To wonder where I go from here? Just lost my job

I was fired yesterday. My boss is abroad on holiday, I thought he was so lovely and would at least tell you to your face. But no, he got a colleague to do it.

I've been let go. It just wasn't working out, I've been told.

I have no clue what to do. I feel so lost. How do I manage this?

Do people just take ANY job in this situation? I'm a PA, there aren't many of those roles around here. I'm learning to drive so I can't drive further afield yet. Public transport is rubbish here.

My baby is with a brilliant woman for his childminding needs. She's fab. I don't know what I'm going to do. I will have to double check the contract, but I suppose this means I'll be forking out money to pay her that we won't be benefiting from, since she probably has a notice period. I don't have the cash to do it. But I guess I'll have to find a way. He's coming on leaps and bounds since being there and is so social. Now he will be ripped away from his happy place.

Do I just suck it up and take any job that comes my way?

I'm so unbelievably shocked. I had a company car lined up, a very generous salary. Brand new work phone. And it's all gone down the drain. We now will have 0.

I honestly feel as if nothing will ever be good for me, not really. I had a good job lined up before this and that all fell through when the company decided they didn't have the funds to take me on.

Sorry, just need to rant at how unfair it all feels Sad

The first thing I would do is file for Unemployment Compensation (whatever the equivalent is there).

That is really shitty that he did this a week before Christmas. I'm so sorry.

loubluee · 20/12/2018 13:21

Sorry OP that sounds shit especially straight before Christmas.

To answer your question, yes take anything you can right now to pay the bills. You can carry on looking and applying whilst working, even from its stacking shelves or assistant work, secretary or cleaning, checkout or support worker. Anything! Something else will then come along. You are obviously skilled and experienced so it shouldn’t be too long!!

loubluee · 20/12/2018 13:21

Sorry how long was you employed for?

AGHHHH · 20/12/2018 13:22

This close to Christmas! He could have waited until after! Heartless cunt.

Sorry OP, little advice but perhaps you could get a temporary retail job over Christmas or pick up some cleaning jobs or something?

Dancer12345 · 20/12/2018 13:25

What’s the reason for being fired? There has to be a reason, they can’t just say it’s not working out. Are you still in a probation period?

losttheways · 20/12/2018 13:28

Thanks all, nice to feel so supported on here Thanks

I was only there 6 weeks. Every day, I would have practically 0 to do. Nothing. I would ask someone else if they needed help. It was always a no.

Apart from the odd flight booking or hotel accommodation, there was 0 to do. I felt terrible just wasting time twiddling my thumbs.

He was always praising me so I'm very shocked.

The reason his international PA gave was "it just wasn't working out". Then he said how there was so little to do that our boss realised he could just take on the extra himself without having me there to do it.

He also said people had said some stuff to him. I didn't ask what. I was the most polite and courteous colleague I could be. The only pickle I had was just before my boss went on holiday, he asked me why I was so smiley, overly polite and unsure of myself. He said I needed to be far more assertive.

I don't really know what he means. I'm always on the ball, and there was nobody I came into conflict with to be assertive to.

Everything was painfully slow paced.

But I'm so shocked because he was so lovely and always talked about ensuring the company car from the previous PA (who left the country), was ready for me when I passed my test. Always kept on about how he always had the best people around him and I'm one of them.

I just don't understand it. I'm worried about taking a Xmas temp role in retail. Won't any future employers for a PA role wonder why I went into retail? Would they not prefer a clean sheet of PA employment history? Xmas Blush

I'm sorry this happened

The best thing to do is keep your childcare in place and go into and phone all the employment agencies in your area give them your cv and immediately availability

They might have holiday cover or something to keep you going until something else comes along.

They can put you forward for several jobs a day rather than you trying to seek out these positions.

Good luck

CallMeRachel · 20/12/2018 13:33

You don't need to put any retail or gap til jobs on your cv, sometimes it's better not to as it can 'de-value' a cv

No employer will know you worked in Asda unless you tell them. Otherwise you say you've been out looking for suitable work

JollyAndBright · 20/12/2018 13:33

You were only there 6 weeks.

What were you doing before that?

CallMeRachel · 20/12/2018 13:35

It sounds as if your boss trusts his team implicitly and a couple of them have had doubts about you for whatever reason.

Unfair yes, comes back to if your face fits or not. You don't want to be working with shitty people anyway Thanks

Won't me covering up a retail job and saying I was out looking for something suitable come unstuck? The P45 for example that you have to hand in sometimes

Jolly Before that I was on maternity leave, and my old job was working for two consultants at a London hospital

You don’t have to get retail work. If you have worked in the before NHS sign up to NHS professionals and take some medical work on of some kind in admin.

Vampiratequeen · 20/12/2018 13:40

My advise, take the first job you can get, then whilst you are earning money look for a better job.

Punto1 · 20/12/2018 13:43

I'm in a similar pickle. I have sunk into a depression. I'm vowing that once Christmas is over, I'll just start applying again. Also a PA, but I left my job because there was the sum total of zero to do. I was bored out of my brains. They have replaced me (Why?) lol, despite me citing my reason for leaving as literally having nothing to do. In terms of CV, just say that it was a temporary position.

SometimesMaybe · 20/12/2018 13:44

Get signed up with agencies straight away, keep your childcare in place and get some temp work until you get something permanent. Even if you do some retail work for a few weeks it won’t go against you (it makes you look like you are a hard worker!) but with your experience you will get temp office work no problem.

HollowTalk · 20/12/2018 13:48

Doesn't the NHS have a bank system for admin staff?

I think an employer would prefer you to work somewhere doing anything than sit around waiting. I would explain it in that way.

What about temp agencies?

whystay · 20/12/2018 13:48

That's horrible. And it sounds like you're probably better off out of there if that's how they treat employees. Get down to your benefits office and start claiming job seekers allowance. It's not a lot but should help cover some of the childcare costs at least. I'd get some agency work sorted out for now while you look for something more permanent.

Limensoda · 20/12/2018 13:53

There has to be a reason, they can’t just say it’s not working out
I'm afraid they can when you've only been there a few weeks.
From what info you have given there doesn't seem to have been a reason until now, suddenly...So,..I'm wondering if you are attractive and his wife/partner has seen you..Grin

areyoubeingserviced · 20/12/2018 13:56

Agree with getting signed up with agencies
If you are pro active, you will feel much better I know it’s Christmas, but start ringing around today and tomorrow.
Keep the childcare in place for a few weeks to give you time to focus on getting a new job
Hopefully, you will get a job that you enjoy and that will fulfill you.
Sometimes the best things happen after difficult times
Best of luck

Shazafied · 20/12/2018 14:00

Op you need to sign on for any benefits straight away, plus join loads of agencies. There has to be nhs admin jobs around ?

19lottie82 · 20/12/2018 14:04

YY to registering with recruitment agencies, there’s always PA temp roles, or admin jobs, to fill IME

Justaboy · 20/12/2018 14:08

Just comiserating thats a hsit thing ti have happen just before Xmas I often wonder if the chinless wonders ever have that crappy event inflicted on them?.

Hope you find a decent employer of get some agency work and soon:)

Pachyderm1 · 20/12/2018 14:09

No employer is going to negatively judge you for taking a temporary job to pay bills so don’t worry about that.

It sounds like there wasn’t enough work to justify hiring you - they should never have taken you on in the first place, it’s so unfair. Have you been given redundancy pay?

rosealltheway · 20/12/2018 14:11

OP- where you are based?
