I hate 111

Another frustrating experience with 111. My daughter has been prescribed strong drugs for a stomach problem and the GP said to call if any problems. It's a Saturday and sadly I had to call 111 out of hours service as she had dreadful, new, 10/10 on the pain scale stomach cramps after taking the medication, strong enough to make her cry, which subsided after 20 minutes (and might be side effect of the drug). I wanted to know whether this is normal and whether we should continue with the medication.

I told the girl reading off a computer screen what the problem was and the names of the drugs and then had to go through twenty minutes of questions - is she pregnant. Has she had a miscarriage (she's 11). I was told I'd get a call back that evening (it was already 11.50 pm so there was no evening left). When I asked if it would be sometimes within the next five hours she said yes. By 8 am still no call back I called back again and was told that they were another area of 111 so had no record and no way to access my previous call as that must have been picked up by a different area (this it turned out was a 111 not covering my area - but when I suggested just calling the 111 unit that did cover my area she said 'we don't have the ability to do that'). She had to close my case and reopen a new one 8 and a half hours after I'd called up the first time. I then had to answer all the same moronic questions again and the woman didn't even take down the name of the drugs my child had taken (until I insisted).
She said I'd get a call back sometime in the next five hours which would be 16 hours after my original call.

Surely there is something wrong with this? Can't we start some kind of campaign for reform of the f'ing system. this is not the first time they've been rubbish. normally they pack you off to a and e for a headache.
Does anyone else have terrible 111 stories to share. or a way of making proper effective noise about the rubbishness that is this service.

Sounds like a very frustrating situation but I strongly suspect your own attitude has caused some of your difficulties.

Submit a complaint in writing to the service, that's generally more productive than instigating a thread to trash them.

Sweetpotatoaddict · 16/12/2018 09:05

what outcome did you hope to have from calling 111? A pharmacy might be your best port of call this morning for advice regarding the meds.

italiancortado · 16/12/2018 09:08

First off your daughters pain had subsided, otherwise it's safe to assume you would have called back much sooner. You say yourself you just want to know if it's normal and if you should continue with the meds, rather than your DD needs medical attention. There has obviously been an error in the admin somewhere, but it is about prioritising, and while they have made a mistake, a long wait for something like that wouldn't be unusual.

PurpleDaisies · 16/12/2018 09:09

11 year olds unfortunately can get pregnant. It’s a valid question to ask.

MamaLovesMango · 16/12/2018 09:14

What would you suggest?

The questions you’re referring to sadly, are valid, even to an 11 year old. That’s why they say ‘the questions might seem odd/not appropriate/not relevant’ before they start asking.

Going forward, do you have a 24 hour pharmacy near you? They can answer all of your questions, so if you do it might be worth keeping them in mind for the future.

Santasshoe · 16/12/2018 09:16

Not sure about the rest but I worked for 111 for a while and they have to ask if children over 10 are pregnant as it sadly can be a possibility for some.

Sirzy · 16/12/2018 09:18

I can get why it wasn’t a priority for 111.

As others have said this is where a call to the local pharmacy is probably your best starting point

Zevitevitchofcwsmas · 16/12/2018 09:19

Op I couldn't agree more! My dd had strep throat b and we went through 20 questions, had the doc call back, finally saw out of hour doc... Got anti biotic and diagnosis. Took her home have the the ab. And she puked them up.

Had to hack to 111 and go though all the questions again! Inspite of literally 2 hours before seeing doc and get diagnosis. I explained we just needed different ab it was 11pm by this point.

Waste of time. You should be able to skip that part for some situations!

Sooveritg · 16/12/2018 09:25

I called them about two years ago, and they said they were sending an ambulance. 4 hours later we called them again. And yes the moronic questions. As it turned out I almost died.
On the other hand, I've had an ambulance here within 10 fucking minutes for an allergic reaction where I just had a rash.
Just don't ring them. I don't anymore. If it's the weekend, and I think it's warranted I call 999, otherwise, it's get a referral from GP (if you can get an appointment) and go to A&E yourself.
They're not an advice service. I think people ring (like I used to do) asking for advice only to find a fucking ambulance at my door.
It's a crazy waste of resources.

NotAllIndividuals · 16/12/2018 09:25

I've called them a few times re LO who is 11 months. They ask the most ridiculous questions that are not relevant to a baby, I can't remember now but I just roll my eyes and give my best ' no, no, no, let's hurry this along shall we' voice. But I do agree, I've had terrible service from them on multiple occasions, I think it's a stupid service. I'd love to know how they measure their success. I think that you're either sick enough to go to a&e or you're not. The scripted questions haven't helped me make an informed decision. But maybe someone else has been saved, so I can't judge by my own experience. After multiple frustrations with them I won't be using them again though. A&E, pharmacy, doctors depending on the issue.

