To not buy my 2.5 year old the only Xmas present he wants

We have finally deciphered that "those things that you go crash" are cymbals - FML
This is the only thing he has stated that he wants.
AIBU to think that I will be buying them over my dead cold body.....

I was listening to Desert Island Discs earlier. Gary Barlow asked for an electronic keyboard/synth when he was very young and his Dad worked overtime for six months to get the money together. That paid off!

A young relative of mine is a professional drummer. His parents had some tricky conversations with neighbours when he started learning to play and had a full-size kit in their terraced house. Again, though, it paid off.

Final example: Elton John in the current John Lewis Christmas advert. Given a piano as a tiny child, look at him now.

I'm sure your 2.5yo will join this august company if given his cymbals! Grin

This encouragement given after a quick review of all our near neighbours to confirm we have no 2.5yos anywhere near us at present

RedSkyLastNight · 14/12/2018 15:53

But surely buying them is win/win situation?

Either - he will get bored with them very quickly and you won't have to listen to them for long

Or- he will love them to the point he can't put them down, in which case you are saved from the job of entertaining him/finding something else to do. And they don't need much tidying!

kateandme · 14/12/2018 15:54

oh they will be fine.it wont last long.get him other bits too.and then jut set rules.dont be mean of course but this would be a good lesson of knowing when and when not to(he might ignore of course being his age) use these things.ask him one day to wake daddy up with them :)
I think you could have a laugh as a family with them.kids make noise.let them before they get lost in the silence of their rooms.

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 14/12/2018 16:01

My DS has every single musical instrument going .... My dad bought him a box full for his 2nd birthday ( cheers dad!) He's now 4 and still totally obsessed. He loves playing band so much we've added to his collection. We just limit 'noisy' band to a short amount of time and the rest of the time he's only allowed to play 'quiet' band ( no drums or cymbals!!)

I think I've got a musician on my hands.

CheshireChat · 14/12/2018 16:08

I say get them as well, b toys had a nice mixed set and I'm pretty sure DS had the wooden ones from Lidl.

My mum did buy him a whistle (she's abroad and thought she'd be safe) but DS deliberately digs it out when I'm talking to her on the phone Xmas Grin. Serves her right Xmas Wink.

TakeAChanseyOnMe · 14/12/2018 16:22

@Bittermints I also have a relative who is a professional drummer/percussionist. Thankfully he grew up in the country so his drum kit was put in a shed in the corner furthest from anything!

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 14/12/2018 16:23

DontDribble When kids learn bagpipes they start off with a chantry, much easier to blow and less loud. Then once they have mastered the technique and got old enough, they move on to bagpipes

I know this, but no 5 year old child ever asks for a chanter (and I had a fair idea that he wouldn't be able to make much noise anyway). As it happens, the same child is considering a set of pipes now, but I've told him that this time he needs to find a glen to practise in because they really aren't an indoor instrument and I've already suffered for 10 years with the chanter. Either you love bagpipes or you don't. I don't.

abacucat · 14/12/2018 16:25

Sorry you know about it, and unlike me know how to spell it.

Jaxhog · 14/12/2018 16:28

If you have neigbours - please don't. My neighbour bought their son a drum kit, which I had to listen to for 2 miserable years.

5foot5 · 14/12/2018 16:32

Ah go on! Bless him.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/12/2018 16:32

We have a drum kit (electronic) that could be going free to a good home .... just sayin’.

Fishandthechips · 14/12/2018 16:33

I was all ready to say you were being unreasonable but god no. I dont want to imagine the horror that is a 2 year old with cymbals. Also your poor next door neighbours if you have any.
Mind you I have seen packs of plastic musical instruments. I think they included platic cymbals. It may have been Peppa Pig branded. May be quieter.

CheshireChat · 14/12/2018 16:33

Jaxhog on one hand, I agree with you. On the other hand, kids from lower income families should be allowed to learn an instrument as well.

TheVanguardSix · 14/12/2018 16:36

Wrap up two saucepan lids! That’ll do. Grin

TheVanguardSix · 14/12/2018 16:40

Don’t get him cymbals! That’s just silly! Get him a musical triangle instead. He’ll enjoy that so much. That and a xylophone (Fisher Price/Little Tikes do good ones).

AlpacaLypse · 14/12/2018 16:41

Cymbals are going to be noisy whatever. I'd get them but accidentally lose one as soon as possible...

We had a drum-kit here for a few years, but thankfully it was electric and could be practised on with headphones! Only when all four of the members were around after school for band practice did it ring out loud and clear, and we checked with neighbours about timings.

mrcharlie · 14/12/2018 16:48

Wow, Childhood is a blink of an eye,
Just buy them and suffer. We did!!

It was either pan lids or cymbals....pan lids are back safely in the pan drawer!!

MulticolourMophead · 14/12/2018 17:51

You're never too old to want to play music. I'm getting a drum kit in the new year, have a space set up in my room already and I'm 50. Wanted to learn years ago but ex said no.

YeOldeTrout · 14/12/2018 17:54

My 10yr old wants a treadmill. Like a full size £400 job. (sweet naive boy)

Trinpy · 14/12/2018 18:07

Buy it! It's worth it to see how happy they are.

My 2 year old is adamant that he wants chocolate ice cream for christmas, in his stocking when he wakes up on Christmas morning at the crack of dawn. He may be disappointed.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/12/2018 18:14

He could have a note in his stocking from Father Christmas, telling him that his chocolate ice cream is in the freezer, @Trinpy. Wrap it in the same paper as his stocking presents - job done.

Myusernameisunique · 14/12/2018 18:20

My 3 year old DD has aided for nothing but "paw patrol musical instruments". She has got them becaise I'd feel mean of I didn't buy them. I feel your pain OP

NeedAUsernameGenerator · 14/12/2018 18:23
