KathrynOfArrogance · 15/12/2018 13:00

And I really want to go and help the animals but I know they wouldn't let me anyway!
People are important too but the poor animals must be so so stressed!
AIBU to want them to escape :(

Sorry to say but they just said on the radio 4 news that a number of birds, reptiles and amphibians died.

Vampiratequeen · 16/12/2018 19:18

Unfortunately they lost some birds, some frogs, fish and insects.

ToftyAC · 16/12/2018 19:22

I live not too far away from the zoo and was heartbroken to hear the news, as it’s a great display with the Orangutans et al. All the mammals were saved but some of the frogs, insects, birds, etc didn’t make it sadly. I think they’ve set up a gofundme page as many wanted to offer financial help to get the animals rehomed for now.

sevensatsumas · 16/12/2018 19:27

'It is not my picture. I saw it on Twitter. ' Hmm

Clearly you have never actually visited Chester Zoo, as if you had you would know that the picture that you 'found on twitter' is not an accurate representation. You just look a bit daft posting that really.

KathrynOfArrogance · 16/12/2018 19:29

@brizzledrizzle fo'shizzle, thanks!!

@Hushabyelullaby ahh sweet, bevans?
Isn't it good to have such an amazing zoo on our doorstep!

Small mided pigeons clearly have no clue about the zoos history and how it keeps animals alive happy and free from extinction

Another one from the plane who lives on a hill Smile
Just wondering if trump is the person who also retweeted this and blocked me for my comments Grin
A fabulous Zoo. So sad for them at the loss
Of animals. I am a member and was there on Thursday for the fantastic lantern parade.

Hushabyelullaby · 16/12/2018 20:27

@KathrynOfArrogance yep.

Oh it's so devastating, those poor frogs/insects/birds

KathrynOfArrogance · 16/12/2018 20:51

Glad it's not as bad as it could of been

No, I have not been to Chester Zoo. I believe that zoos are cruel prisons and have no place in a civilized society.

Even if the giraffes were bred here, it will still be too cold for them. A human born in Antarctica won't magically develop a thicker skin. Plus, what do hey do in the depths of winter? I presume the giraffes are in that little barn from the photo I posted.

The photo is from Twitter, but it is a real photo. I am entitled to post any accurate photo I wish, as are others. I don't see why the origins of the photo I posted are being questioned, yet the others aren't? We should have a balanced view of the situation, I think.

Anyway, I can see that a lot of people here are calling me names. That tells me hat u have no other argument. You know I'm right. You know that this Zoo is a glorified prison.

OftenHangry · 16/12/2018 21:46

@trumptrump you are right. As a modern society we shouldn't give a damn about this and we should just let species go extinct. 🙄
Is that what you wanted to hear?

There are hundreds of species which wouldn't be here without amazing ZOOs like Chester nad the unbelievable effort the staff puts into keeping them safe and comfortable so they breed. Mnay spieces will not bread in bad conditions so that tells you these guys and many others are doing something right.

However, there are some really shitty ZOOs and they should be shut unless they improve.

OnTrain · 16/12/2018 21:46

Erm, we’ve given you the other argument and you’ve totally ignored it Confused You’re being selective and very very narrow minded. Get an education

TeenTimesTwo · 16/12/2018 21:48

trump
What about the education and conservation that zoos do?
How will animals that are critically endangered in the wild survive without the fundraising and education and breeding that they do?

What if there were a natural disaster on e.g. Madagascar?

You really do need to see a modern zoo such as Chester or Jersey and see the work they do before criticising them.

Pieceofpurplesky · 16/12/2018 21:49

Actually Trump as you have never been you cannot comment on it at all. I am a member and conservationist so I know what the zoo is. I also know this is a highly manipulative image. There are three pens that the giraffes are put in when they need to be - 90% of the time these doors are open and the giraffes are able to walk in and out. They have access to a huge paddock (without Walls) to run around in.
Please do not tell people who have actually been somewhere that we 'know this zoo is a glorified prison' as you are totally wrong.

