AIBU to think my doctor has got it wrong (with pics)

So, DS 21 months wakes up yesterday morning a bit rashy - nothing crazy - but I suffer with eczema and I thought it looked like that (dry/blotchy) called doc, got him in yesterday PM, by that time it was blistering but I still (first time parent naivety?) thought eczema and kind of guided the GP in that direction.
He prescribes mild steroid, emollient, bath additive.
By bed time last night little fella is beside himself and I send my mum a pic - she says defo chickenpox, no doubt, as does another experienced mum.
I do a bit of googling and it does indeed look like chickenpox to me.
Calls doc this morning, he says bring DS in to see senior doc this afternoon. Senior doc looks at him, says defo chickenpox, then changes mind and says cant be chickenpox as he has none on the back of his neck.
Tells me to carry on treating as eczema.
So I'm all a little bit torn now, because my instincts are telling me chickenpox, calamine and antihistamine, doc is telling me eczema, mild steroid and emollient.
Can you kind, and more experienced people out there tell me if this, in your opinion (I appreciate not medically trained) looks like chickenpox or not.
Thanks in advance.
x
PS - I also feel pretty shit because I put him though a Christmas party, and paraded him round as the star of Bethlehem yesterday and he must have been feeling rough. :(

That not chicken pox. My son gets spots like this when his eczema gets really bad. It’s either that or he’s had hfm a number of times.

You can still give 2.5 ml of piriton for the itching for eczema but I wouldn’t put calamine as it’d be drying. Get some epiderm and properly slather it on.

unicorncow · 20/12/2018 23:14

@scrolling123 that doesn't look like chicken pox to me but I've no idea what else it could be sorry. Hope your little one recovers fast

Bouledeneige · 20/12/2018 23:14

Eczema sufferer here - it doesn't look like it to me. Or chickenpox.

I'd go piriton and calamine. And some calpol to ease the pain.

Poor love.

Bouledeneige · 20/12/2018 23:15

You havent started using bio washing powder have you? Avoid that and soap. I'm sure you are...

Ryderryder · 20/12/2018 23:18

Eczema can look like chicken pox. My dd used to get it like that and the number of people who thought she had chicken pox but it was eczema.

Jamiefraserskilt · 20/12/2018 23:19

My lad had exactly the same. Eczema got out of control and infected. Made him miserable. All lower limb and below waist.
Doused him with creams including fucedin and then popped his legs into tubogrip to stop him scratching. Took ten days to calm.
Poor wee thing.

youvegottobekidding · 20/12/2018 23:19

Take him back to GP. It could be eczema herpecticum, my dd had this about 3 yrs ago, I went to the drs 3 times in one week before one dr finally didn't recognised it as normal eczema & sent her straight up to children's a&e department for urgent dermatologist treatment, she needed anti-viral meds asap. The spots/blisters she had were all over her body, everywhere, she got them on her face, near her eyes, they were in groups of blisters as well as odd ones on their own. She was put on a couple of antibiotics, steroid creams. As the spots/blisters began to dry a little (as some would weep) they looked like cold sores.

whiteworld · 20/12/2018 23:20

Looks like guttate psoriasis to me. Has he had strep throst/a throat infection?

EugenesAxe · 20/12/2018 23:22

Chicken pox on my children was much more obviously fluid filled blisters. Those don't look like they are filled with fluid. I do agree with the eczema theory more than chicken pox. My children's pox was all over their heads; hairline, mouth, neck, even eyes. Then to the torso and legs a bit.

posthistoricmonsters · 20/12/2018 23:23

I'd go in for a second opinion, and if they're adamant it's eczema, ask for that product which can be put in the bath, which they also make a cream under as well. My DD was prescribed it when she was very small. And I need to get her seen again years later, because she's now coming up with an issue in her upper arms and she's scratching it and making red spots where she's broken skin. Bless her. I get eczema. Hope your LO gets well soon

FoxFoxSierra · 20/12/2018 23:29

It doesn't look like chicken pox to me, they are not blisters filled with fluid. Is he itchy? Any temp? Any mouth ulcers or spots on palms of hand or soles of feet? Is it on the surface of the skin or under it? Have you changed your washing powder or introduced a new food recently? Sorry for the million questions!

ShitStormInATeacup · 20/12/2018 23:30

I'm no doctor but it looks identical to when my DS has HF&M (confirmed with swabs). Was initially diagnosed as CP. Hope your LO is better soon.

EugenesAxe · 20/12/2018 23:30

Regarding biological washing powder by the way:

Guardian Article

I get contact dermatitis from several allergens; switched to bio after reading many things that said the link to skin irritation was a myth, as I was fed up getting a half-arsed clean, and I haven't looked back.

peppogirl · 20/12/2018 23:38

When my then 1 year only had chicken pox they looked identical to what yours has on the legs, he didn't have any on his tummy or back either just the legs (mainly the top) and his hands. So I would say chicken pox.

Puggles123 · 20/12/2018 23:41

It looks exactly like the eczema my brother used to have, controlled by emollients etc.

poppiesallykatie · 20/12/2018 23:42

I agree with hand, foot and mouth - looks exactly like when my child had it. Is it completely confined to the legs? How quickly did it appear? Chickenpox has very obvious blisters and an awesome need to itch in general, fever also. Hand, foot and mouth can be confined to just one area, in my child's case just the arms, then later just one spot at the mouth. Do his nails look normal, toes and feet because it can cause them to double peel in some cases. Is his temperature up?

Claudia1980 · 21/12/2018 00:14

Looks like chicken pox to me. My children didn’t get any on their back , only a couple of their tummies, but had them all over their arms and legs.

Sassenach85 · 21/12/2018 00:31

This doesn't look anything like when my DD had chicken pox, I'd personally rule that out.

Vampiratequeen · 21/12/2018 00:43

When my DD had chicken pox that's what they looked like. Some children don't get them everywhere, they only get them localised. A friend of my DD's only got them in localised areas and then caught it again the following year.

MrMeSeeks · 21/12/2018 01:06

I had cp, i hAd only a few on my stomach

MrMeSeeks · 21/12/2018 01:08

That though, are you sure it isn't scabies as it looks similar?

mmgirish · 21/12/2018 15:34

That looks like hfm to me!
