Don't kids get enough stuff on the 25th?

My nephews and niece now think it's their right to have gifts on the 24th as well.

Where does it end?

Yes I know AIBU!
Yes it's probably been done on here already in the last few weeks!

owning two pairs of pjs will not lead to the breakdown of society

DowntonCrabby · 16/12/2018 21:30

Meh, I wouldn’t do them or that creepy wee bastard EOTS but am very each to their own. Everyone makes their own traditions.

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 16/12/2018 21:31

So how long are your children wearing too short pajamas for because you are "timing them" ? You buy them throughout the year when they need them and another pair at Christmas because you've made it a tradition.

Fatted · 16/12/2018 21:32

I object to the idea of needing a special box to put it all in.

But my mum and dad let us open a small present each on Christmas eve and that was well over 30 odd years ago. It's nothing new. It's just been given a fancy name, and now people feel the need to take pictures of it and put it on social media.

No

I dont

Some people might I suppose...but I don't

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 16/12/2018 21:33

Its ok

purple has sorted it

I like that purple very decisive Grin

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 16/12/2018 21:34

We dont do stocking presents

Yeah i went there...

Come at me!!

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 16/12/2018 21:34

I'm joking

Just not about doing stocking presents

PearlandRubies194 · 16/12/2018 21:35

I have one, it contains pyjamas, sachet of hot chocolate, bath foam (squirty type) and a toy. My reasoning being that it’ll break the evening up a bit. She can squirt that foam to her heart’s content whilst I do some last minute wrapping!

LaurieMarlow · 16/12/2018 21:35

No time. Hmm

I usually buy the next size up when the winter stock comes in and hold a pair back for Christmas.

I assure you that this isn't a difficult or complicated thing to do. Nor are social services at my door because my children are inadequately clothed.

LaurieMarlow · 16/12/2018 21:37

Yeah, I don't bother with a box

Dongdingdong · 16/12/2018 21:38

YANBU OP. It’s a ridiculous and presumably relatively new tradition - I’m in my early 30s and never heard of such a thing when I was growing up (and until I joined Mumsnet). Kids these days are spoilt enough without having two sets of presents on two days running. It’s sad that we’ve lost the true meaning of what Christmas is all about. A couple I know are taking their kids to volunteer at a homeless shelter over Christmas - now that’s what the season should really be about IMO.

Amazonian27 · 16/12/2018 21:38

I agree OP it’s commercialism gone mad.
Fortunately neither the dreaded Elf on the Shelf or the Christmas Eve box were around when mine were little and believers.
It’s greed and commercialism gone absolutely mad.
The Elf on the Shelf seems to be used more for the yummy mummies to post on social media about how lovely their homes are and how creative they are when the DC are in bed with the Elf scenarios. Most children today get more than enough for Christmas if parents want to put things in a box for children they should maybe consider doing operation shoebox or similar donation to a local child in hospital or a hospice or whose parents live in poverty and frequent the food bank.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 16/12/2018 21:38

D'you what I dislike ?

People who say they "hate" .
I will hear this phrase :
"I HATE Christmas , it's too commercialised" at least twice a day in this upcoming week from my patients.
Usually it's "Do you like Christmas , I HATE Christmas..."
And I am meant to agree with them ?
Argue?
Ignore?
Say "Oh, I bloody love it can;'t wait" .. blardy blardy blah.

Many of my patients are on their own, so Christmas might be just another day , or very stressful or sad.
I usually just say "Oh, a lot of people do go OTT"

"Hate" is a strong emotion. Why waste the mental energy on hate? And even worse , why try to make other people feel bad for enjoying something?

LaurieMarlow · 16/12/2018 21:41

The homeless shelter near me is inundated with people volunteering at Christmas. What they really need (and have started to be clear about) are people volunteering in February.

TheBigBangRocks · 16/12/2018 21:42

Mine have always had new pjs, not Christmas themed so they can wear after. Surely most children have several pairs of pjs not just one.

Dongdingdong · 16/12/2018 21:43

@LaurieMarlow and I’m sure what they also need is people spending a whole load of unnecessary money on “Christmas Eve boxes” too. Not.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 16/12/2018 21:44

Yeah, FIL has been turned away from volunteering as it was already full

It surprised me but I suppose too many volunteers would just get in the way

Shame for him though as his wife died last year and he just wants to get out of the house

LaurieMarlow · 16/12/2018 21:46

I'm not sure it's anyone's business what people spend their money on, particularly if the people in question pay their taxes and donate to charity.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 16/12/2018 21:46

I dont think its one or the other dong

CheshireChat · 16/12/2018 21:53

I'm not a fan of donating extra/ volunteering just for Christmas- it feels a bit... Voyeuristic- 'look what the poor people live like'.
Maybe donating Christmas specific stuff though.

We do virtually everything a bit different Purplehairdontcare pokes tongue out

donajimena · 16/12/2018 21:53

Christmas pyjamas should be received Christmas day. To be worn after Christmas bath on Christmas day. In my world Grin

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 16/12/2018 21:56

dona

You make children wash on Christmas day

You monster!!

MissyCooper · 16/12/2018 21:58

I love Christmas Eve. Always have done. In many ways I prefer it to Christmas Day.

We do a basic Christmas Eve box. DH baths the girls while I clean and hoover the living room and the box is on the coffee table (having been delivered by an elf) when they come out.

They each get PJs, a Christmas book, a beanie boo and a new Christmas tree ornament to put on the tree.

We decided to do this instead of stockings.

I generally don’t care what other people do but must admit to finding these homemade advent calendars (little toy each day) to be a bit much. I have some colleagues who do this and it’s just utter tat from the pound shop but if you have two kids that’s another £50! I mean don’t they get enough shite?!

MissyCooper · 16/12/2018 22:00

This years Christmas box has a unicorn theme because they are both fucking obsessed with them Grin

I don’t usually theme my Christmas Eve boxes, for the record.
