This cooker situation

BanginChoons · 14/12/2018 17:11

When i was away for the weekend, a family member stayed at my house and a necessary appliance broke.
Said family member, instead of contacting me and letting me know, purchased a replacement for me, from a second hand shop. Unfortunately, the replacement is not suitable.

I am expected to repay the family member the money spent, but now I am left in a situation where I need to buy a new one, sell the one they bought (No one is interested in buying it yet for the price they paid), and repay the money.

Aibu for being annoyed about this situation? Or should just I be grateful for their "help"?

What broke, and what did they buy instead?

BanginChoons · 14/12/2018 17:12

The cooker. They bought a much smaller one.

How did they organise it over a weekend? Presumably it functions as a cooker, but not the size/spec you choose. Is it too much value to donate?

RoboticMary · 14/12/2018 17:15

I wouldn’t pay for it. They should have been honest, and paid for a proper replacement. None of this was your doing, so they can have the trouble of selling it on if they like. But they wouldn’t get a penny out of me!

DrWashout · 14/12/2018 17:15

I'm going to take a punt that the necessary appliance is a cooker.

Your relative either buys you a replacement and pays themselves, or you buy the replacement you want. Madness for them to choose it and expect you to pay. Is this one of your parents?

Star81 · 14/12/2018 17:16

Difficult one as I’m sure the family member thought they were being helpful but really should have contacted you and asked what to do for the best. I wouldn’t be happy in your situation at all and I don’t think YABU

Alfie190 · 14/12/2018 17:34

Why on earth did they think it was sensible to select and buy a cooker for someone else?

I would not pay them for the cooler, I would either offer it to them for them to sell or day you will try to sell and will give them the proceeds.

Alfie190 · 14/12/2018 17:44

*cooker

Oldraver · 14/12/2018 17:46

They need to arrange to send the cooker back...and you should not pay for it.

BanginChoons · 15/12/2018 13:51

Yeah it's a cooker. I've phoned the shop and they won't take it back.

OP posts:
Hyppolyta · 15/12/2018 13:57

Give them the cooker back.

You didnt ask for it or want it, it isnt a gift if they want repaying.

I think its a massive fucking cheek what theyve done!

BarbedBloom · 15/12/2018 13:59

They need to sort it out and I wouldn’t be paying them for it. Who orders a cooker for someone else without checking sizes/requirements etc?

ISdads · 15/12/2018 13:59

They won't learn if there are no consequences. So do all the 'what a lovely gesture' etc talk, but sadly not suitable, give it them back so they can return it/sell it/chuck it and buy a new one. Their action was quite ridiculous.

BlueUggs · 15/12/2018 14:11

I need more information -

  1. Was your cooker in full working reliable order before they came?
  1. How did they break the oven?
  1. Why did they think you would be happy with a smaller second hand one?
LIZS · 15/12/2018 14:19

A second hand store won't take it back ? Confused

Allthewaves · 15/12/2018 14:20

I wouldn't be paying. I'd sell on the cooker and give them the proceeds

AwdBovril · 15/12/2018 14:26

They should have been upfront with you, & checked before buying. They weren't, their loss. I wouldn't reimburse them, as oven doesn't meet requirements, & I'd request that they deal with the removal of the cooker by X date or it will be re-donated to 2nd hand shop & they will not be able to recover any of their expenditure.

BanginChoons · 15/12/2018 14:30

@blueuggs

  1. It was working but ancient and on its way out. I'd already been browsing for a replacement.
  1. I'm not sure how it broke. I think they just tried to cook something and it wouldn't heat up.
  1. I think they thought they were doing me a favour? So I didn't have to worry about sorting and fitting one.
OP posts:
BanginChoons · 15/12/2018 14:31

LIZS, no. They said they can't refund unless it's faulty.

OP posts:
Disfordarkchocolate · 15/12/2018 14:36

I'd ask them to take the replacement cooker and sell so they can get the money back. They should have just let you know so you could make sure the replacement vwas suitable.

Eliza9917 · 15/12/2018 21:07

Just out of interest, how is it too small? Aren't they a standard size inside anyway?

MilkyCuppa · 15/12/2018 21:10

Give them back the cooker they bought. Job done.

Bluntness100 · 15/12/2018 21:15

So are you saying basically the cooler just gave up the ghost due to age, not something they did, and they tried to do you a favour by getting you a replacement?

It's frustrating, but I'd see good intentions here.

Gardai · 15/12/2018 21:18

Cookers come in two sizes I think - width

Bringbackthestripes · 15/12/2018 21:31

Electric or gas? Because they either need to be electrically connected or gas connected by approved engineers so how was that all sorted in a weekend? If the seller has fitted it without certification to be able to do so you can certainly make them take it back or inform the relevant regulator

Just out of interest, how is it too small? Aren't they a standard size inside anyway? no, slimline 50 or standard 60 cm
