Has anyone done it?

Hate the space it takes up in the kitchen !

Tell them you use a bain marie, for some reason it tends to shut them up. No idea why.

Thesearmsofmine · 19/12/2018 20:11

I weaned three children without a microwave.

Ohyesiam · 19/12/2018 20:12

I’ve never had a microwave, I have several children. They are very tall, so something must have worked.

PerfectPeony · 19/12/2018 20:13

We didn’t have a microwave for years after our old one blew up but since being on mat leave I relented and got a new one.

Not just for the baby purée (bit scared to try blw yet) but actually found it’s so much easier for heating leftovers for lunch. Much less washing up.

I’m sure you could cope without it, but for me, when you have a baby convenience wins. Smile

MrsPinkCock · 19/12/2018 20:14

Yes of course!

I didn’t own a microwave until I was mid 20s Blush we just grew up without one!

DD was weaned without one no problem!

DappledThings · 19/12/2018 20:16

I never pureed anything. But I use microwave a lot for defrosting and heating batch cooked portions of meals. It's handy, it's not a necessity.

adviceonthepox · 19/12/2018 20:16

A bowl and boiling water from a kettle! Put the pot in that a check the temp before feeding no need for a microwave

Oddsocksandmeatballs · 19/12/2018 20:18

Didn't own a microwave, have two adult children who are no longer breast fed and can eat solid food so I must've managed to wean them somehow. You will be fine.

Reccy2018 · 19/12/2018 20:21

I am currently weaning without one. I freeze purees in ice cube trays and then defrost in a saucepan on the hob as needed. It's fine, don't panic. And ignore the rude responses here too

Looneytune253 · 19/12/2018 20:22

I dont think I’ve ever used a microwave for weaning and struggling to see why one would be necessary???

Sew3stitch · 19/12/2018 20:22

A little bit off topic but those who warmed food in hot water - is this to piping hot? I was told anything frozen had to be heated to piping before allowing to cool to give to baby. I found this frustrating for taking homemade food out so was I being over cautious?!

In answer to the OP, I did use a microwave for convenience but don’t think it’s essential at all.

Sashkin · 19/12/2018 20:23

DS won’t eat hot food. That includes things that are “hot” as in “tepid”. He is weaned. We have a microwave but don’t use it for his food...

Fatted · 19/12/2018 20:25

My parents are almost 70 years old and have managed that entire time without ever having a microwave. They also successfully raised 4 kids without one.

Even now I have one, I still cook a lot of things the old fashioned way cos that's how I was brought up.

newmun · 21/12/2018 20:20

Thank you everyone. Happy that i dont have to rush to get one just yet. On crappy maternity pay 🤣

both my kids from 6 months had what ever the adults were having just mashed up to begin with then normal eating(with hands mostly)

Stompythedinosaur · 21/12/2018 21:37

I just fed the dc what we were having from the outset, there's no need to do purees if you don't want to. If you do want to, there are other ways to warm then.

Crunchymum · 21/12/2018 21:44

Wouldn't have needed a microwave for my older 2 kids (did BLW) but youngest is NG tube fed and we are currently weaning with puree.

I make ice cube trays full and pop out what I need on a meal by meal basis, the microwave is really useful (although not essential as I could defrost what I need with a little planning!)

I'd be BLW with this baby too, if she didn't have special needs.

Wallsbangers · 21/12/2018 21:57

I've used ours more since we started weaning than in the previous 4 years we've owned it. If it broke I'd replace it tomorrow.

TheDarkPassenger · 21/12/2018 22:06

I didn’t have a microwave or toaster until my youngest daughter was 2 :)

Life is much easier with them though!

zeeboo · 21/12/2018 22:23

Wtf?? Baby eats what you eat minus salt and spices. Do these people expect that you microwave all your food???

LaurieMarlow · 21/12/2018 22:45

Of course it's not necessary, but I use mine a lot to heat leftovers that I've frozen.

It's a system that works well for me.

BunsOfAnarchy · 21/12/2018 22:49

Dafuq?

I did BLW.
I dont think ive usef the microwave in over a year too. You definitely do not need it

RockingAroundTheChristmasTree1 · 21/12/2018 22:51

I have never used the microwave for weaning foods?! I give them what we have (I don't use salt in cooking anyway)
And food pouches, I just put them in hot water to take the edge off..but DS2 is teething so absolutely loves them really cold out of the fridge at the moment

Mercier1 · 21/12/2018 22:55

I did it.used a little pot for steaming or reheating but mainly did BLW

HerSymphonyAndSong · 21/12/2018 22:58

Like any food preparation it’s not necessary but it may be handy. I am doing BLW and do use the microwave for reheating things for us for lunch quickly, but I would easily manage without
