Her quotes made my blood boil. Silly woman.

She's standing by that disgusting cretin.

No, the conviction for rape won't be enough. Not when our profoundly unhelpful cultural narrative is that "rapists are monsters" rather than regular human beings with good and bad qualities and capable of making terrible decisions alongside good ones.

In that respect, you can hardly blame someone raised within that culture who would look at the man they know/think they know and conclude "well, he's not a monster, therefore I don't believe he's a rapist".

Maybe if we stopped talking about rapists as monsters things would start to change and women would be safer.

dworky · 16/12/2018 12:12

Do you write for The DailyMail? 'Let's not blame or hold accountable the rapist, instead find a woman we can direct anger toward'.

IchWill · 16/12/2018 12:21

@dworky what do you think? No.

As I've said in a PP, I'm angry with her (as well as that monster) as her comments twist the knife for the victim and undermine his conviction.

"her comments... undermine his conviction"

No they don't.

Do you really think people will read that and think "oho likely miscarriage of justice"???

She's out of order obviously but having an opinion and expressing it, in this instance, is not illegal.

What he did is highly illegal.

Do you want to criminalise people for being dicks?

When she says she has not seen a sign he is a bad person!!!
This is kind of a sign you daft cow

She appears to believe he has been wrongly convicted. It's not hard to understand. Jails are full of people whose mammies and sisters and girlfriends don't think they did it.

Take a read here: What makes a woman stick by her rapist husband? www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/10821809/What-makes-a-woman-stick-by-her-rapist-husband.html

That is one perspective, but of course we don't know the details of their relationship.

There are many other possibilities ranging from her thinking that rape is not that serious; perhaps she is some sort of psychopath totally lacking in empathy; etc.

HestiaParthenos · 16/12/2018 18:14

I'm also a bit hmm at the fact they felt the need to tell us she owns her own car and home

Perhaps they wanted to make sure no one thinks she's a victim who can't get away from the rapist?

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that he rapes her, too. Not an excuse, but an explanation.
If she admitted he's a rapist, she might have to admit to herself that she's a rape victim.

Are there any studies on how many rapists who rape strangers also rape their intimate partners? I suppose they would be difficult to do, but the result would be interesting. (Of course you'd have to ask for "forced sex" or something the like, if you say "rape" people just deny.)

However I do still think rape should carry a life sentence.*

It does.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/12/2018 19:05

Not to be rude or abrupt, but since when has 9 years been life.
Am I missing something, here.
