for a lot of people prior to WW2.

easyandy101 · 21/12/2018 13:08

I do 18:6 or thereabouts most days

You don't feel like you're starving just because you're not eating

StealthPolarBear · 21/12/2018 13:08

Which people?

RingThoseChristmasBells · 21/12/2018 13:10

This cheered me up. How many donuts do they eat in that two hour window? Grin

Grimbles · 21/12/2018 13:11

The point is that you are not starving

FamilyTrrree · 21/12/2018 13:13

I personally think it's insane to fast for that long with such a small window for food. No wonder so many people in this country are overweight when people think methods like this are good. It's only teaching you to ignore your body's natural queues for hunger and no doubt you then stuff your face for 2 hours, teaching you to not listen to your body telling you it's full. It's basically starvation and the binging!

Fasting for 18 hours, eating for 6 or fasting for 16, eating for 8 don't bother me so much. Plenty of time to fit 2 substantial meals into that time and allowing some time in between so you're hungry for the next meal.

Are you basing this on anything other than your gut instinct that it's wrong? Have you looked at any of the research? Have you any idea of how they eat within that 2 hours?

What is the accepted 'healthy' way of eating doesn't work for everyone. Science can't really explain why they can put two people on the exact same diet, and yet they don't feel the same level of food satisfaction, they don't metabolise food in the same way, etc, etc, etc.

If it works for them, then good on them.

FamilyTrrree · 21/12/2018 13:19

Id be starving if I didn't eat for 22 hours every day!

I do 16 hours fast to 8 hours eat

Isn't that just a normal day?

TheFaerieQueene · 21/12/2018 13:22

Is it continuous eating?

FamilyTrrree · 21/12/2018 13:23

Not far off but I assume most people would eat more hours than this. Unless you are someone who skips breakfast.

If you have breakfast at 8, you'd have to have your last meal at 4.

I imagine it’s much closer to what our bodies have evolved over millions of years to cope with. Much more so than the continual eating that our culture seems to be nudging is towards.
Wouldn’t do it personally.

Fatasfook · 21/12/2018 13:25

Do some research. Its fine and can reduce the risk of some health issues.

AnnieOH1 · 21/12/2018 13:26

I do this most days without intention. Skip breakfast, don't have time for lunch and then just eat dinner. I didn't realise it had a name! :)

WitsEnding · 21/12/2018 13:27

Is this the One Meal A Day diet (OMAD)? I thought it sounded interesting and would save having to think about food all the time

fanfan18 · 21/12/2018 13:30

*@fanfan18

Yeah but I'm crap at diets generally and sticking to this one rule has definitely helped. I was a late night snacker!

I only eat and drink (except water) between 12noon and 8pm.

FancyPuffin · 21/12/2018 13:30

I eat one meal a day. I don’t starve myself and I certainly don’t stuff myself Confused

I can easily have 24/30 hours between meals. It baffles me how people can eat 3 times a day.

There’s nothing virtuous about my eating (I don’t think anyone knows) I just don’t feel like eating more. I couldn’t give a shiny shit how many meals other people eat.

JustABetterPlayer · 21/12/2018 13:32

It’s actually perfectly reasonable to eat ALL your calorie intake in one sitting and actually has a fair few benefits. It means you can have a larger and less healthy meal thus avoiding an over use of rabbit food Grin

MissRhubarb · 21/12/2018 13:39

Intermittent fasting has a whole range of health benefits. I have a friend going through cancer treatment at the moment who was talking to me about it recently.

"Id be starving if I didn't eat for 22 hours every day!"

But you're asleep a good chunk of the time anyway. If I said to you that - (not as part of a planned fast) I'd skipped breakfast, had a massive feast for lunch and so not bothered with dinner that day, I don't think most people would see a problem with that.

I have another friend with mental health issues who adopted your friends' pattern of eating. He lost a lot of weight over a period of time, which has helped him with a lot of health problems. The good thing was that the weight came of v. gradually. He says he doesn't feel hungry in between times or deprived or anything like that.
