To HATE the whole idea of Christmas Eve boxes

TeeJay1970 · 16/12/2018 19:40

Don't kids get enough stuff on the 25th?

My nephews and niece now think it's their right to have gifts on the 24th as well.

Where does it end?

Yes I know AIBU!
Yes it's probably been done on here already in the last few weeks!

Asked someone in the office what was in the box and the list was ENDLESS!!! Probably more than what I’d buy for Christmas Day. Plus all 3 of her DC got one each, all with a DVD. So do they watch all three films on Xmas eve?!

IHopeThisIsAGoodIdea · 16/12/2018 19:42

Christmas eve boxes can go hike off a cliff with elf on the shelf.

QueenNovo · 16/12/2018 19:43

Never done one, DD has plenty of PJs, doesn't like hot chocolate and there are loads of Christmas films on Netflix so never saw the point.

isseywithcats · 16/12/2018 19:43

i dont get when christmas eve boxes became the norm when my kids were young they were allowed to open one of their smaller presents on christmas eve but it came out of the pile that was for christmas day not extra presents

SuperVeggie · 16/12/2018 19:44

YANBU at all, I agree. But I expect you will get lots of replies saying "why do you care what other people do with their DC for Xmas" etc.

Stufftheturkeysholewithholly · 16/12/2018 19:44

What you hate others can love. I have been buying my kids presents for xmas eve long before this box business became a thing=. My reasoning has always been that they will be every bit as excited by what mum buys them as they are about what santa gets and then it will make the transition from believing to not believing that bit easier. As it happens mine now dont believe in the big man anymore but still love our christmas eve together opening the gifts from me to them and we make a whole night of it.

blackteasplease · 16/12/2018 19:44

I haven't been doing one. I did do an advent box but tbh it was all stuff I'd just have given them otherwise!

Don't do elf on he shelf.

MabelBee · 16/12/2018 19:44

I don't understand why we are suddenly trying to out-christmas Christmas. It was always magical before all this extra stuff.

JacquesHammer · 16/12/2018 19:44

I can’t get worked up about it. Don’t like it, don’t do it.

My DD always gets new PJs on Xmas Eve. Lovely tradition.

PositiveVibez · 16/12/2018 19:45

Why does it annoy you so much?

Christmas Eve boxes, as far as I am aware contain nothing more than a pair of pj's, hot chocolate and a Christmas movie/puzzle.

We got that as kids anyway, it's just that now it's put in a box.

I can't get myself worked up about how others celebrate the festive season, let alone 'HATE' it.

Chickychoccyegg · 16/12/2018 19:47

surely it's people's personal choice and what anyone else thinks about it is irrelevant, it's not like I'll say ok I won't buy them now because you don't like them let everyone just get on with what ever Christmas traditions make them happy, it literally makes no difference to your life who gets a Christmas eve box, just you do whatever you want and others will do the same

Girlicorne · 16/12/2018 19:47

Each to their own, I ve done it since the DC were tiny its jamas, hot chocolate, carrot for rudolph, reindeer dust, chocolate coins and a Christmas cuddly toy. They love it, it's one of our traditions. I don't care if anyone else does it or not!!

Ivegotthree · 16/12/2018 19:48

YANBU

Dreadful consumerism out of control

(And I bloody love Christmas and spend a fortune on presents but I do think this new pyjamas bollocks is out of control greed)

EnglishRose1320 · 16/12/2018 19:48

I never use to do one but my eldest ds has never believed in father Christmas, he has asd and one year we did it, got PJ's and new bowls for breakfast the next morning- eldest ds has the job of sneaking out and putting it on the doorstep, ringing the bell and then sneaking back in. He loves watching his younger brothers face light up, enjoying the magic without having to believe it. We also add a note about how the PJ's are so ds can go to bed quickly, works like a treat. We do however stick to just new PJ's and one other thing, this year it's a family board game. And they don't get PJ's the rest of the year so they need them.

Neverunderfed · 16/12/2018 19:49

Most people that I know that do them just have PJ's, a film/book, hot chocolate and a new bauble for tree or something. That doesn't seem overly extravagant? The elf can jump off a cliff though.

JacquesHammer · 16/12/2018 19:49

but I do think this new pyjamas bollocks is out of control greed

My DD tends to have her growth spurts in autumn. She needs new PJs...is that greed?

She’s still just about in last year’s pair although they’re a bit half-mast now Grin

FestiveNut · 16/12/2018 19:49

I think it's an awesome idea. Activity books etc to keep them from bubbling over with excitement all day. A tradition dvd. Doesn't have to be proper gifts.

MattBerrysHair · 16/12/2018 19:50

I have never ever heard of Xmas eve boxes! Has this been going on for a long time? Confused

notsurewhatshappening · 16/12/2018 19:51

It's so wasteful. Pyjamas worn for one night and then will be too small the next year. We have a box of Christmas books which gets brought down from the loft every year and any festive books they are given each year are added to the box. Same for tree decorations. Much nicer to have memories attached to things than throwaway stuff.

Bombaybunty · 16/12/2018 19:52

We've never done Santa, Christmas eve boxes, stockings or elf on a shelf.
Bah humbug rules!

JacquesHammer · 16/12/2018 19:52

Pyjamas worn for one night and then will be too small the next year

I don’t know anyone who would use a pair of PJs for one night!

MattBerrysHair · 16/12/2018 19:52

Pyjamas worn for one night and then will be too small the next year.

They're only worn once??

missfliss · 16/12/2018 19:52

Elves can do one.
We do a little Xmas eve box.

New PJs, hot chocolate and popcorn to snuggle up and watch a movie together.

Is that rampant consumerism gone mad?

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 16/12/2018 19:52

I keep seeing the 'new pjs!!!' Type comments

Do your children not grow?

Ive been doing a variation on this for about 17 years, and im another who doesnt get some of the vitriol it seems to attract

Dont like it...dont do it

I bet there is lots of stuff people do at Christmas that i think is dumb...i just dont tell them

LEMtheoriginal · 16/12/2018 19:52

Heres a thing. I dont see the point of them - so i dont do them.
