Lighthearted Post for fun!

Was having a conversation with my teenager yesterday who was talking about his friend who's birthday is 31st December.

He says it's weird as he can never say his birthday would be 'next year' as it would always be 'this year' and on the day itself it would be 'today'.

It has actually blown my mind and I can't stop thinking about it.

Promise I'll start getting out more 🤣

Does anyone have other similar things/stories that they can't get their head around?!

But the "next year I'll be 2 years older" thing works whenever your birthday is. Provided you haven't have a birthday yet this year.

PurpleKittyKnitting · 14/12/2018 16:57

The child's first Christmas comment reminds me when my daughter was at primary school and they did z bit about Chinese New Year.

They said all kids born in 1996 were the year of xx and those born in 1997 are the next year.

I had to tell my daughter that was wrong!

Cheeeeislifenow · 14/12/2018 17:12

Surely his birthday this year is on 31st Dec 2018, and his birthday next year is 31st Dec 2019. No different from anyone else's birthday. He still has one every year like you and me. And when it's his birthday it's "today", well yes but that applies to everyone. I don't get why this is strange or weird.

^^same..utterly confussed....

TedAndLola · 14/12/2018 17:24

How is this different from any other birthday date?

Somebody: "When's your birthday?"
Normal person: "7th of March." or "March."

Who would answer "next year"??

RaspberryRipple1963 · 14/12/2018 17:25

I get what you mean OP,but trying to explain it is very difficult,so not surprised in the slightest that some posters are Xmas Confused.

TedAndLola · 14/12/2018 17:29

I don't think many people are actually confused about the concept, just about why anybody thinks its mind blowing!

TheDropBear · 14/12/2018 17:29

Still on the birthday theme I found this one weird when I first heard it.
If 2 babies are born at exactly the same moment but in different countries they could have different birthdays or even birth years (if it was 31/12 and 1/1) because of the time difference.

MarshaBradyo · 14/12/2018 17:30

People don’t say next year that often

FiveNightsAtMummys · 14/12/2018 17:56

Why couldn't he say my birthday next year? If he said it right now then he would mean his birthday 2019.

I'm confused!! (Doesn't take much)

alibongo5 · 14/12/2018 18:02

Both my friend at school and I had December birthdays and every year in January we took delight in saying, "next year we will be 15 (for instance) when we were only just 13!

Craft1905 · 14/12/2018 18:10

I get where the OP is coming from completely.

If someone asks you "have you had your birthday this year? People will either answer YES (if they've had their birthday since Jan 1) or NO (if their birthday hasn't occurred yet), or IT'S TODAY.

If your birthday is 31 December, you lose the YES option. And if it's 1 Jan, you lose the NO option.

However, I'm not finding it mind blowing, to be honest.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 14/12/2018 18:13

I’ve seen this shared on fb a few times lately

chunkyjumper · 14/12/2018 18:14

Ok so I maybe used the term ‘Mind Blowing’ too hastily!

OP posts:
Madhairday · 14/12/2018 18:15

My birthday is NYE and I've never ever thought of this before Grin

lindyloo57 · 15/12/2018 17:40

he could on the birthday say, next year,

brizzledrizzle · 15/12/2018 17:49

Haha, I never thought of that but he's right. I guess he can still say I'll be X next year though - mine always used to say "I'll be 16 (or whatever) next year even if they were still 14.

TheBigFatMermaid · 15/12/2018 18:04

Never thought of that, but he is right.

How about this to blow your mind.....

Yesterday, today was tomorrow. And tomorrow, today will be yesterday.

Brettgirl · 15/12/2018 18:07

I’m actually quite mind blown as to how I get it but I’m totally confused all in one go!

Thespace · 15/12/2018 18:16

I feel stupid as I actually don’t get it.

I do get that on 30th December he can say I’m 25 now but next year I will be 27. Is that the same thing?!

KatieC0811 · 15/12/2018 18:17

I realised one day that 12am comes before 11am and I haven't been the same since

I'm a nye baby. I'm always instantly an extra year older the day after my birthday.

30 Dec - I'm 28
31 Dec - yay! Birthday! I'm 29
1 Jan - christ, I'm 30 this year

supersop60 · 15/12/2018 18:39

It works in all ways. My DD's birthday is October. So in September 2017(when she was still 16) she could say "I'll be 18 next year"

Retired65 · 15/12/2018 18:39

I am sorry I just don't get this.

TheLittleDogLaughed · 15/12/2018 18:44

KatieC0811 stop. You've ruined my day.
