Aibu to be completely over hard floors?

The last house and the current one (we rent) are completely wooden/laminate/tiled downstairs.

Bloody things are cold, are lovely when freshly cleaned but show up every speck, crumb and dust/hair ball leading to constant bloody sweeping/mopping and make a racket every time something’s dropped.

I’m not houseproud and appreciate a carpet that doesn’t insistently show you how dusty the room is and politely waits to be vacuumed. Doesn’t help we’ve got those wooden shutter blinds that require constant bloody dusting too. I like nice curtains and voiles that can be bunged in the washer every now and then and make the room smell lovely whilst they hang there drying.

Viva la revolution!

I miss carpets! I never sit on the floor anymore because it is tiled and freezing cold!
Underfloor heating and hard floors would be a game changer though...

Ninoo25 · 15/12/2018 13:35

Underfloor heating sounds great, but what do you do if there’s a problem with it? Do you have to rip up all the floors? Do you only have it on the ground floor? Does it run off a boiler or is itelectric? Sorry for all the questions, just genuinely curious

LaurieMarlow · 15/12/2018 13:44

YANBU. We have carpet upstairs and it is lovely and cosy. We hoover regularly and I can't get too worked up about the dirt I can't see Grin

We have wooden boards downstairs and while I like it, it's blonde wood and it shows up every, single spec. I'm always sweeping, drives me mental.

I hate laminate with a passion.

imamearcat · 15/12/2018 13:44

I find carpets too stressful with dogs and kids! We have underfloor heating. Lovely and cosy. x

LaurieMarlow · 15/12/2018 13:45

Also agree that carpet is perfect for babies learning to crawl.

abacucat · 15/12/2018 13:46

ninoo Yep it is a nightmare when it goes wrong.

billysboy · 15/12/2018 15:57

I have a wet underfloor heating system ( water from boiler ) it is under the wooden floor comes off the boiler into a manifold and then into a continuous coil laid over the existing floor and then covered with engineered wood floor

The water is at half the temp of traditional radiators so is economic to run and maintains a background temp when not on and works off an individual programmer and timer for each room

Love it and my wood floors

BertieBotts · 15/12/2018 16:21

I don't need my home to be maximum hygiene focused, I don't live in a hospital. I can't get worked up about a bit of dirt on a carpet.

starcrossedseahorse · 15/12/2018 16:23

You would be if you had several nutty gundogs with muddy paws charging around!

Allthewaves · 15/12/2018 16:31

Love my laminate. Entire downstairs done.
Don't find it cold, much easier than than carpet - quick swiffer around everyday and nearly everything wipes off. Laminate in sitting room is over 15 years and still.going strong

Toddlerteaplease · 15/12/2018 16:33

YANBU, my rented house has laminate floor downstairs. I hate it. I don't mind it in the hall but hate it in the lounge!

Auntiepatricia · 15/12/2018 16:35

I went into a bathroom in an old old house recently and it was fully carpeted😱😱😱

But oh my word it was COSY!

BertieBotts · 15/12/2018 16:56

Oh well yes possibly :o but I don't have dogs.

FishFingersAndCustard11 · 15/12/2018 17:01

I've always loved a nice and fluffy carpet. My current landlord is an arsehole and has the cheapest of cheap carpets put down that feels like sandpaper. He won't let us pay to get new carpets, he 'likes' the ones already down (he's an arsehole for other things too).
This kind of weather would be perfect for the extra fluffy carpets but they are high maintenance and much harder to clean if there's a spillage.

I have a toddler who constantly messes our current carpet with food and drink. She learnt how to take of her nappy and done a shit on the floor in sly the other week. I wish i had floorboards for the easy cleaning.

Auntiepatricia · 15/12/2018 17:04

I hear ya Fishfingers!

MrsStrowman · 15/12/2018 17:46

We restored the original floor boards in our house and I love it, we have big rugs in the hall, living room and morning room, dining room is just the wood. It's easy to keep clean and I just like the look. DB and SIL have light coloured carpets throughout other than kitchen and bathrooms and trying to keep that clean would drive me nuts. Our kitchen is an extension, that you so down into and the floor does get cold, when we replace the kitchen next year we are getting under floor heating, which we already have in the bathroom. It makes all the difference under tiles

Dongdingdong · 16/12/2018 11:02

Tiles and wooden floors all the way for me. Laminate is awful stuff and carpets just absorb all the hair and dust and are never truly clean. Also, if I spill a glass of red over my wooden floor then it’s no issue at all - I can simply wipe it off. It must be awful pressure worrying about spills when you have a carpet.

DurhamDurham · 16/12/2018 11:06

I really like our dark wooden floors. Except for today when my husband has just walked through with his slushy, muddy boots on, about half an hour before 17 members of family are due to arrive.
He says I over reacted Hmm

Howtodeal · 16/12/2018 11:08

We have carpet in the lounge in our new house for the first time in about 20 years and I bloody love it. Room is so much snugger

yoyo1234 · 16/12/2018 11:10

We have tiles/wood/stone throughout. Very cold . At this time of year I always want to carpet at least the upstairs ( to make getting out of bed easier). Then panic at the cost.

Knittink · 16/12/2018 11:11

YABU. At least when hard floors look clean they actually are clean. Plus I have a big dog - reason enough to have no carpets. I don't find hard floors cold, but then I don't walk around barefoot.

yoyo1234 · 16/12/2018 11:12

Durham Durham would it not be worse if it was carpets. At least hard floors are often easier to clean .

DurhamDurham · 16/12/2018 21:17

Yoyo I think if we had carpet he would take his shoes off at the door. He was just being all cavalier because they were wooden and wipe clean Grin
Family gone and clearing up complete, time for bed I think.

Oysterbabe · 16/12/2018 21:31

I don't find the cleaning of the wood floors too bad really. A quick sweep then hoover up the bits with the handheld hoover. It takes about a minute a couple of times a day to keep it looking clean. Run the mop round from time to time. I wear slippers so don't suffer from cold feet.

emmagreen481 · 16/12/2018 21:47

Personally think hard floors look nicer and cleaner than carpet