MrsJayy · 16/12/2018 22:08

The bedroom is huge that is only part of it inyour nicked off twitter photo it is not an accurate picture, fine dislike zoos if you wish but stop being so dramatic as to go on about prisons and civillised society you are coming across as a bit foolish, btw trump what are you doing for giraffe conservation.

woodwaj · 16/12/2018 22:08

If it was too cold for them, they would be ill and/or die. But they don't. They have a very successful breeding programme. I completely agree with @pieceofpurplesky that the photo you have chosen has been manipulated having been in plenty of times myself I can assure you it isn't like that. They've just zoomed in on the closest animal to them!

crazycatgal · 16/12/2018 22:10

@trumptrump It's a real photo... of some of the inside bit and doesn't show the huge enclosure. They aren't kept inside during winter either.

Why don't you go and visit before you spout a load of nonsense and make yourself look like an idiot.

IShitChristmasGlitter · 16/12/2018 22:35

yes heres the prison trump.

Chester zoo is on fire

OneStepMoreFun · 16/12/2018 22:42

Chester Zoo is so not a prison. I did a day's keeper experience there and left thinking it was more like an animal 5* hotel. The keepers are absolutely devoted to the animals. The indoor areas are kept perfectly clean. The food is varied and some of it is hidden in various places that keep the animals physically and mentally agile as they have to hunt for it. The keepers keep a respectful distance from animals that wouldn't want human interaction. They discuss their health and livelihood in daily meetings. It couldn't be better run.

Serin · 17/12/2018 00:14

I have mixed feelings about Chester Zoo, I live close by, was a member for many years when the kids were small. But it is cramped and often the animals do look so sad.
I read somewhere that the whole of Chester Zoo is smaller than the Rhino enclosure at Knowsley safari park just up the road. The rhinos at Chester are in a very small paddock.
Knowsley 200hectares
Chester 125hectares.
I am not criticising Zoos in general, I just wish they would give the animals more space.
And, if I was a rhino or a lion/tiger and I had the choice between Knowsley and Chester, I know where I would rather live!

Serin · 17/12/2018 00:16

sorry I got that wrong!
Knowsley 200hectares
Chester 45 hectares

DaysOfCurlySpencer · 17/12/2018 00:42

If I was a rhino, lion or tiger I would rather be somewhere when I wouldn't get shot for Chinese medicine or a trophy.

AlbaChick · 17/12/2018 00:59

I’m totally against the NEED to have zoos in this day and age. These excellent, well managed places help keep endangered species alive. They offer education about conservation and the plight of these animals that most of the public would otherwise not be aware. Work done here at Australia zoo has done so much to help conserve the wildlife we gave. It also gets the youngsters interested and engaged from an early age, vital for future conservation. What is needed is either shutting down or closing those sub standard zoos and removing the causes of many animals being either extinct or dangerously close to it. Poaching and eradication of wildlife habitat is just part of the problem. I think Sir Richard Attenborough got it right when he gave his thoughts on what was the biggest threat to the world and its wildlife. Excellent work by the zoo staff, fire services and everyone else involved. The losses would have been much greater without all their efforts.

KathrynOfArrogance · 17/12/2018 09:44

I'm sure the giraffes were even happier this summer due to extreme heat
I was pregnant all through it so couldn't be out in it as much as I liked!
But we went once when I was 7 months gone and once when baby was 10 weeks
Both times were amazing, as always!
We also went to Blackpool zoo which is much smaller but they have worked well with what they have
As long as the animals are safe and cared for that's all that matters

There's just been a new article about the rescue of the animals

Chester Zoo keepers rescued animals from Saturday's fire by waving bananas at them, it has emerged.

Classic! Love it!

Have you seen the current just giving sum?
124k! That's amazing. It will go towards conservation work
