Aibu to be completely over hard floors?

The last house and the current one (we rent) are completely wooden/laminate/tiled downstairs.

Bloody things are cold, are lovely when freshly cleaned but show up every speck, crumb and dust/hair ball leading to constant bloody sweeping/mopping and make a racket every time something’s dropped.

I’m not houseproud and appreciate a carpet that doesn’t insistently show you how dusty the room is and politely waits to be vacuumed. Doesn’t help we’ve got those wooden shutter blinds that require constant bloody dusting too. I like nice curtains and voiles that can be bunged in the washer every now and then and make the room smell lovely whilst they hang there drying.

Viva la revolution!

I've never understood the fervour for wood/laminate floors, to be honest.

Cornettoninja · 14/12/2018 15:14

I’ve decided they’re only for people who enjoy cleaning or have a cleaner. And enjoy freezing cold feet.

I’ve two cats as well as a toddler and to be honest a rubber broom works wonders on the fur on the carpet and my ever shedding hair .

The way I look at it is that all those dust balls and crumbs would just be sitting in the carpet being manky if they weren't showing up on the wooden floor. I'd rather see them and get rid of them. But if you don't feel that way then get some big rugs?

Cornettoninja · 14/12/2018 15:22

I’ve decided I’d rather be manky than being constantly irritated into cleaning by tiny amounts of crud Grin what you don’t know can’t hurt you and all that.

I’ve already got big rugs - it’s not enough to quell the beast!

YANBU. I love a fitted carpet - so much cosier, warmer and more luxurious than a cold hard floor. Bring back the shag pile!

StylishMummy · 14/12/2018 16:03

YABU- hard floors are hard wearing - especially in a BTL property

Theoryofmould · 14/12/2018 16:06

We had the whole house refitted with carpet last year. Moved in and it was laminate so that was removed. The only places that aren't carpet are kitchen/utility and bathrooms. You just can't beat good quality underlay and cosy carpet Grin

Oddsocksandmeatballs · 14/12/2018 16:08

I have wooden floors downstairs and much prefer them to carpets. I find carpets look mucky far quicker than the floorboards do when my dogs come to stay as I find it easier to clean muddy paw prints and shed fur from the wooden floors than it is from the carpet. Mind you, the carpets are pale and the floorboards are proper old, dark floorboards and not modern laminate crap.

Waddsup12 · 14/12/2018 16:10

Yep, I have parquet and have loose laid carpet over it now. Looks fantastic but I kept dropping things and it was getting scratched.

Cornettoninja · 14/12/2018 16:10

Hmmm I suppose that’s an argument but they’re not infallible. Our current house has one massive cracked tile in the middle of the kitchen (where I would want hard floor anyway to be fair) and the lovely wooden/laminate (I’m not sure which) has chips and scratches all over. None of this damage is from us I hasten to add.

Floors are always going to take a beating.

Fitted carpets are disgusting. Impossible to really clean.

Geekster1963 · 14/12/2018 16:18

Yes I much prefer carpets. The vinyl kitchen and bathroom floors at our old rented house were awful and looked constantly dirty even when I’d just cleaned them, they were also slippy.

We moved house and it’s Lino ‘wood’ effect and they are great so easy to clean and don’t look mucky and not slippy I don’t like wooden floors.

Unicornandbows · 14/12/2018 16:21

Just got rid of the carpet my dogs hair used to show up and it looked horrible.

Almostfifty · 14/12/2018 16:24

I have wooden and tiled floors everywhere apart from the bedrooms. I find them really easy to clean.

It would be a boring world if we all had the same, wouldn't it.

OkMaybeNot · 14/12/2018 16:24

Completely agree. The trend of hard white tiles is returning and I'm happily ignoring it with my untrendy carpeted house (apart from the kitchen and bathroom).

Hardwood flooring looks beautiful, but I prefer function over form and nothing is warmer and cosier than carpet in the winter months.

gendercritter · 14/12/2018 16:25

But all that dirt is just burying into the carpet and getting stuck. I dream of owning a house where the whole floor is just beautiful floorboards. Sorry Grin

OkMaybeNot · 14/12/2018 16:27

I should add though that their upkeep is a pita. A good powerful carpet cleaner is necessary if you don't want minging floors.

90mammasophie · 14/12/2018 16:27

I'm with you on this. Our whole downstairs is hard wood flooring. The kitchen and conservatory are tiled and my feet are freezing even in slippers. I vacuum every other day and mop twice per week. Hate it. Upstairs is fully carpeted and because of that, I often sit upstairs in the day / evenings. Get DC to play upstairs. That way we are warmer.

JudasPrudy · 14/12/2018 16:30

The only thing about carpet is it can get smelly if you have pets and children running around on it.

squeakywheelie · 14/12/2018 16:31

I have carpet in the sitting room and I hate it. We have a big and heavy sofa that I can't move to clean under. The nozzle on the hoover does a rubbish job. If I had laminate I could get the broom under it. Also I like to wash the laminate every other day. You can't do that with carpet. I think the guidance is every six months and it takes ages to dry. Carpet is so unhygienic. I like carpet in bedrooms but not downstairs.

Aquamarine1029 · 14/12/2018 16:32

I find carpeting disgusting. Packed with dirt and grime that is impossible to ever fully clean.

IamSusan · 14/12/2018 16:32

YANBU it's your home, your choice

I love my wooden floors, cost me a fortune to restore them all through the house (bare the kitchen and bathrooms). I hate carpets with passion, and it's the first thing to goes as soon as we move anywhere.

Tiles are cold, but wooden floor are not, and I have rugs too. They don't look especially dirty, even with the dogs. They are so much easier and quicker to maintain frankly, if anything drops on the floor it's wiped clean in 10 seconds. A glass of red wine on carpet is a drama, dropped make-up or kids pain even worst.

I haven't got time for carpets!

junebirthdaygirl · 14/12/2018 16:36

We have underfloor heating so wood feels warm in bare feet. I couldn't go back to carpets although our wooden floor are looking a bit the worse for wear.

Each to their own but Ive just got rid of the last bit of carpet from diwnstairs and am delighted with my tile (not white) and wooden floors. Carpets are for bedrooms, or perhaps for people with less messy families and more continent pets.
