To be shocked I'm not getting the minimal wage?

So some of you might have seen my previous post.
Anyway in a nutshell, I have been interviewing for several job. I received an offer last Thursday but still waiting to hear back from my last job interview (it's the job I really would like!) and should hear back from them by Wednesday.
I have been unemployed for 5 months and it's been incredibly hard so I decided to accept the job I had offered on Thursday and withdraw if I get the job I would really like! I know it's not fair but I need to secure myself and in my previous post people reassured me that it happens all the time and I shouldn't feel bad.
Anyhow I was just about to accept the job when I realised the pay is under the minimum wage.
I would get £6.66 net (£7.40 gross) per hour. I understand the minimum hourly rate is 7.83 gross?

The truth is I need a job. There is the dream job I need to hear back from and there is this one which is 'a job'
Emotionally I'm drained and will be financially too soon if I don't get something

Thats illegal i would contact them and tell them that they are offering below leagl minimum wage and you would have to work over 30 hours a week to pay tax so should be full pay per hour in your wages

They can't legally pay you under minimum wage. Perhaps they made a mistake with your age group?

Have you asked them why they're not paying the NMW? How was the pay advertised, or did you only find out after they offered you the job? If you're just over 25, is it possible they've miscalculated your age from your DOB? The NMW for 21-25 is £7.38 (i.e. very close to your offer) which makes me wonder if they've just made a mistake?

10% isn't a tax rate so where is that going?
Seems to be a lot more than a minimum wage violation going on looking at it. Are you technically going to be self employed by any chance?

I suspect this is even dodgier when you get into it. At that rate, they can't declare you for tax properly which makes going for your next job even harder. If you have any other option, I'd take that instead.

Ask them why they're paying below the NMW then report them.
Some employers are cheeky enough to pay minimum wage but then make 'deductions' for ridiculous things.

Definitely not self employed! It's for a fairly well know company with over 15 branches in the U.K. The salary wasn't advertised in the ad. I asked the question on my interview and they said they don't know (I know right massive red flag but as I said before I need a job)

Could it be that you don't get paid for lunch/breaks and you haven't taken that into account? I'm at work for 8.5 hours a day with an hour for lunch so I only get paid for 7.5 which means the hourly rate is a bit higher.

I would ask them in writing to clarify the wage as what they have stated is below minimum wage. If they are a large company it is likely they follow the law, and this was a typo/ error based on them listing the pay for under 25s by mistake. If they are knowingly paying below minimum wage on purpose then you can consider reporting them.

If they are definitely paying below minimum wage you have to ask yourself if it's wise to work for an exploitative employer. It won't stop there. Most decent employers strive to pay the living wage as they recognise the value of their people.

If you need the job and don’t want to piss them off I’d contact them and kinda play dumb. “ hi, got my contRact though, think there’s been an error, the wage is wrong, it should be “£x.xx as I’m over 25. If you could get it amended and pop a copy in the post I’ll get it sent straight back to you”

@DontCallMeCharlotte is right. I deducted 2 1/2 hours (30 minutes every day for lunch break) and now it all adds up.
They didn't mention anything about lunch breaks being paid/not paid on the interview🙄 It's a big company but it's a shite company loads of bad reviews on google and I worked for a competitor of theirs and honestly they don't have a good reputation. But what can I do?! I need a job! Fingers crossed I have good new from the dream job I interviewed for on Tuesday!

Errr op has just clarified that she originally included 30 mins paid lunch in her calculations, and has since clarified that she is not paid for lunch so is in fact on the appropriate minimum wage. Hmm

By the way it's perfectly normal to not get paid for lunch.

My lunch breaks aren’t paid either. I work in a school so am a public sector employee. It’s perfectly legal if a bit tight-arsed.

Very normal not to be paid for breaks. But your contract should ideally state the number of hours you will be actually working as well as the times (e.g. 35 hours per week, 9-5 with a 1 hour unpaid break).
