Christmas card disagreement

abacucat · 18/12/2018 15:44

DP and I were finishing writing Christmas cards last night. We did cards that we were giving out to people by hand. DP said that we had to give different cards to people who would be opening the cards at the same time. He said if a friend saw we had given another friend the same Christmas card, that that was rude. It showed we had not thought about what card we would give to them. I thought DP was just over thinking all this.

ravenmum Do people in Germany give birthday cards, and would you open them in front of the person? Just wondered if there was a difference.

Thentherewascake · 18/12/2018 17:50

I don't get the point of cards in this country to be honest. most of them just seem to have some variant of:

to xxx
love from xxxx

what's the bloody point of that? No news, no nothing, you might as well just stamp them to save time.

Smidge001 · 18/12/2018 17:52

I'm with your DP and would try my best to mix up the cards that will be opened at the same time or are likely to be seen by the same people.

Satsumaeater · 18/12/2018 17:56

My dh and I disagree on this too. I open a pack and work through them and then open the next one. If two people who know each other get the same card so be it. DH disagrees and opens all the packets to send everyone different cards.

Multi-design packs are the way forward. If anyone is still sending Christmas cards by next year, that is.

GraceMarks · 18/12/2018 17:56

Christ on a bike. I made my cards this year. I used a linocut so obviously the cards all came out the same. Are you really telling me that there are some people who will be mortally offended that I didn't carve a different block for each card?

Ohyesiam · 18/12/2018 17:57

He must have lots of space in his mind to think through such things.

Satsumaeater · 18/12/2018 17:58

I remember a thread where posters where offended, mortally offended if someone was rude and thoughtless enough to give them a card FROM A MULTI-PACK

I have to get my mum a specific Mum card, she would be offended if she got one from a multipack. It is a pain but I indulge her (also means getting a "nana" card from ds too).

Merryoldgoat · 18/12/2018 17:59

All this thought into a Christmas card?!

itscalledwineflu · 18/12/2018 18:09

Your husband clearly has too much time on his hands to think such ridiculous things Hmm

clary · 18/12/2018 18:12

Wow. Well I sent five cards this year. Tbh I have never seen the point of cards to people you are seeing, I just wish them happy Christmas.

But what is amazing me here is that people send two cards to the same house! What's that about? One for the wife and another for the husband?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 18/12/2018 18:12

I think this needless angst over a bloody bit of card is part of the reason why fewer people are writing them. I don’t give a shit if Someone didn’t send me a card last year or gave me the same design this year as last year, or if I have a smaller card than my colleague. It’s not the spirit of Christmas to worry about offending someone over something so trivial, I would hate to think that some people were worrying about ANY of my cards.

Therr are more important things to worry about at Christmas, I think.

HopeGarden · 18/12/2018 18:45

This is just silly.

Everybody knows that multipacks contain multiple copies of the same card. Unless you go and buy a stack of individual cards (and anyone doing that has far too much time and money on their hands) then you’re going to be giving the same card to more than one person. I’m astonished that anyone would actually be offended by this.

The furthest I go is avoiding overly religious cards for people I know to be atheists.

HopeGarden · 18/12/2018 18:49

But what is amazing me here is that people send two cards to the same house! What's that about?

My parents sent us 4 cards this year. One for me and DH, and one for each of the DC. Even the toddler, who doesn’t care less about cards because he’s a toddler.

clary · 18/12/2018 19:44

Hope garden do they send them separately ie four stamps?

SleepySofa · 19/12/2018 06:45

I buy a few boxes of different cards each year, and there are usually some left over from previous years, so every year a mixture goes out. I do try to make sure that if I send one to my cousin and one to my auntie, they’re different. This year we also had a pack of cards from DS’s preschool with a design he’d done (snowmen handprints type of thing) so all the neighbours on our Close got one of those. Usually that kind of thing would be sent to adoring relatives but they arrived from preschool too late this year as I’d already written the family ones.

So I get where he’s coming from, BUT I wouldn’t be offended or expect others to be offended by duplicates, so I think he’s overthinking.

SleepySofa · 19/12/2018 06:49

I’m gulity if overthinking though so I do understand! Like a previous poster, I make sure overtly religious ones don’t go to staunch atheists, and I like to send the artier ones to my uncle with a degree in Art History or my auntie who always sends really tasteful cards to us... and I do send the ones I like best to the people I like best! My mum was the same.

TimeForDinnerDinnerDinner · 19/12/2018 08:07

YANBU How bloody ridiculous.

ravenmum · 19/12/2018 12:56

@ImportantWater The same: you might post a card if you weren't going to see them, otherwise you just say it to them. There aren't as many nice cards available, and anything that's not the standard size costs more to send - there's no tradition so nothing is really geared up to it.

ImportantWater · 19/12/2018 13:17

That's interesting ravenmum thank you - I like hearing about how things are done elsewhere!

AGHHHH · 19/12/2018 13:19

Eh I buy a box of cards, if they're offended that they're the same then that's on them for being so ridiculous!
