I used to use one myself but I looked at her in there in day like a little prisoner and I just thought No!!! Ready to be flamed but there you go Smile

They have their benefits if used correctly.

SinglePringle · 18/12/2018 10:34

Ddog actively goes and pits himself to bed in his at night. No command, locked doors etc. He loves it.

DonaldDucksTowel · 18/12/2018 10:34

YABU
Our dog is very nervous and anxious and her crate is her safe space where she goes to be calm when things get too much for her
We didn’t have one for her first few months but she’s a much happier dog now we have one

steff13 · 18/12/2018 10:34

Our dog loves her crate. It's her safe space.

Oopsy41 · 18/12/2018 10:37

I use a crate but agree they could be used incorrectly. My dog loves her crate which we call her bed, she goes into it quite happily when we go out. The door is left open all the time when we are there and she comes and goes as she pleases then the door is shut when we go out

KevinTheYuccaPlant · 18/12/2018 10:39

My spaniel loves hers, she'll take herself in there for a bit of peace and quiet (they've got blankets over the top, so it's her own little cave). The collie rarely goes in his. Doors are always open for them so they can choose.

Cavort · 18/12/2018 10:40

We used to shut our dog in his crate overnight as a puppy, but once he got older and no longer needed it we had to keep the crate as he chose to spend so much time in there.

Squatternutbosh123 · 18/12/2018 10:42

My dog loves hers, sleeps in at night and will take herself off in there during the day. She has memory foam mattresses, pillows and toys...I'd spend time in there too if I could fit

Squatternutbosh123 · 18/12/2018 10:43

It's also got a proper crate cover on it

ShadyLady53 · 18/12/2018 10:51

YABU.

Think of it as their own little doggie bedroom. It’s a place that is their’s only where they can go when they need to rest up and chill out.

taratill · 18/12/2018 10:54

YABU dog crates are safe spaces and if you take the dog away and the crate with you the dog will settle much more easily.
Our old girl practically lives in her crate these days. Not cruel at all so long as the dog is allowed out and to exercise etc.

bellinisurge · 18/12/2018 10:54

I used one for my rescue kitten to give her a safe space to go back to as she slowly explored the room it was in then the house (door left open to the cage but not the room it was in to start with) She still loves the room it was in. Had no trouble getting her to eat, drink and poop in a different area once she had found her feet. It's in the garage folded up.

PoshPenny · 18/12/2018 11:02

I used to think like that until I started to use one with our last puppy as a way of reducing stimulation when he got obnoxious because he was over excited and needed a nap and also for his own safety whilst travelling. He loves it now aged 6 , it's his sanctuary.

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 18/12/2018 11:09

Yes, YABVU.

They're an excellent training method and in most cases, when used correctly, dogs like them. People who say they are cruel, or like "jail" clearly have never looked into their benefits or used one themselves.

GemmeFatale · 18/12/2018 11:10

It’s a tool. You can use it correctly or incorrectly. Personally I think used right they’re a wonderful tool. My pup loves his. But if it’s not working for you and your dog then use another option.

Schuyler · 18/12/2018 11:13

YABU. My dog is an old man and takes himself off to his crate for a snooze. He doesn’t need it for training purposes but he loves it. I made it into a den. It’s covered in blankets (obviously not over the entrance) and inside, there’s a thick cushion and loads of soft blankets. I think he enjoys the warm and snuggles in there. I want to get rid because I think it’s unsightly in my house Blush but he does use it a lot.

ShiningSally · 18/12/2018 11:14

Our ddog loves theirs, she often goes in there for a snooze

Dottierichardson · 18/12/2018 11:14

I hate them too, it's no different from caging, people think calling it a crate makes it something else but it really isn't. Have had dogs for 12 years and my partner for double that, never used one, never needed to...The house is the dog's she sleeps where she wants, and roams around the house just like any other member of the family, as did my older dog. I can see it's an unpopular view not to have one from the other posters, have noticed that crate users get rather rabid in defending them perhaps because on some level they're aware that it's an unnecessary restriction that is more about human convenience and lack of proper training/bonding than it is about the dog's welfare, my house is my dog's safe space.

MakeAHouseAHome · 18/12/2018 11:18

YANBU. They are cruel. Why do people have a dog if they are going to stick it in a cage...

SinglePringle · 18/12/2018 11:22

MakeaHouse have you read any of the replies aboveConfused?

Our dog puts himself in his crate at night, it’s huge and comfy. His space. Rest of the time, he has the run of the house and never gets ‘put’ in his crate. If we’re out and he’s at home, he still has the run of the house.

How is that cruel?

Sweeping statements are ridiculous in any discussion.

Ticcinalong · 18/12/2018 11:24

I hated the thought of them too until I got a rescue dog who would gnaw the house apart in a state of anxiety. As part of his learning to feel safe and calm a crate became his den. He used it to go in with a kong and have some relaxation and quiet time to decompress it also meant he was safe from the dangers of electric cables etc should I not be able to supervise for a short while.
I wouldn’t hesitate to reccomend as a safe place for a puppy to sleep. I would however hate for them to be used all day like a doggy jail.
My crate dog is now old and calm and still goes in to the crate to sleep through choice and have a kong away from the other dogs Grin.

MakeAHouseAHome · 18/12/2018 11:25

Yes I have read the replies. They are for people who can't be bothered to properly train their dogs as puppies, and/or who don't want them to be a genuine part of the family.

Reason dogs will put themselves in the cage is because that is where they were put as puppies so of course it feels safe to them.

However if they hadn't been locked in a cage as puppies it wouldn't be their go to place.

DonaldDucksTowel · 18/12/2018 11:27

Can’t be bothered to train our dogs because we use crates??
So you think the dogs are either feral and running around shitting everywhere or in the crate?
Are you being deliberately obtuse or are you just a bit stupid?

MakeAHouseAHome · 18/12/2018 11:30

No... that is not what I said at all. Maybe learn to read. Do you think training only involves toilet training!?

starcrossedseahorse · 18/12/2018 11:32

I will never use a crate and I have had very many dogs, rescue and otherwise. I am heavily involved in rescue work and I do know trainers that will use crate training, but I also know that they concerned about how crates are being used by some dog owners who seem to think that they are essential. They are not.

They are for human convenience and are very badly abused by some people - not all I hasten to add. Some keep their dogs locked in whilst they are at work and overnight too - this is abuse pure and simple.

Those people above who say that their dog goes to their crate to be quiet and sleep - my dogs do that too. On their beds.
