Homeless people in Hull who were set to stay in hotel rooms over Christmas have had their booking cancelled.

Carl Simpson, founder of the Raise the Roof Homeless Project, told the BBC he paid £1,092 for 14 twin rooms at the Royal Hotel in Hull, part of the Britannia Hotels group.

I think this is a sad case of there being no winners.

I know someone (Very well) who works with the homeless all year. There are night shelters for anyone who wants them but because a lot of them are 'dry' shelters they don't take up the offer. I understand that bigger cities wouldn't have the same. More money needs to go to address the root of the problem.

Yes, I really hope that the charity will use all the extra donations they’re getting as a result of this publicity to address longer term issues, and aren’t just putting it in the bank to pay for future one off hotel rooms. It’s a complicated issue and there are no easy answers.

An update for anyone who cares - the men and women will now stay at the Hilton Doubletree.

Just as an aside, please don't think this is a one-off act from Mr Simpson and his charity - he works his arse off all year round for the homeless of Hull. Even his cafe is a fundraising venture.

That's good to know so other customers are aware and can decide if they still want to stay there.

Bombardier25966 l agree with you 100% on this.

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal What an amazing thing to do. lt's shameful that we need people like him in this day and age, but thank goodness for it.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 18/12/2018 12:06

Once again that's a fair point, Wilburforce, but I wonder what happens if someone's booked on a non-refundable basis?

liverbird10 · 19/12/2018 00:29

OP - YADNBU. I'm surprised and sad that so many think you are.

BlackForestCake · 19/12/2018 00:52

I've stayed in a Britannia hotel. I’d rather spend the night in the bus station than do it again.
