To wonder where I go from here? Just lost my job

I was fired yesterday. My boss is abroad on holiday, I thought he was so lovely and would at least tell you to your face. But no, he got a colleague to do it.

I've been let go. It just wasn't working out, I've been told.

I have no clue what to do. I feel so lost. How do I manage this?

Do people just take ANY job in this situation? I'm a PA, there aren't many of those roles around here. I'm learning to drive so I can't drive further afield yet. Public transport is rubbish here.

My baby is with a brilliant woman for his childminding needs. She's fab. I don't know what I'm going to do. I will have to double check the contract, but I suppose this means I'll be forking out money to pay her that we won't be benefiting from, since she probably has a notice period. I don't have the cash to do it. But I guess I'll have to find a way. He's coming on leaps and bounds since being there and is so social. Now he will be ripped away from his happy place.

Do I just suck it up and take any job that comes my way?

I'm so unbelievably shocked. I had a company car lined up, a very generous salary. Brand new work phone. And it's all gone down the drain. We now will have 0.

I honestly feel as if nothing will ever be good for me, not really. I had a good job lined up before this and that all fell through when the company decided they didn't have the funds to take me on.

Sorry, just need to rant at how unfair it all feels Sad

'recitation' wtf review
Bloody autocorrect bastards

moredoll · 20/12/2018 21:22

OP - can you phone HR at the hospital and ask? They MUST use temp staff, even if it’s an external temp agency.

^This.
Also think Indeed is very good for showing which jobs are available in your area.

This in Luton, from Indeed.

Does Bedford Hospital or another hospital near you have the bank? There's usually a lot of admin roles available especially with the high turnover of staff currently. The bank staff in my hospital are in high demand currently.

DiamondMine1 · 20/12/2018 21:57

I’ve been there OP. Almost exactly the same thing happened to me. I’d never been sacked before in my life, it was so humiliating and unfair.

I signed up to about 7 different temp agencies and HOUNDED them every day, and I do mean I had to hound them, anyway, I got temp admin work pretty quickly whilst I applied for other jobs in my field. I was only in the job I got sacked from for 4 weeks so tbh, I just told my new employer (the one after the temp) that I’d taken a couple of months out, I went to Oz for 6 weeks lol and then temped for a couple of weeks until I found this job. They didn’t know!

But honestly with temp agencies you really do have to hound them. All of them do permanent vacancies as well, and a lot of Admin and PA stuff too so definitely sign up and keep on their backs, at least twice a week or they’ll forget about you!

I phoned my local hospital this morning, it's a switch board operator and she spindles very confused. I just asked to be put through to someone who deals with Bank staff Hmm

What does your contract say about your notice period? You need to ensure you are paid your notice. As PP said, a minimum of a week. Make sure you get it!

DianaT1969 · 21/12/2018 08:33

OP, why did you mention bank staff to the switchboard operator? Ask for HR.
Try Secs in the City website. Lots of jobs on there usually, hopefully some are near you. Can your partner's income cover the childminder for a couple of months?

LakieLady · 21/12/2018 08:58

That's a really shitty thing to have happened, especially at this time of year.

There's an admin job at Beds hospital: medical records assistant www.bedfordhospital.nhs.uk/working-here/vacancies/ . A step down from what you were doing before, for sure, but it's in the right sort of environment for you.

A couple of people have advised you to claim benefits straight away, but I'd wait until you get your final payment from your previous employer before you do that. Do a benefit check first, using entitledto or turn2us, You may not be eligible for means tested benefits, if so, you should be eligible for "new-style JSA", which will be £73.10 a week.

If you would be entitled to more under Universal Credit, don't start a claim until you have received your final payment from your last job. If you start to claim now, and then get some money from your last job, it will count as income in your first UC period, and that will probably wipe out all the UC you would otherwise be entitled to.

Life really is mean. My DS has just come down with bloody chicken pox.

I'm suppose to be handing in my work phone and fob today. Not really sure what to do. I informed the person I was handing them back to last night, that he had chicken pox. But hopefully I would get someone to sit with him whilst I popped to the office.

However, that person is now ill themselves and cannot do it. So I'm stuffed.

I really don't think it's fair to take a contagious child out like this. But I feel like I have 0 choice

Someone just rang. He's a senior recruitment man. He's keen to meet with me and put me on his books for January.

He said he doesn't just represent anyone and has rung because I'm worth his time BlushGrin

@losttheways - if it's a short trip, do you have a neighbour who could look after him with him plonked in front of a couple of films with snacks and drinks?

nicelyneurotic · 21/12/2018 11:03

I'm sorry this has happened to you. What a shock.
Wanted to add that I manage a team of specialists. If I interviewed someone who had taken a short term retail job I would be impressed, if anything, at their work ethic.

Good luck.

If you are in London or a commutable distance, check out the Sky Women in Tech programme. It is brilliant. Teaches women to code and after the training, offers jobs. Plus - it is a FANTASTIC place to work. A lot of women are nervous to learn coding because they feel out of place or that it is a million miles from where they are. This programme starts from scratch. Been there 3 years and couldn't be happier.
If you aren't in London, check out TechMums started by the brilliant Dr. Sue Black OBE. Similar idea.

Sparklesocks · 21/12/2018 13:47

ComtesseDeSpair great news about the the agent that sounds promising! I would continue to look though as recruiters can sometimes talk the talk to get you on their books but fall through when push comes to shove.

Sparklesocks · 21/12/2018 13:49

Sorry that should’ve been to lostheways - I had the other username copied from my last reply on another thread - doh!

TheProvincialLady · 21/12/2018 14:48

The NHS still does use external agency staff. I hire them all the time myself. It probably comes down to individual organisations and their policies.

OP I wish you huge luck.

losttheways · 21/12/2018 17:37

Updated the person from work. Their reply to the text I sent as suggested from you lot was could I just do it quickly in the morning
