my favourite time of the year as well as the shortest day, daylight starts to extend in the next few days even if it is a minute or so.
abvu - mini pizzas, and buffet food for breakfast, a glass of mead [or 6 later] will attack the treats big time later and my dcs are coming home for the celebrations. i'm as happy as a seagull with a stolen bag of chips ! [ my type 2 gets dealt with tomorrow Grin] for today we party hard !
have a great one fellow pagans and we are with you in spirit at stone henge for the duration.

Have a lovely day.

swingofthings · 21/12/2018 07:41

Well that's some celebration! I have to say that knowing we are now starting to count upwards to more delight makes today quite a special day!

MarklahMarklah · 21/12/2018 07:43

Sounds lovely.
We're booked to go out to a Winter Solstice Storytelling event this evening.
Will have to have a glass of mead later. After many years of not doing anything, I introduced the idea of a small ritual at Samhain with my DH, DD and a friend, and they enjoyed it, so will try to do something small to celebrate.
I've friends and family over for Christmas, so trying to keep on track with other activities (housework being the main one).

HostessWithoutAClue · 21/12/2018 07:44

We've got a lovely day planned. Lighting the fire, bringing the tree in, chocolate Yule log for lunch! Lots of candles and roast beef and all the trimmings for dinner.

Sitranced · 21/12/2018 07:45

Happy Yule!

Ifailed · 21/12/2018 07:48

I'm happy it's the winter solstice, not for any religious reasons, but because the days will slowly start getting longer!

Canibuildasnowman · 21/12/2018 07:48

You near Brighton?? You can go to the awesome pagan winter solstice event that is the fabulous ‘Burning of the Clocks’

paintinmyhairAgain · 21/12/2018 07:56

thanks mners it's such an exciting time for us knowing that our [pagan sabat calendar] spring starts in a couple of months. Smile really looking forward to seeing bulbs breaking through and nature waking up after her long winter sleep.
whatever you are doing today, have a great one SmileWineCake.

I only like it because it marks the turning point in winter, and the days will now slowly start to lengthen again.

In reality I truly dislike this time of year. Far too dark for far too long.

PoutySprout · 21/12/2018 08:43

Happy Solstice!

happy winter solstice fellow pagans [and of course mumsnet] !
Odiepants · 21/12/2018 08:46

Happy winter solstice! I have to admit I don't do big ceLebrations with DS's birthday in 2 days and then Christmas but I said a special hello to the sunrise this morning. It's downhill to the summer from now Grin

OneStepMoreFun · 21/12/2018 08:46

Happy Solstice Pagans!

I'm not a pagan, I'm a Chrstian but very grateful for and respectful of the heap of gorgeous customs we nicked from you. The celebration of lights at the darkest cusp of the year, the evergreens, the feasting. All brilliant ways to get through the hibernation weeks and stay lively.

Are you having a feast? Last year my parents were with us for Christmas and as my dad is an atheist we also celebrated the solstice with a sun-face pie and a toffee yule log on the 21st.

squashyhat · 21/12/2018 08:46

Oh lovely Pouty Sprout Hmm. Whatever happened to peace and good will to all? Or is that only for the thieving Christian bastards?

paintinmyhairAgain · 21/12/2018 08:59

one we have lots of buffet, soft drinks, alcohol, mainly veggie but cocktail sausages and similar meat /fish things too. dh and me are having veggie cornish pasties sent up from cornwall as we love them so much ! Grin

meant to say one pouty doesn't speak on our behalf, yes, christenity did nick a lot of our stuff but we don't begrudge anyone enjoying themselves as a result of it.
have fun and enjoy whatever you celebrate.

My friend gave me a lovely candle to light tonight, so going to have a family ritual early evening as busy evening with parties.
Love this tome of year, having a Yule log on my Christmas lunch as a nod to Yule time. Happy Solstice!

mama1980 · 21/12/2018 09:09

Happy Solstice Everyone Smile
We will be baking sun bread today, Pentagon lanterns and hopefully going on a walk tonight over the fields to observe the moon and meteors.

paintinmyhairAgain · 21/12/2018 09:11

Hi all! I've not had the best year so I'm looking forward to this new solar year more than usual. Many happy returns of the sun!

JeezYouLoon · 21/12/2018 09:13

Happy winter solstice!

I was brought up CofE but the older I get the more I'm moving towards the idea of Paganism.

Enb76 · 21/12/2018 09:22

I am not pagan, nor any sort of religious or spiritual but I do love the natural turning of the year. I’ve just read a thing about the deer mother, venerated through Northern Europe in the Neolithic period. Only female reindeer keep their horns through winter and they carried the sun in their antlers as they migrated bringing food and the promise of spring. Seems a good reason to celebrate. Of course now, they’ve transitioned into male deer and are yoked to a sleigh transporting a big fat man who brings plastic tat in homage to a long dead Palestinian.

Poudrenez · 21/12/2018 09:25

Happy Solstice! I am not Pagan (disclaimer - my Mum is), but I am so happy to know that this is the darkest point, and it's lighter from here on in. For me the turning point is in early January when I don't leave work in the pitch dark.