Heartofglass21 · 16/12/2018 09:27

As far as I know, when you reaccess the service, they have to establish whether the situation has changed or if the original symptoms have worsened, hence the need to ask the questions again.

But hey, carry on rubbishing the service if it makes you feel better.

And pregnant 11 year olds, sadly, do exist.

loosenknot · 16/12/2018 09:32

you're right. my tone is wrong.

She was doubled over with pain when I called (or five minutes before I called) and the potential side effects of these particular drugs are quite hardcore. I was going to take her to A and E. I was quite scared. I don't think eight and a half hours is reasonable for no call back, given the distress and pain she was in and the need for her to take the drugs (they are a strong course combination of three types of drugs and the GP had warned she might have problems and to notify them if there were problems.). I don't think a pharmacist would have been appropriate .

Anyway, just now, half an hour from my second call, I got a doctor call back and he was excellent and told me to stop giving her one of the drugs that was probably causing the pain for today, and that if the problem continued today to call back and they'd give her an emergency appointment. Couldn't ask for more.

Your OP said the pain was gone after 20 minutes.

italiancortado · 16/12/2018 09:35

You should be able to skip that part for some situations!

Have you any idea how ridiculous that would be!

Zevitevitchofcwsmas · 16/12/2018 09:41

The doctors when I got back through 1oo% agreed with me.

If the doctor who had seen us, diagnosed by dd and just needed to give different ab agrees with me, I can't see how that's ridiculous. She was astonished actually seeing as I had already made it through the 111 gauntlet why I couldn't call them back directly!

italiancortado · 16/12/2018 09:42

The doctor was astonished? It's hardly unusual.

ethelfleda · 16/12/2018 09:49

I have no bad stories about 111. I personally think it’s a great service - especially with it being so hard to get doctor’s appointments at our surgery.
Yes they ask a lot of questions... but seeing as they aren’t gps with your medical history it’s understandable really!!
I’ve called a couple of times for my son when he was around 10 months and again around 12 months - both times saved an unnecessary doctors appointment or AE visit... I think it’s a great service so people don’t clog up the system when they don’t need to...

Santasshoe · 16/12/2018 09:51

The people on the phones aren't medically trained so it would be dangerous for them not to ask everything. They also get alot of older people saying they have intergestion or the like when they have all the signs of a heart attack.

ethelfleda · 16/12/2018 09:51

think that you're either sick enough to go to a&e or you're not

Yeah... YOU think that... many people wouldn’t have a clue and would be stupid enough to wander into AE with something minor that they just needed medical advice for!!

ImNotAFlower · 16/12/2018 09:54

Did the Dr you saw initially say "you need to see a dr if it gets any worse?"

If that is the case ring back and state FIRMLY that the GP said you must ring to speak to a out of hours GP. That should trigger a particular course of action and get a 1hr call back.

And feel for them having to ask if she is pregnant at 11 it is one of the most awkward questions in the system to ask but I have had a 12 year old tell me she was pregnant so it is there for a reason.

I hope your daughter is feeling better soon.

HammerHorror · 16/12/2018 09:55

Does anyone else have terrible 111 stories to share.

You really think this is productive or proactive?

The service is fallible because every service is fallible. However, it's an excellent resource that saves thousands of wasted A&E appointments. The ridiculous questions have to be asked to ensure any 999 cases are triaged immediately and not after 7 minutes of someone blabbering on about irrelevant symptoms and then "... oh and by the way he's been bleeding for 2 hours non-stop"... because people are also fallible!

I don't know what people expect. A personalised service? Is the population really that egocentric that you expect your call is #1 in the operators mind or that your call must trump all others!

It's bloody frustrating... we sat in A&E for 5 hours with our 1year old with pneumonia last week ... it's deeply irritating and tiring ... but they weren't making us wait because they were being arseholes. She'd been triaged and was stable. They were busy dealing with other people who weren't as lucky.

FFS go and live in a country where you have to pay upfront before they'll remove your perforated appendix!!!! Angry

ImNotAFlower · 16/12/2018 09:55

Sorry I just saw your update. Sounds like the second call was put through properly

TheBigFatMermaid · 16/12/2018 09:58

I called them because my neighbour had had a TIA, the ambulance was there before we had finished the call. They were fab!

Every time I have used them, they have been great. Probably not what you want to hear, but maybe we are just lucky in our area.

ethelfleda · 16/12/2018 10:01

Hammer I couldn’t agree more!
And I hope your little is getting better Flowers

Bigonesmallone3 · 16/12/2018 10:03

I think 111 are brilliant, they have served us well on a few occasions and friends alike, it's service we r very lucky to have, the questions r there for a reason and though some may be pointless a lot aren't.
I believe if they believe ur daughter was in danger and needed to see someone they would have sent someone.
The fact that u didn't phone 999 in the first place makes everyone aware it was not an emergency..
