To be shocked I'm not getting the minimal wage?

So some of you might have seen my previous post.
Anyway in a nutshell, I have been interviewing for several job. I received an offer last Thursday but still waiting to hear back from my last job interview (it's the job I really would like!) and should hear back from them by Wednesday.
I have been unemployed for 5 months and it's been incredibly hard so I decided to accept the job I had offered on Thursday and withdraw if I get the job I would really like! I know it's not fair but I need to secure myself and in my previous post people reassured me that it happens all the time and I shouldn't feel bad.
Anyhow I was just about to accept the job when I realised the pay is under the minimum wage.
I would get £6.66 net (£7.40 gross) per hour. I understand the minimum hourly rate is 7.83 gross?

Wwyd ?

I don't know anyone who gets paid for lunch breaks in any job they work at. Did you expect to get paid for your lunch break??

tryinganewname · 16/12/2018 21:08

Also agree it's normal to not be paid for lunch.. in public sector and paid for 7.5 hours a day - it's up to me if I take a lunch or not and for how long, as long as my 7.5 paid hours are done.

TillyMouse7 · 16/12/2018 21:11

No I wasn't expected to be paid for lunch!!
But the interview was very odd and they couldn't confirm the hourly rate and the working hours! It's not the right company to work for, my gut says RUN - yes with capitals but as I explained before I have been unemployed for 5 months and i need a job

Most places don’t pay for half an hour break. Some will pay half an hour of an hour lunch break but rare to find a job that pays any breaks now.

I work for two businesses one is a school and I get half hour lunch break which I rarely get to take and don’t get paid for that. And my part time job is at Waitrose where I work 5 hours again rarely get a break but get 15 minutes taken off my pay for my statutory break

www.gov.uk/rest-breaks-work

Workers have the right to one uninterrupted 20 minute rest break during their working day, if they work more than 6 hours a day. This could be a tea or lunch break.

The break doesn’t have to be paid - it depends on their employment contract.

Polarbearflavour · 16/12/2018 21:17

Ummmm it’s the law OP. Businesses can’t opt out.

Report them to ACAS. www.gov.uk/pay-and-work-rights

Accept it and keep looking for a better job. I'm relieved they are paying NMW though!

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 16/12/2018 21:30

Could it be a typo? Or an old contract used in error?

DontCallMeCharlotte · 17/12/2018 08:07

We'll I'm glad the mystery is solved. Fingers crossed you get the dream job and that 2019 is a better year for you Smile
