Possible discrimination at work - AIBU?

I work in a school as a teacher. Posh xmas do involves all staff being put up in hotel over night as well as all the booze, food, fanfare etc I cannot attend do as i have small children.

  1. No gift/gift voucher arrives in lieu of my attendance
  2. No xmas bonus at all
  3. All staff not attending are expected to do chores around the school and stay later than those attending the party (just 2 of us)
  4. Jobs included, but not limited to: painting walls, tidying office, sorting every other teachers room out
  5. With one working day left from now until when i start in Jan 2019 i must still plan, mark and do various admin work us teachers do.

(This is not a post about pitying teachers it can be applicable across all sectors)

My quarrel is, should me and my non-party-attending colleague have been given something as a thank you for all our hard work as all other employees get a party? And, is the expectation for us to work for longer as a result of our non attendance fair?

Any stories of unfairness like this seen? Please share!!

Loving all the responses. And yes, discrimination is too big a word for sure.

I am mostly bothered by the staying late after everyone else leaves for the party and have been given jobs i feel are team jobs. No need to contact unoins or governing bodies!

Just feeling very disheartened about entire approach this time of year. I have 2 small kids, a mother whom i care for and a husband who is up at 4.30am for work- there is no childcare available and the party location is farrrrrr from work so no chance of coming back on last train etc.

Anyway, i suppose all practices and experiences are different for all workplaces but i just feel very deflated after a crazy year in a very exhausting job.

One company I worked for took staff abroad for a weekend.
I didn’t go as I was heavily pregnant. I definitely didn’t expect the cash instead! It’s a team bonding experience and I chose to decline due to personal circumstances!

Notacluethisxmas · 20/12/2018 22:05

Margaret your hubby is definitely wrong. 100%.

Besides which the OP says she can't go because of her husband's working hours. Not the kids

Dotty1970 · 20/12/2018 22:11

Contact the union.... Hopefully your in one

Nicknacky · 20/12/2018 22:12

What will the union do?!

biggidybon · 20/12/2018 22:59

You aren't working longer though. You are just working your contracted hours. You were offered a party with option of leaving work earlier but you chose not to go. You can't decide to just go home earlier instead. Work contracted hours or leave work early as a treat to attend a party. Everyone had same choice.

Dotty1970 · 21/12/2018 02:29

Probably f*ck all

Redglitter · 21/12/2018 03:33

Hardly a union matter though

Notacluethisxmas · 21/12/2018 05:53

The union are going to say 'and......what?'

At the end of the day the OP isn't going because her husband can't get the next day off work.

Expecting money instead of a party is beyond unreasonable. It's ridiculous.

MrsSchadenfreude · 21/12/2018 06:02

There are these marvellous people called babysitters- could you use one of these for the evening? (Assuming no SN or any other valid reason.)

faithinthesound · 21/12/2018 06:13

Bit of a drip feed that OP's mother whom she cares for didn't appear until OP had been roundly roasted by most for thinking having kids meant she was being discriminated against...

MrPostman · 21/12/2018 13:04

@faithinthesound i didn't really feel it relevant i think it's the tasks i was given BUT i am being ABU as i have learned, hence the question mark in the title.

I do feel very deflated by my job but maybe this feeling i have is to do with how unhappy i am overall there. It's a hard job with pay that doesn't match and a nice end to the term is not a big ask but i feel i have missed that.

Thanks for contributions. I think, more than anything, it has solidified my feelings towards the job and that maybe i shouldn't be there if i cannot see reason over a subject like this. Cos i am still annoyed by it but can't defend it as much (still a lot) but not as much.

Merry Merry everyone!
